Clark Kenpo Karate – Robots Root 18 May 2018

I’m stoked on the new M:I trailer. I really want to see mustachio’d Caville wrecking a bathroom. And not in the way I usually wreck it.

This is happening IN THE FUTURE (because I’m in Jakarta) but also in the past (because I’ve been out of network for 2 days):

  • “Journey to Wakanda: a cross between the Jetsons and a 90s JET Magazine” Honest Trailer for Black Panther. Dead on. I just rewatched it on the plane. One thing that was more aggravating the second time around was the rubbery CGI. This BTS video of that aspect of production is really interesting. I just cant shake though how much the rubbery physics took me out of the immersion of those scenes. He never looked real doing his super movements. And frankly, I prefer the look of the practical work. Check this side by side:

  • I’d be so down with a USGrant biopic from Spielberg and DiCaprio. It seems tailor-made for them.
  • Someone, somewhere, greenlit a Pennyworth series, featuring Alfred and Thomas Wayne in the 60s. I mean.
  • Look, I don’t know if these sneaky snaps of S01 style black costume Daredevil are to be flashbacks or a return to the old school I loved so much, but either way, 10:1 that’s Bullseye he’s sparring with.
  • Interesting comments from Simon Pegg, that Tarantino’s ST script won’t be madcap, but more respectful of the franchise. That’s refreshing actually. I’d like it either way, probably, just as I loved Waititi’s good-natured abuse of the MCU. But I’m more interested in seeing what Tarantino would do when trying to play nicely with someone else’s toys, rather than just Warren Ellising the hell out of it, so to speak. Not to be confused with THIS project, also discussed this week…
  • While Agents of SHIELD’s relationship with the MCU has been controversial and one sided at best, I do like what I’m seeing: the final season is being delayed until after Avengers 4 comes out. No accident there…
  • It’s not entirely the first time I’ve read fan theories about The Dark Knight’s Joker having a military background, but FFS it’s Patton Oswalt so of course it’s such a well defined and executed theory I can’t even. I’m in! I also love, tangentially, the idea that some have proposed: that the SS’ Joker is a former Robin. Unrelated really, but there it is.
  • Zombieland 2 with the original cast??? It’s like a fever dream made real.
  • I was thinking on the plane, watching a film with a lot of scenes with little or no dialog (The Hostiles) how much I’d be interested in an action movie with no dialogue. There have been more than a few contemporary films over the years with no script, though I’ve wondered if and how there are screenwriter credits for such projects. Anyway, I was imagining a John Wick with no dialog. Damn. Anyway, they greenlit a Snake Eyes solo film. Maybe thats an opportunity. I mean, there’s no way Paramount would screw this up right?
  • Feige kinda sorta confirmed there’s a plan for Kamala Khan’s teen, Muslim Ms. Marvel in the MCU. Which is a good thing, because if Marvel doesnt use the whole Phase 4 thing to bring a younger, more diverse and interesting view of the marvel world to screen, then they are dumb as rocks. Space rocks.
  • holy crap, Villaneuve’s Dune is actually moving forward. STOKE!
  • This supposed plot-summary for Obi-Wan is yawnerrific. Can’t we just have space Lone Wolf and Cub already?
  • The coolest thing I’ve ever seen, Mayan pop culture monsters specific.
  • How dope is it that Nolan released a restored ‘original’ cut of 2001 complete with grain? I mean, what a project.

Hokay… back to watching the world burn…

Now THATS a Bell – 13 Oct 2016

Image
These guys apparently have the license from Dark Horse to make these wonderful things. LOOK AT THE BELL. WANT THE BELL.

I actually pre-ordered this. I find myself at a point in my life where i have use for a rad bell.

Meanwhile, many things have happened since we went to the Alternative press Expo this past weekend. Here are some of them, for science…

Image
ITEM: Wasp has been confirmed for the next Avengers film after Infinity War. This coincides with the location of the Ant-Man and Wasp film in the production schedule.

ITEM: This deep dive nerd research into the extent of Luke Cage’s invulnerability over the years in the books was pretty cool. I especially, of course, enjoyed watching him damage Iron Man’s chestplate.

ITEM: Lots of Wolverine 3 buzz came out of NYCC. The poster with the long fingers was released late last week, then lots of speculation about who Boyd Holbrook would be playing, if Richard E. Grant has been assumed to be playing some version of Mister Sinister. According to this snap, he’s apparently going to be some (theoretically more interesting film version of) Donald Pierce, a cyborg Hellfire Club dude. Im just looking forward to an old, less resilient Wolvie pushing a senile Professer X around in a wheelchair.

EDIT: You KNOW you always wanted a 12″ Snake-Eyes… in a properly upscaled blister pack, at an unfortunately upscaled price.

Image
EDIT: The John Wick 2 trailer was released, and it looks like John Wick, which is a good thing. The poster, however, is a GREAT thing.

EDIT: The big buzz release for NYCC was the sizzle reel celebrating the primary film production wrap on Justice League. This was actually a pretty strategic attack intended to push how much everyone is having fun. I have no problem with that. Affleck looks really good as Batman leading the League, and I see no mullets. I see more women (maybe Mera) and there’s a GREAT Batman leap that is quite referential to the comics. Overall, what I appreciated most was that it wasn’t spoilery. Second most: Justice League in an elevator.

Best part for me: grinding away on those arm bands. Gal Gadot and grinding… I mean…

EDIT: The news that Sigourney Weaver is going to be in Defenders was AWESOME. She hasn’t formerly been confirmed as the villain, but let’s hope.

Somewhat more polarizing was the new Iron Fist full trailer. I thought it was on model with the tone and look of the other Marvel netflix shows, and I like what I’m seeing so far. For me, it’s all about the sick iron fist FX. When it glows from within, and when he takes the steel door down, I feel like I’m seeing them do comic book style powers justice in live action. It looks good. Still not thrilled about the hair. But I’m trusting. I trust.

ITEM: So, Ellis is relaunching Wildstorm (I think) still within the DCU that absorbed the imprint prior, now called the Wild Storm… I have no feelings about this really, because I’m not thrilled with most of the post-DC-sale changes and vibe for those characters, but I DO like the design work I’m seeing, pushing them largely into street clothes.

ITEM: Finally, here’s a shot of Mera from Justice League.

That’s all for now… APE post-mortem forthcoming, though Kris is still traveling and I’m catching up with work, so it’ll be a spell before we have it ready, both in podcast and write-up form…

420 Fist and other things 22 April 2016

Welp… Danny Rand returning to civilization after his time in Kun Lun is apparently channeling that hacky-sack bro that made you lose your appetite for putting his shoeless feet up at Woodstock’s Pizza in college.

In other news,

So, RDJR is apparently IN, and Michael Keaton may be out, or never quite in…
makes me wonder though… what if… JEFF GOLDBLUM is joining??

The Hasbro collective universe film concept has gathered quite a writer’s room.
Brian K. Vaughan (Lost, Y: The Last Man, too many awesome things to list here), Pulitzer Prize-winning author Michael Chabon (Spider-Man 2, Wonder Boys), and Jeff Pinkner (Lost, The Amazing Spider-Man 2) are probably the most recognizable. Geneva Robertson (one of the writers of the new Tomb Raider) is on board, as are Nicole Riegel (Dogfight) and Lindsey Beer (Kingkiller Chronicle). The group also includes a ton of Marvel Studios and Marvel TV veterans: Nicole Perlman (Captain Marvel), Cheo Coker (Luke Cage showrunner), Joe Robert Cole (Black Panther), and John Francis Daley and Jonathan Goldstein, the pair who wrote the upcoming Spider-Man: Homecoming.

That said, a similar group was collected to kick-start the Transformers franchise…

Apologies for another FB link but apparently these guys do a presentation at MotoGP every year… I thought all that stuff in MI:II was pure physics-defying fiction…

Barbary Coast is a show in development about the nitty-gritty early years of the gold and possibly silver rush, which right out of the gate makes me want to watch it. Kurt Russell and Kate Hudson are attached, which is also pleasing… the hitch? Mel Gibson is writing and directing. I’m torn. I keep wanting to ban him. But then my realist side steps in and notes that MANY people in Hollywood are bigots, ageists, sexists, douches… I dunno.

Surprising precisely no one, Inhumans has been pushed back. Between the additions of Spider-Man: Homecoming and Ant-Man and Wasp, the slate was crowded… add Indiana Jones 5… and the fact that Permutter’s TV division is hanging the entire S03 SHIELD hat on Inhumans… it seems like a wise move, to me.

Finally, points for effort on this one, and also, I will never stop talking about Daredevil… this set of billboards generated battle damage as people hashtagged a particular character. That’s a surreal attempt to get the millenials motivated. Interesting though!
