Red Markers Turning Green – Robots Root 11 October 2018

$15M for Black Widow? Good work, Scarlet Johansson. Along with the news that Brie Larson signed on for seven films, I’m optimistic we’ll be seeing a lot of powerful Marvel women on screen in the next several years.

Meanwhile, in space:

  • James Bond “will never be a woman…” because… REASONS. Le sigh.
  • If nothing else, Ruby Rose’s Batwoman is about as close to comics continuity as we’ve seen in one of these projects.
  • The screenwriter of Kraven insists Spider-Man will be in his film (because, again, how can he not; see Venom) and Morbius continues to lumber along in pre-production… Sony is trying to Phase IV it before having Phase I-III, ha.
  • “ballistic descent” is pretty much how I describe Lung’s riding style…
  • The Secret Six, an evolution of Suicide Squad (briefly Villains United) is headed to TV in some form or another… that does not fill me with optimism… if it were heading to cable, then maybe, but this is CBS…
  • More Glass. I need to get on Split, post-haste. I didn’t watch this trailer…
  • Matthew Mcconoughey has joined Guy Ritchie’s latest gang caper, and thats good news as far as I’m concerned.
  • Disney you done erred.
  • I assumed Janet Van Dyne was coming back TOUCHED… and was surprised they didn’t broadcast more uncertainty about it. Maybe she will be.
  • God Country has been optioned for live action. Stoked! I’ve talked with one of the creative team and it sounds very promising.
  • When I read that there was to be a Fantasy Island remake, the FIRST thing I thought was: those won’t be fantasies… they’ll be nightmares. And sure enough, I think that’s what they are doing. Dave Bautista and Michael Pena are attached. With that cast, I don’t know if it’s going to be a dark comedy or just… dark.
  • Dwayne Johnson is doing League of Extraordinary Gentlemen for Netflix. No, wait… John Henry and the Statesmen. Same difference.
  • The man that killed Neil Blomkamp’s Alien film in his over-reaching declaration that he would somehow make 33 more Aliens films despite being 80+ … is now working in TV too, soooo…..
  • Months from now, we’ll be talking about Knives Out like EVERY DAY. I can feel it.

That’s all for today! If you haven’t yet, download and listen to the latest episode of Robot-Kraken, and if you are willing, please subscribe, rate, and review on iTunes so we can get some exposure thanks to their dubious algorithm…!

Paupers Graves and Saber Waves – 14 Aug 2018

This Mondo poster is by Mark Aspinol. I’m not fond of how the ships are flying off of Kylo Ren’s shoulder, but there’s other compositional choices I really like: for example, the symbolic imagery of the figure placement (Kylo’s back, the fact that they are back to back as per the big scene in Snoke’s throne room) is rad, and it allows the glow of each lightsaber to shine on the opposing character, expressing their instability in the light/dark choice and the concept of balance. I loved the ships in Kylo Ren’s cloak’s negative space. I like that his lightsaber breaks the frame, which I feel expresses his surprise Act 2 choice… Anyway, fun with arts.

From the Shimmer:

  • By the end of S01, Hulu’s Runaways started to follow the beats of the comic, which is exciting. Of course, they haven’t dipped into the big gut-punch of the comic’s first series, but I don’t know yet if they will. That gives it some refreshing urgency. Anyway, S02 synopsis is out, and it looks like it’s diving into the titular on-the-run period we’ve been waiting for.
  • I don’t know what Tax Collector is going to be about (no one does) but I like Ayers overall, and I don’t mind Shia Lebouf the way others generally do. This was an intriguing image for me. I’m into it.
  • The other week I was saying I never really liked the Predator design, and of course there was pity and outrage. Anyway, not like I didn’t watch the movies. I’m a generational dudebro. But anyway, I remember even as a kid wondering how that mouth works. This article is pretty entertaining: no tongue? What the hell? How does it eat, let alone eat sushi
  • New Wes Anderson film is in production! What about? Don’t know, don’t care, take my money.
  • This is the first Venom image I’ve actually liked, in terms of the design. I like that he’s big, and the eyes and grin look better in profile (the eyes want to be farther apart like an animal to me, not straight ahead in the simian manner) and I like that the white sinewy veins are taking the place of the spider symbol. I said this on the podcast though: sometimes Brock’s head is in the head, and other times (like when Riot takes his head off) he’s down in the core of the torso like a mecha pilot. I wonder if this is just sloppiness, or f it’s by design, like he’s being shifted around in an egg sac to protect him. Late night, a couple of cocktails, and I was amused that it was like the same sort of mystery pilot jenga that puts Batman face down when he wants to shoot something in the Tumbler. HA. Meanwhile, Sony shoots itself in every foot it can find: now it is going for a PG-13 rating so they can better ‘integrate’ into the MCU if that ever becomes a possibility. GUH.
  • Ongoing highly speculative theories about what Disney will do in dismantling Fox are ongoing. Mostly about two key points: bringing X-Men and FF into the Marvel fold (let alone all those other properties ready to be strip-mined), and the status of the raunchy R-rated stuff. At least the ‘months of reshoots’ story seems to be hyperbole.
  • Josh Trank’s Fonzo: Al Capone by Tom Hardy who, when faced with perpetual criticism for his weird vocal choices, triple-downed and based Capone on Bugs Bunny with vocal fry. I’m actually into it. I hate his accent and slur as Eddie Brock, but I loved his Bane, loved his Peaky Blinders stuff, and I’m all for this. Capone DID have a weird nasally, highly regional accent. Hardy give precisely zero shits.
  • I don’t think anyone believes Chris Pine and Chris Hemsworth really walked away from ST4… here’s hoping the producers do, so they get their money. I’m not saying any of these actors deserve or necessarily NEED huge salaries that have so outpaced the scale of their work, but I do think the studios are generally stupid about these negotiations. They went to stars of major franchise work and just when you expect the battle will be about them wanting even MORE money (especially Hemsworth)… the studio scales the budget back and asks for pay cuts in violation of their contracts. I get this is how it works, on both sides, fighting to modify contracts… but seriously.
  • On the Robot-Kraken Podcast we talked about how it felt like a missed opportunity to not let Goliath grow in the third act of Ant-Man and Wasp… apparently there was a scene planned… but it was a flashback. I agree, though, that would have been narratively redundant.
  • Shane Black is all for a Nice Guys sequel… I don’t feel it is necessary. It’s a perfect standalone film. But I’d also 100% endorse it if he kept the vibe. Their charisma was electric. I guess neon, given the time period. Lazy incandescent?

Ah Taek Pleashuh in othah people’s HEAD SHOTS – Robot’s Root 1 June 2018

Morrissey has been officially tapped to direct Bond 25! I mean Danny Boyle. More interesting, even, is that he’s bringing his writing partner with him. This could be an intriguing project…

  • Surprising precisely no one, the Silver Sable/ Black Cat film from Sony with no tie in to the character that defines their existence, is very likely dead.
  • However, Legion has been greenlit for a third season! Don’t lose your nerve, Fox. I’m watching you.
  • Now you too (can’t really) have a TARS of your own.
  • Good lord! Lung turned me onto this DEEP study into the symbolism of Fury Road. I just thought it looked cool.
  • Body Bags, Jason Pearson’s old indie project (which I loved) is finally happening as a film from the Wickosphere… with Dave Bautista as Mack. That it’s called ‘Dogtown’ rather than Body Bags’ makes me wonder if we’re going to see it pull away from the randomness of the aesthetics of the book, including Mack’s mask and Panda’s busting at the seams cheerleader outfit and fro.
  • I’m not sure if it will pan out as much as it could via the premise, but Peppermint is at least notable in that I’m all for female led revenge action movies to offset all the male ones. It will be interesting to see if the ‘fridging’ talk will change now that it is the husband and daughter being killed as a plot device.
  • This animatronic achievement may or may not haunt your dreams, but it feels closer to Ghost in the Shell geishas than Pirates of the Caribbean drunk robots…
  • Sesame Street already lost their lawsuit. I love it.
  • The Sisters Brothers… could be a thing…
  • Han Solo Spoiler Section below…

Keep going…

  • I’d have liked to have seen Dryden Vos look like the second concept piece below. Interesting to read that he was one of the catlike designs when Michael Williams (Wire) did his scenes, but was changed to humanoid when Bettany came in… so I wonder why the physical design change for a mocap performance which it was originally. Make no mistake, I think Bettany was awesome. And apparently those weren’t scars, but tissue ridges that flared as hsi blood pressure rised, him not apparently being a scarred human at all… still, anyway, interesting.
  • Regarding these Falcon concepts, I like #12 and #23 because I wanted to see the pincer tip used as a cargo or device grabby bit… the pointy tip was never really explained. I also like #29 because it uses those side parts to siggest there were one more engines or… something… there.

When It’s Acceptable to get Hoffed – Robots Root 170712

Listen, I hate that David Hasselhoff song in the GOG2 soundtrack. It took a funny cultural nod in the film and sent it into pure kitsch territory. But I also acknowledge that Gunn comes from a Troma background, and this whole thing is post-modern to him. He can be incredibly emotionally invested in making the best possible film (and he is) and still feel enthusiastic about including 4th wall cheese in the closing credits (which he did)… so while I skip this track in the soundtrack (when my kids allow it) I WILL say I’m amused by how the cast is dolled up in this photo, and more generally, that they would engage in this sort of tomfoolery in the first place. Seems like a really fun set.

And now, from the void: Robot’s Root!

  • I don’t what to even think about all this Sonyverse business, but while many seem to be freaking out (in the negative) about the possible inclusion of Ann Weying in the Venom film (ex-wife of Eddy Brock) but it doesn’t mean she will be ‘She-Venom’ or that she’s even in any way the same relationship type as in the comics. The one positive point I can see here is that they suggest in the link that Venom isn’t a space symbiote, but a bioweapon. I like that much better.
  • Stranger Things 2: October 27 hell yes!
  • At this point I’m firmly convinced (unless I’m not) that Ridley Scott just free associates in these interviews. Now he’s roping in the (dreaded, at least to me) concept of introducing more Ripley family members. This is over-retconning to the nth degree, if so. I could sort of handle Ripley’s daughter in a video game I didn’t play, but otherwise, can’t a thing just be a thing? I guess when alien horror suddenly involves space jesuses, then maybe not.
  • Another round of slightly-better AI Paint Names. My favorite: SPICED ROPE.

  • I can’t get enough of Baby Driver. I haven’t even SEEN it yet. This was a little micro-video done for the Australian premiere, which I want as my neck tattoo. Not ‘tomorrow’ per se, but something sweet-as written into the speedo. Why not! Such as, perhaps, KURB RUSSELL, my new codename for action and adventure.
  • If you were on the fence regarding Luke Cage S02, fear no longer: Lucy Liu is involved. She directed the first episode. I mean, it’s not a high-heeled corporate efficiency expert or icy sword-swinging vengeance person, but still.
  • I’m digging on the photos from Black Panther. I’m REALLY digging this world building. Best detail, all the ritual scarring, especially on Michael P. Jordon’s character.
  • The trailer for the full season order of the Tick looks even better than the Pilot, which I quite liked. Toling you, it’s all about Jackie Earl Haley’s character… AGAIN.

A Cherry Blossom Urban Moment and Other Things – 29 June 2017

I’m really chuffed about my current iOS background. This too can be yours.

Meanwhile, I present: Robot’s Root!

  • Wow, so, I’m not sure the better takeaway on this one: inspect undercarriage for ticks on the regular, or have a full size water tank on hand for red ant attacks. Either way.
  • I think i see some cues from the Iron man Bleeding Edge armor in these Infinity War drone snaps. All the LEDS! Love it.
  • Lucas’ museum has been approved to go forward in LA, which is generally good news, because i’m in LA all the time, and I want to get up IN there.
  • Bloody, practical FX, Hellboy… these are all on my X-mas list…
  • I’m not going to Game of Toles night at the Giants stadium, but the GOT intro sequence is still one of my favorites, so this was a treat. Thanks, Lung!
  • I think it’s WAYYYY too early to get excited about the new The Batman… but I will say that all this noir Hitchcockian referencing works for me.
  • I really want to see Lord and Miller rejoin the Flash film. Think about it: DC desperately wants to ‘lighten up’ the DCU. Lord and Miller were fired for, among many issues, an overly-comical, improvisational tone to the footage shot and the script deviations taken (raging Kasdan into rage) … and finally, these solo films from DC struggle under the weight of their own imagery and nostalgia… Ezra Miller’s Flash thus far has been witty… how interesting would it be if Lord and Miller SUCCEEDED and made a good film for DC?
  • I can’t even with all this Sony business. Kraven and Mysterio solo films? Really? And Carnage is the big bad of a Venom film? SO MANY TENDRILS.
  • Watchmen as an ongoing on HBO was all anyone wanted in the first place, though I’m no hater of the film by any stretch.
  • You like Legos? And Fuchikomas? HERE
  • I want to like Inhumans. Despite everything. The trailer launched… and it’s devoid of tension. I don’t even. At least Lockjaw has a tuning fork, albeit a surface branded one… the way I like things in general, I guess. Glowy tattoos FTW. More breakdown here.
  • On the other hand, the Jumanji trailer launched and I LOVED IT. ‘you don’t go in the water with a backpack everyone knows that.’
  • I’m surprised by my own self, liking what I’m seeing from the Netflix adaptation of Death Note. It’s all about Willem Defoe + Death God as he’s always looked. Wow.
  • Valerian is getting better early buzz than I anticipated. If nothing else, not surprisingly, it needs to be seen on the big screen…
  • Hey cool, noirish trippy Alan Moore project that he actually wrote for live action so maybe 3% chance he won’t distance himself from it with vitriol. Looks great! On Shudder.
  • Spidey’s early buzz is REALLY good, which is also promising… meanwhile, Tom Holland is apparently an unintentional enthusiastic leaker who hasn’t been given the Infinity War script out of caution. He supposedly got the OK to tell folks it’s Peter parker (retconned) into IM 2… I like that nod. The connection of Stark to Parker was important in the comics, and I think it’s a big part of how the new phase of Marvel movies goes… speaking of, THIS is finally available…
  • So for those of you who’ve seen WW, you know that cool moment where she meets Chief, and speaks with him in Blackhawk? Apparently he introduces himself as Napi, a trickster god, and it was in the script. Also the first time she actually shakes someone’s hand. Interesting! Apparently in canon.
  • You may have read this (quickly debunked) interpretation of the story of Andy’s father in Toy Story… Im not convinced it’s NOT true, given the circumstances. I actually REALLY like it. It’s chilling.
  • Also, this happened: my new spirit animal

Thus and therefore, I leave you to your e-musings.

Hey Look Theres Jeff Goldblum – Robots Root 6 June 17

As if the Thor: Ragnarok trailer couldn’t get any better

Lo, tis Robot’s Root for 6 June 2017!

  • Charlie Heaton of Stranger Things up for Cannonball in New Mutants? I’ll take it. Meanwhile, Blu Hunt, a relative unknown, has been cast as Dani Moonstar. On the, uh, surface, she looks good to me. Acting? Ethnicity? Can’t say. Finally, Henry Zaga has been cast as Sunspot. Shrug!
  • Here’s a trailer for Preacher S02 I didn’t watch because blackout. Please, let me make it until 20 June…
  • I’ve seen at least 13 different clickbaity articles about the ‘leaked Punisher poster’… let me save you some time. It’s a skull. Sorted! Now, to hold breath until November…
  • So Millie Bobby Brown auditioned for the role of X-23… that’s interesting. I wish we learned that before recording our latest podcast on the subject. An interesting what if? comparison there…
  • John Wick 3 is GO!
  • Janelle Monae is on board for the Phllip P Dick anthology. That’s intriguing to me, as I love her deal, and I love that she wanted to be involved. I still don’t love anthologies, though.*
  • I don’t know if its true or parody that this ‘Paramount’s Dark Universe’ group shot was a composite (damn potochop!) but now I can’t stop staring at Russell Crowe’s hand. But man I still love most of this pic, especially bad as nails Sofia Boutella. When I first saw this pic last week, I cropped her out as pose reference for an upcoming art. I mean damn.
  • Earthling Cinema kills it, so to speak, once again with a review of Ex Machina. “AKA the Pollack Method”
  • Chris Hemsworth isn’t hurt about being left out of the last few films, right?
  • I’m no fan of Todd McFarlane or Spawn, but I love love love seeing the youthful iterations of later commercial properties. Close to my heart, of course.
  • The new Runaways series has been officially announced. I like Anka, but we’ll see how this new creative team, and direction, works in the context of the high standards of the past.
  • Finally, it sounds like the ST: Bridge Crew immersive VR game has stepped up to the promise of both the VR platform and the Star Trek gaming experience. I’m not in the market for more Playstation gear to languish unused in my living room, but I like what I’m reading.

Back to your work friend friending!

Ah Said No Peekin – Robots Root 30 May 2017

Last night we completed another session of the Robot-Kraken Podcast recordings for inclusion in the June episode. Special guests! Special liquors! Hot messes!

In the meantime, however, this is Robot’s Root for 30 May 2017:

  • I was talking with One Lung this morning (or typing) about films we’re looking forward to, beyond all the obvious marquee stuff coming out, and that led me back to trailers. So here, have some, for science:  Trailer 1: Baby Driver
  • Trailer 2: Logan Lucky. “ah said no PEEKIN!”
  • Trailer 3: Hitman’s Bodyguard
  • BONUS: Shimmer Lake on Netflix. IN!
  • This supposed brief on the new Silver and Black disaster-in-waiting Sony is cooking up for their Spider-Man Universe Without Marvel or Spider-Man or Something sounds sketchy. Like fanfic stuff.
  • Surprising precisely no one, SW VIII has been postponed while they violently rewrite the entire thing.
  • First look at Lockjaw from Inhumans: yep, giant bulldog. Missing the signature tuning fork and collar though, which is weird. So many weird choices on this project. I still haven’t recovered from the wig.
  • A little less than a month to go and we’ll have new Preacher. YASS.
  • In another (rather odd) example of studios remaking instead of building anew, Amazon just bought a series based on the film Hannah which (I haven’t seen, actually) I hear is based on every other young teen orphan assassin trope. Not that I don’t want to see the film. But I’d rather see original content greenlit.
  • The thicken plots… possibly… now they are admitting Joss Whedon has been quietly working on JL for awhile. This could be a sign that they knew and were planning to transition Snyder stepping down on a schedule, OR that he was already on board for script/shooting corrections. I do think it’s no coincidence that he was randomly announced as the writer/director of Batgirl this spring…
  • I’m half-way through the current glorious season of Silicon Valley, and I can’t conceive of the next season moving forward without TJ Miller. Dammit.
  • Really odd one here: Rosario Dawson is supposedly being courted for the role of Dr. Ceclia Reyes in the New Mutants film. It feels… fan speculationish… given that she’s already in the Marvel Universe (one of them) as a nurse… but hey, +1 always works for me.

And with that, I’m off to see if I can scrape some of this rum off of the inside of my cranial cavity…

Six Seven Go To Hell or Go To Heaven – 21 Mar 2017

Let me tole you: if I didn’t have kids in the home, and DID have $899 laying around…
link!

Meanwhile:

– As much as I crave new Hans Zimmer soundtracks, this interview, reposted across various sites, warmed my heart a bit, because I share a devotion to the Nolan Batman films as well. It’s a very intimate and purposeful connection, the soundtrack developed for that trilogy and the material itself. Nolan and Zimmer work well together, thematically (witness Inception and Interstellar for examples outside of the superhero genre) and when Zimmer did the Man of Steel soundtrack, while it was excellent and distinct, it was lending some of that former world’s pedigree to the new films in a way I found disconnected. link!

– Sony wants to proceed with fast-tracking Venom, without a script or director… in the post-Marvel-deal era, what do YOU want from a Venom film? I can’t decide. I really don’t like the character outside of Spidey using the suit and then slowly going batty from the symbiote’s influence. Once it jumped to other hosts and became 90seriffic, I was out. I do like the black ops version from recent years in the comics, but I don’t see how it would translate. link!

– Similarly, WB / DC seem intent on keeping the Flash moving forward (heh) despite multiple issues with the pre-production. That’s not a good sign. link!

– RIP Bernie Wrightson. That escalated fast.
Not my artistic influence, and I didn’t read a lot of his stuff, but I always admired it from a technical level and enjoyed reading about his convention persona. link!

– We’re doomed. More. link! Mega-rich oligarches in powered armor!

Image
– random Kraken-related jewelry for the day. AMAZING.

-I’m trying not to read anything about GOG2 these days… but I can’t get enough on Yondu’s cyber mohawk. link!

Image
– Expanse has been greenlit for Season 3, so I can now relax.
link!

– Alicia Vikander may be joining a new Ben Wheatley project involving kicking nocturnal underground beastie ass. His current project looks insane and awesome, so let’s be optimistic.
link!

Image
– Becky Cloonan’s poster for Ghost in the Shell is EVERYTHING. link!

– Reddit is questionable for a lot of things. But the AMA (Ask Me Anything) series is not one of them. Here’s Gareth Edwards… link!

Image
Your random Mike Mignola block-rockin art used as a bossbot’s iphone screen for today.

– I’m generally not a fan of cosplayers photographed and then given a bunch of post FX. I like the craft of the costuming itself, and that’s as far as I go. However, this is really well done. link!

– Apparently Hela knows capoeira in the new Thor film. I appreciate it’s a gladiator road trip movie, but that’s quite a diversion from the comics. Then again, probably a welcome one. Stand around and glower megagod types are boring on film. link!

– Good news for this guy, having just finished Peaky Blinders S03… S04 is due to begin production, and Tom Hardy will return. link!

– So Fox’s X-Men show for broadcast TV? The one with a family on the run with a mutant child, which seems to have little to know recognizable X-anything in it except for Sentinels? Is it going to be called Mutants on the Run? MutantsSuxxxx? Mutant? Nope. GIFTED. Srsly. I was gifted. I had to do more homework. That is all. link!

Image
Here’s your random Black Adam speculative rendering for today, by Chris Diem. Love it. Great proof of concept…

– Henry Cavill is on board for MI: 6. That’s interesting! I hope he’s a villain. Not a team member who betrays them, but a proper villain. link!

– How strange the wheel is… Matt Vaughn gave the X-Men franchise a brief moment of hope, before getting forced out by Bryan Singer. Now, after doing his own thing (Kick Ass, Kingsmen) he’s back in the big studio system’s favor for supehero tentpoles, being supposedly courted for the next Superman film. If true, that’s something to be modestly optimistic about, similar to what happened with batman. link!

Image
Here’s your random Bill S. pic of the day: Dr Doom!

OK, that’s all for now. Fear not and be just!

I don’t want to tread in body shaming controversy waters here (so to speak), but I’m with the apparently minority dissenting opinion, that he isn’t a negative stereotype of Polynesian male bodies, but a cartoon character. Abraham Attah has been seen in high school garb wandering around in early shooting for SM:Homecoming, and of course everyone has jumped on the Miles Morales thing. I’m kind of hoping not. What dubious costume you ask? These photos came out last night and we talked about them in the Robot-Kraken podcast we were recording soon thereafter. I called it Spider Garters. I mean, what is even. What is EVEN. Everything about this is confusing, coming off of the sweet design in Civil War.

This was an interesting story from last week: in an interview, Affleck seemed to suggest he turned down the hot seat for Force Awakens. I’m very happy with that film, but I have to wonder if he’s nervous about hitching to the wrong train, as far as directing goes. If his Batman kicks ass, it will be a triumphant counter to the negative stigma of BVS (in which he wasn’t even producing, let alone directing) but if not…

Video Game Roundup Part 02

More VR fun. I’m telling you, when Oculus was first emerging, I really didn’t see it. So to speak. And granted, the graphics in these new games are like 2000 era tech. BUT. I’ve seen some stuff from Rift and some other projects that blew my mind. And moving this tool into the major franchise realm is the key to acceptance.
