The Podcast That Forgot What it’s Like to Fear Death – Robots Root 6 Dec 2017

I WANT ALTERED CARBON IN MY FACE ASAP

Meanwhile…

Somewhere in space… it’s Robot’s Root:

  • Once again, Disney and Fox are “thisclose” to the deal… so, what do you think? Will Disney fold in the X-Men and FF properties as part of the likely multiverse thing coming after Infinity War?

  • Free Deadpool tattoos. What could go wrong? I’ll take free Negasonic tattoos though. And by free Negasonic tattoos, I mean applying tattoos onto what is already a peak hawt package. ZING!
  • I’d like all these Star Wars jackets a lot more if they didn’t have rebel logos or whatever on them. Less literal. Also, half this price.
  • Watch this GIF… do you hear it? I do.
  • It’s true: Nolan benefitted from a less compressed time of supers film production. He had a film in between each Batman film, and he told a story he cared about, largely or entirely without studio interference. However, he also benefitted from being Christopher Nolan in the first place. There’s a vision.
  • Interesting Stranger Things theory: is the demogorgon part of Eleven’s manifestation? I doubt it, given the events of S02… but still, good effort.
  • Here’s some cool concept art for Valkyrie from Andy park!
  • For Aeon-Flux fans, you can now watch the entire Liquid Television series streamed to your eyeballs like an errant fly.
  • As I’ve said on the pod, an AI vs AI vs AI direction in the Alien franchise sounds good to me. It just doesn’t make much more sense as a PREQUEL.
  • Batman almost had a shitty speeder bike in Justice League. Just look. Plus, somewhere, out there, there’s footage of the black Superman costume. I can’t wait until it surfaces.
  • Some potential Iron Fist S02 villain hints here in the casting notes… I mean, I could go either way, now that the showrunner has changed. Alice Eve was just cast as well…
  • NINJA TREE CLAWS
  • Margot Robbie is doing some sort of Harley Quinn something or other. I mean, who’s to say.
  • This Batman ninja business is the BUSINESS.
  • ADAM part 3 is no online. Hot damn.
  • Hellboy has a release date, and it’s too far away. Maybe, given what happened when they rushed JL, that’s OK.
  • Disney cast Mulan, and didn’t cock it up, even.
  • Historical nightmare fuel.
  • In an era of perpetual reboots, this plea from Alex Proyas against the Crow remake was pretty profound. Of course I’m of the age to have an emotional connection to that first film, too.
  • I haven’t watched any Black Mirror so far, but I might start

  • New images from next year’s Dark Phoenix surprise the hell out of me. My expectations were so low. This early look of Jean Grey transforming, even if its just stylized for these images… they’re really great. I like the cracking apart of her flesh. Not strictly consumed by fire, but also separating into component atoms. Wow. I also like the apparent change in concept for the Phoenix Force, and that the X-Men are popular, with Xavier being reckless in his deployment of the team beyond their capability, the hubris and overconfidence implied.
  • Finally, I’ve mentioned a few times that I’ve been watching, and enjoying, Runaways. We’ll be talking about that soon, but in the meantime, a good article about how the Hulu production makes good use of their established budget to put together FX for the deinonychus, Old Lace, featured in the show. It’s a good example of a production not overreaching beyond their budget, and spending the money wisely.

Ghost in the Tole – 23 Feb 2017

Two awesome posters for GitS. TOLING YOU GUISE…

Meanwhile:

1. Sweet! Some good news finally, on this Inhumans IMAX project: Iwan Rheon has been cast as Maximus the Mad. link!

2. Fans of Rob Zombie will no doubt be delighted to learn he is doing voice work on GoG2. I mean, because, the alternative would have been presumably a world where Rob Zombie didn’t. link!

3. Here’s a cast photo from Alien: Covenant. You can also watch some long ‘Last Supper’ scene if you wish. I shant and I wont. link!

4. Three Sci-Fi fan cheers for TRAPPIST-1. In our lifetime, such a discovery… link!
Plus, travel posters! Awesome: link!

5. I don’t know why everyone is so hung up on the next X-Men film apparently being another stab at the Dark Phoenix story. Sure, it’s more effective once the character of Jean Grey has actually been around for awhile first, and sure, it was half-assedly attempted in X-Men 3, but come on, it’s the franchise’s signature story. More interesting to me is the nod to Simon Kimberg moving from production to a central role as likely director. Meaning please please please free us from Bryan Singer as I have hoped. I’m prefer Vaughn again, but still. Forward. link!

6. Interesting: Battle Angel Alita has finished principle photography, and it’s been revealed that Michelle Rodriguez plays supporting character Gelda, a cyborg. Why would this have been a secret? Full mo-cap? Or something else? I know very little about the source material (surprising some, I’m sure) so I’m optimistic, just from the potential alone. link!

7. I like these new packagings for these Star Wars figures, which appear to be the Black Series but with cards made to look like the original Kenner blisters, which I love. That poseable Stormptrooper is the LIVING SHIT, but also, I was drawn to C-3PO’s silver leg, as it tugged at my memory but I couldn’t place it. Apparently no one else can agree on it either. Fans argued all sorts of stuff, which got more discombobulated the farther along we got in the production of the films, which retconned the hell out of themselves with the prequels and the EU stuff. I do remember now that his shin looked different, particularly on Tattooine, but it manifested as a reflective, just shinier gold. Anthony Daniels was quoted as saying that it was always silver, designed to make it look like a retrofit, but on tattooine particularly, it was reflecting the sand and the gold next to it. Anyway, fun diversion during a deadline for this guy.
link!

8. Matt Reeves is confirmed for Batman, I guess. OK! link!

Plus:

Image
Yvonne Strahovsky joined Predator?! Now two homina homina doomed soldiers or what have you!

Image
Jamie Chung jumped on board the X-Men series as Blink. Sure, OK, I like her a lot, let’s see her in purple…

Image
I’m two episodes in on Legion. We will be discussing on the Robot-Kraken Podcast soon. Amazing. Also, ALL THE THREES.

Its Hot and Wet – Also, Spider-Man 08 Dec 2016

Image

Coming to you from a storm in Honolulu… here’s the new Spidey trailer which you have surely watched 33 times. I’m quite satisfied.
link!

Meanwhile, THIS:

– The incredibly nuanced soundtrack for Westworld is now available for free streamed from Spotify. link!

– More misc. stuff on Ghost in the Shell. I forgot to mention, I thought it was pretty savvy that they used those little scrambled clips from the film we’ve seen before, but interrupting movie theatre bumpers, during Doctor Strange… like, ‘get your popcorn and coke over th—‘ and then it blurs into geishabots… link!

And speaking of Doctor Strange (review and podcast forthcoming) it is killing it in a way I didn’t expect at all, with all the no-punching and much-talking and even-more-drug… even against a Disney film. i mean a Disney Princess film. link!

– The next X-Men movie is apparently starting production on the Dark Phoenix saga… which won’t be a saga, but a highly compressed film… which I’m actually all for because I quite liked Jean and Scott in the most recent semi-hot mess. link! and PS… I was not a fan of James Marsters as Cyclops back then, being all rigid and blank, but on Westworld he’s really great. I can’t help but imagine him playing Scott Summers in a more nuanced role, perhaps something like what happened in the comics over the last few years… the red suit and the global takeovers and the Phoenix business and the basic villainy.

– Great article on one of my favorite Marvel characters in recent years: the Latina, gay, teen Captain America Chavez. link!

Bonus, my last illustration of her:

Image

– If you’re willing to pay for the extra content in the insidious/Darth Sidious system Sony has set up for DLC, you can play Jyn Erso in Rogue One… link!

– Nerd alert: check out the original edition of D&D… I’m always fascinated by those early days unwittingly kicking off an entire industry that was highly formative in my youth. link!

– If you liked Dexter, and you plan to pre-like Iron Fist (as I do) then you’ll find Inhumans in capable hands. link!

– If you know your George Miller Justice League that wasn’t history, you know Armie Hammer was almost in the red undies. Signs might suggest he’s heading for green ones next… link!

– Finally, I had SUCH low expectations, but Legion on FOX looks REALLY GOOD. link!

Now, the eternal sleep. Until morning. Or more TRDL work, not sure yet!

Curly Kicks and Hair Flips 2 May 2016

Image

At this point, though I am the Designated Optimist, Olivia Munn doing Hair Flips and Curly Kicks as Psylocke is the one remaining thing I’m optimistic about with X-Men: Apocalypse.

However,

Image
Fox was certainly hoping the last second Wolvie reveal in the new trailer would generate Spidey type buzz. It did not.

Image
Frankly, I’m more interested in Blob being in the film. HA!

Trailer here:

Image
Also of note, the sort-of 80’s X-Men costumes make an appearance. Sort of. I think if they just replicated the comics it would be even MORE believably 80s. But points for trying and using, you know, colors and stuff. Sophie turner looks weird in costume for some reason. Stance?

Image
Lastly, Bryan Singer is once again over-explaining and protesting about his choices in this film, from the fishy excuses about Apocalypse’s voice, to technology allowing for ‘performance editing’ while at the same time defending Oscar Isaacs’ performance. Hm.

But hey, at least we get sweet 80’s shoulder pads and easter eggs!

Welp, on the one hand, I still love what they did with the main cast. On the other hand, the baddies continue to alarm me, from the two we saw in toy fair promos, to now learning they messed with a good thing, and gave Slimer 2.0 TEXTURE.

DONT LOOK AT THIS CHICKEN and other things – 18 April 2016

Image

In other news,

Image
The controversy over the latest jab at the GitS film seems suspicious to me. The ‘multiple independent insider sources’ claim Lola FX was asked to ‘Asiafy’ Scarlett Johansson as a test, following the negative PR over her casting as Motoko… though immediately I wondered why any studio would suggest that approach in the modern era, let alone as a response to accusations of whitewashing. Then the report was violently disputed, several versions. It’s believable, I guess, that they would be that stupid, and it’s also believable, surely, that they would deny deny deny. But to me this raises larger questions, especially in a year that saw public outrage over several whitewashing casting choices the previous summer: does it matter? It cracks open the whole issue, not only of casting ethnically-specific characters as other ethnicities, but also whether their ethnicity is part of their character at all. I totally understand why the Asian international community would find suspect a film about Japanese characters in Japan casting largely Asian actors but changing the main lead to a non-Asian character and actor. However, is this not about box office draw and star-linkage to a film to make it a reality, financially, above all else? It reminds me of the whole thing about changing black characters white (conservative, cowardly) or white characters black (brave or offensive, depending on who is commenting) when it comes to super hero roles. Personally, I love when interesting actors are cast in these roles, regardless of what the source material called for, if it defined the ethnicity at all. Yet, I’m of course the white male box office majority viewer, who isn’t negatively impacted as an individual, culture, or ethnicity as a whole, by these decisions. I see why people are pissed. I just don’t think they are acknowledging the reality of financing movies and how little the executives and fund managers care about cultural sensitivity, alignment to source material, or anything else. EVERY character would look like a turnip if turnips were the biggest draw internationally. And frankly, some think Scarlett Johansson LOOKS like a turnip.

Personally, I’d have loved to see a truly all Asian cast for this film. So many great actors out there that would fit the bill, not only by ethnicity and look, by talent as well. I’m just not surprised that Hollywood didn’t commit to that concept.
http://screencrush.com/ghost-in-the-she … asson-vfx/

Plus, as Lung said to me offline, the OTHER takeaway from this article that was unnerving was the accusation that VFX were used to thin and curve out actors… much like photo retouching. I knew about the latter, but not about the former. Nauseating.

Meanwhile, this sampling of Japanese viewers commenting on the photo was enlightening. My favorite:

Well, THAT is interesting… for the new Jon Watts Spidey film with the logotype I’m still in denial about, Feige says Marvel is doing all creative production… so that means Sony is slapping their name on it, and Marvel is making the script, casting, and visual decisions. Thats… that’s VERY good news.

Never say never, but the utter lack of promotion for the soon to arrive Star Trek Beyond the Beyond or Whatever is NOT a good sign. First, helm changes (for the film, anyway), and then accusations of reworks, questionable trailers, radio silence…hm. I want to believe.
