Hows My Breath – Robots Root 9 Nov 2018

Laika’s Missing Link trailer makes everything almost OK. I so cannot even wait.

Meanwhile, in the Quantum Realm:

  • I love stuff like this. As an artist, I hoard ‘chronological costume reference’ material whenever I find it. Which isn’t often. I committed to drawing every Iron man armor, and I’m woefully behind. Granted I have more prints than most anyone else you’ll come across, but I have many to go.

  • Similarly, this Isle of Dogs poster makes me sweat. I want it framed, badly.
  • This 1:1 scale Venom bust is pretty incredible, and I say that as someone who doesn’t like the Venom design and thought the movie imagery looked ridiculous.
  • What the hell? A final Scooby Doo episode?!?
  • Jeremy Irons as Ozymandias? That’s brilliant casting, actually.
  • I was surprised at the news of a Cassian Andor series on Disney+, but I’m quite pleased with it. Rogue One is my favorite SW project, and a prequel series dipping deeper into the pre-Empire post-Sith era works for me.
  • I am not so enthused about the finally confirmed Loki series. They’d have to be pretty creative to make that show work for me. I don’t like him front and center. I like him as a foil and a conflict agent.
  • Honest Trailer for Incredibles 2, followed by How It Should Have Tole You.
  • I know I’m being overly-critical here, but the addition of Slimer undermines the poster for me.
  • Kingsman 3 without the main lead? Either they’re doing a misdirect (wasted energy, as no one cares) and will pull a Kingsman 2 and bring whomever the want back on a whim (I’m looking at you, Mark Strongbad) or they’re going to focus on the Statesmen, which I wouldn’t mind, though they are better as a side element, not the main show. Who knows, with this random franchise. We bludgeoned it to death in the recent Robot-Kraken podcast discussion…
  • Antoine Fuqua is doing a big budget sci-fi/adventure film called the Infinites, which feels very late aughts indie comic… I’m on board conceptually, based on the vague premise and the skills of the director. But an odd choice!
  • A nice look at the creature design in Guillermo del Toro’s work. Which is a short video, because he uses the same three affectations over and over, ha! I kid.
  • OK, now THAT is a costume skin I didn’t expect out of the new Spider-Man game on the PS4. Right down to the zipatone.

  • Jessica Henwick has joined Godzilla vs. Kong vs. Whomever. Which is just being posted as an excuse to show Jessica Henwick in pigtails with an Iron Sword again. You’re welcome.

With that I leave you. Excelsior!

I Get It, They All Said – 15 October 2018

So, I’ve been trying to catch up on Iron Fist S02, in advance of Daredevil S03 starting in a few days. I’ve said it before here, and on the pod, but it’s a lot better than S01. Anyway, this news came out right before the weekend: Iron Fist not renewed for S03, if kind, or Iron Fist cancelled, if unkind. It was a strange piece of news: Netflix virtually never cancels projects. They may not continue with new seasons, or hibernate, but they virtually never announce a project’s end. It made me wonder. Iron Fist S01 did not do well, but they felt enough confidence in the character, the actor, and the interconnected series’ as a whole to continue with S02 under new leadership, and to include Rand in Defenders. It seemed odd to cancel it as many people, like me, are still watching it (I hate this binge culture now. I don’t have that time!) in the immediate lead0up to another season of the group. So, I wondered… Netflix has had the development rights to these shows, and the Disney Streaming Service specifically was announced as not to include the Marvel Netflix stuff… but if I’m in Netflix’s position, why spend money on Marvel properties when they have already been spending a ton on all these other original programming projects. Any Marvel property now will be diminishing returns. Familiar eyeballs will tune in, but compare it to whatever comes down the pipe at Disney’s service, and from the looks of things on the Star Wars project, it will look pretty high-budget. That puts the ‘shoot it like a play’ methodology of the Netflix stuff and their limited, constantly recurring set-pieces, into more obvious critical focus. And less familiar eyeballs will look for Marvel stuff right in the Disney app, rather than remember what service happens to have them. So I wonder if they are negotiating handing these projects back to Disney, behind the scenes. If they wanted to kill the projects but keep them out of Disney’s hands, they wouldn’t make announcements, they’d just leave things open-ended. So I wonder: will all of the Marvel Netflix stuff eventually live on on the Disney service after all?

  • Here’s a great look at the final version of the Captain Marvel uniform (She of the maybe not 5 films) . There may be differences on film, actually, as this was posted by Andy Park, so it’s the final key art version, but things happen in production. I will say when I fan art this, i’ll be doing away with some of the bits and pieces to streamline it. Still, good reference piece!
  • Sometimes you screw up at work. Then there’s THIS.
  • Elon Musk says he’s interested in making a giant combat robot to solve all of our problems. I mean, he didn’t. He said the word ‘mecha’ and the internet imploded, as happens. The Gundam memes are flying.

  • Favreau posted this, a few days ago. I thought, huh, looks familiar. But couldn’t place where I’d seen that design. As it turns out, it was from the horrible infamous Xmas Special. I barely remember that show, or in fact I may have never even seen it, just seen enough clips and pics… anyway, it jogged my memory because I have the Boba Fett from that special in draw queue. Because colors. Anyway, so they took a nod from that. Pretty cool.
  • The young Alfred no one asked for.
  • Coogler is officially on board, directing a film about a pile of ash. RIIIIGHT
  • Speaking of Daredevil… I’m into the new season, and look forward to it’s release. I’d ALSO like this great deal on a Hell’s Kitchen apartment. Love viral marketing.
  • Best maternity photos ever. And I’ve seen some good ones.
  • Here’s some great retconning by Johnny Depp. No, he’s staggering because he’s drunk, he’s slurring because he’s drunk, and he’s drunk because you mimicked a version of Keith Richards. Let’s not make this a whole thing. Being box office poison on the Harry Potter stuff meant Jack Sparrow stuff would suddenly be in interviews, that was obvious. But let the thing be the thing.
  • There’s a lot to like about the new red and black Spidey suit. The belt is not one of them.
  • Well, we were fucked before, and we’re extra fucked now.
  • I don’t think these were used. But if they were, not thrilled, over here.
  • Here’s a fun video of Haunted Mansion with some young, familiar faces, and a lot of blurry business.
  • I’m out of the reasonable realm of having these around, with two impressionable younglings, but I love it. LOVVVVVVE it.
  • So into tabletop gaming using post-apocalyptic scratch-built Hot Wheels. Love it. Love it. LOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOVE it.
  • Yes. Inside a Tauntaun.

Finally, I can’t believe Venom has legs. I guess the inverted world we live in right now affects everything? Maybe?

*The title of this post refers to the strange predilection of the Iron Fist S02 scripts to have character say ‘I get it…’ ALL THE TIME, and frequently, you know, not get it.

You Wouldnt Like Me When I’m Angry – 28 Sept 2018

My first three reactions, from my first three viewings, of Dark Phoenix’s trailer were not great. But there’s more optimism out there in the fan reaction world than i anticipated. Plenty of doubt, too. I suspect, and frankly hope, that the males talking about Jean instead of showing much of anything about her manifestation is because they’re trying to keep as much of her actual vibe secret as long as possible. I hold out faint hope for a proper Dark Phoenix costume, too. It’s one of the best in the comics. Anyway, the trailer was mild. I do appreciate them showing us very little of the external antagonist, who I suspect is a hybrid of the Sh’iar and Mastermind. They kept the focus as a guilty family secret type situation. The best part was the most subtle: the faint Phoenix Fire image in the logo animation at the end, thus:

Meanwhile, in space, this may be happening right now:

  • I’m well into Marvel. I’m a legit zombie. But I could never get behind Eternals. I mean, I could get behind Selene maybe. But that aside, I mainly used them as post-Celestial cannon fodder in the Marvel RPG. But hey, Kirby is Kirby, and if it makes for a good movie, I’ll be there.
  • I can’t speak for the actress playing Black Canary, as I do not have any familiarity with her, but I’m enjoying the idea of Mary Elizabeth Winstead as Huntress in Birds of Prey. Where’s the photomanips?!

  • Also, I would LOVE Sharlto Copley as a Black Mask, if that happened.
  • An interesting point here about Han Solo’s cinematic failings, one that we were aware of in general, but it’s easy to overlook in the wake of fanboy raging: Disney dumped it into theaters two weeks after INFINITY WAR, and gave it minuscule marketing breathing room by Star Wars standards. Imagine if Han Solo came out in the December slot… not buried under the biggest Marvel film ever and still too hot to touch after the Last Jedi debates. And there’s this. And also this. But anyway, I’m a fan, and I’m looking forward to these deleted scenes
  • Do what you have to do. Make the best Hellboy that can ever be?

  • Finally, the first pic from The Boys. I’m down! It’s neat how much most of the cast looks like their comics versions and then Urban is just grizzly.
  • Nic Pizzolatto? Ben Foster? Noir grime? SO DOWN.
  • I know I’m the target age for this movie audience, but this was great.
  • I dunno. The classic comics colors on Aquaman are OK, but the gold armor is even better… hey, I’m just there for the vomiting.

  • I present: the Hybridizer. I mean, I did it for the old timey. But you do you.
  • Well, this is dope. Do the tapes fly out and attack you in Whole Foods?
  • The thing about the Venom movie is… I mean… just do THIS. Quit with the dancing around it.
  • This is beautiful and terrible. Boom!

And with that, I’m off into the redwoods to camp for the weekend, doing THIS pretty much non stop.

Save it for Comic Con – Robot’s Root 12 June 2018

This Spider-Verse movie may be the best comic-related anything ever, film specific. I’m astonished at how good it FEELS. Also, i’m in it for the cop dad.

  • Doctor Doom looks less likely, meaning even more likely a wholesale transition to Marvel’s stable.
  • For this guy, the Hit-Girl and related properties have lost their luster, but Millar and Vaughn have plans for more. Meanwhile, there’s another Kingsman movie in the works (I’m OK with it I suppose) and a turn of last century prequel (that’s what caught my eye, obviously)…
  • How about a GoT prequel set millennia earlier? You got it. Add it to the flaming pile…
  • I’ve got a fever, and the only cure is more Predators in my Predator. I guess.
  • Geoff Johns is out, but is he down? He’s still writing Green Lantern Corps, and now rumor has it Jim lee is stepping up to try and right the DCEU ship.
  • Kidding looks A M A Z I N G.
  • Bad Times at the What i TOLE!
  • Here’s a summary of all the supposed DCEU films in development. It’s stir crazy.
  • I admit I kind of want to draw all these heroes killed in Incredibles 1… or already dead… or what have you. Capes, bots, etc.
  • A well-reasoned and thoughtful consideration to the question: Is is disrespectful to drive around a dead Autobot as a car?
  • Tran leaving social media was probably good for her mental health, but sucks for all of us. She was an awesome celeb to follow, and really loved Star Wars fandom, the same crew that ate her alive and then complained about the taste.
  • I don’t know why, but I like when supers costumes are damaged or modified, as if purpose built and then evolved as circumstances change. Like Captain America’s main suit transitioning to a ‘covert ops’ version, in turn basically debadged and worn down by the time Infinity War happens. Or, as we see in this pic of Janet Van Dyne, layered.
  • So stoked on the new Hellboy film. Mignola nails it.
  • These games continue to fascinate me, even as I have no time to play them. The societal evolution in the worlds and the mechanics that allow for it is good reading.
  • I haven’t even CRACKED Star Wars: Battlefront 2 yet, but the Han Solo packs look good.

Thats all for today… still decompressing from SFCC and preparing for Fandemic!

You Have 3 Seconds to Comply: Robots Root 11 April 2018

Dig this new Mondo poster: ROBOCOP by Josan Gonzalez

Meanwhile, in space, all of this is happening right now!

  • Taika Waititi confirmed that he’s not adapting the Akira film, but rather going after the voluminous book series. I find that interesting. There’s so much more THERE there, and also gives him more to do than just a remake.
  • Speaking of ambitious, Apple is adapting the I, Robot series of works from Isaac Asimov.
  • Woody Harrelson may or may not be playing Carnage in the Venom film. I say DO IT.
  • Transformers cartoon opening credits, shot with the toys in stop-motion WINNNNNNS.
  • The Deadwood film production just got a tax credit. This gives them a timetable, which is a good thing.
  • Christina Hodson has been named as the new Batgirl writer. This is also a good thing.
  • Boss Level sounds really neat or really terrible.
  • If you want to know secret stuff that isn’t surprising stuff, regarding Iron Spidey in Avengers: Infinity War, read on. In other Marvel news, I think this poster shot shows that Evangeline Lily should have been a Marvel heroine years and years ago. She looks really motivated.
  • Eric Bana is set to star in the first season of Dirty John, some sort of anthology-based true crime show on Bravo that isn’t True Detective on HBO, and inexplicably features a character name as the title, which begs questions about it’s anthology nature.
  • This is pissing all the right people off: Westworld creators said they’d let Reddit superfans in on the active development of S02, which starts later this month… they announced a few days ago that their plan was to circumvent the huge hunt for answers and easter eggs and spoilers by actually giving the subreddit access to a video that explains the S02 plot, so they can opt-in if desired, as long as they keep it to themselves and don’t leak it to mainstream press. Then last night they released a video, which ended up being an elaborate Rick-Roll… LITERALLY… I love it. Speaking of, you know I’m down with S02’s Shogunworld.
  • The Shazam costume may or may not be objectively bad… but I liked Zachari Levi’s comments about the intrinsic insecurity of pre-haters.
  • I was totally into it, until I realized the pilot’s legs are fake and its just a stilt construct. I mean, not JUST, but you know.
  • Moviepass users (aka Deeply Dapper) rejoice: AMC theaters were just unlocked. That’s pretty huge.
  • The BBC is launching a big budget early 20s adaptation of War of the Worlds. I’m 300% on board…
  • I initially dismissed Bosslogic’s manip of Krasinski and Blunt as Reed and Sue of the FF as being too current, given the obsession with their current film… but looking at it more closely, I’d be down with all of these casting ideas. I still think Richards needs to be older, greying and aloof… but even more than that, they need to be a believable couple… and this pair have proven they can be, on screen…
  • More featurette film stuff from Isle of Dogs, this time about the real on-set canine crew….
  • Finally, trailer roundup:
    • The Meg, which I always assumed would be terrible, actually amused me. So much reminding me of Jaws 3 in 3D… but also Deep Blue Sea, which I actually never saw. I do love 4th wall characters like Rainn Wilson’s one here, just saying it like it is.
    • Similarly, I dismissed Upgrade when the teaser came out awhile back as being a B-movie… but it does have some interesting elements in it. Logan Marshall-Green affects an unusual stance when the AI is doing the fighting for him, almost a hangjawed expression and slouched neck against a rigid posture, but he was Shocker #1 in Homecoming and soldier X in Prometheus, so let’s give it a shot.
    • Terminal appears to be based on a pitch like: “Imagine Atomic Blonde but with Margot Robbie and made to look like Lock Stock plus we’ll include one of those actors even, for authenticity“… but I’m still on board.

The Cavalcade of Helmetless Heroes – Robots Root 9 Mar 2018

Herewith, witness the Calvacade of Helmetless Heroes FFS!

Meanwhile, in space, this may be happening:

  • Honest Trailers does He-Man
  • My favorite How to Dad video yet.
  • I kinda like this promo pic for Daredevil S03… done by Joe Q, even. I’ ve always been a fan of lettering pushed into the environment of the piece.
  • I have to agree: if we couldn’t have an actually FORMIDABLE foes in Phasma, at least give her this scene to show her ruthlessness…
  • Now here’s the full trailer for Prospect, which still adorns my desktop as a background screen…
  • Killmonger concept art shows that the final version was the best choice. I still wish he kept the mask on the whole time… it was awesome.
  • More neural net fun, this time with sentence gradients.
  • Again, not a horror fan, but Endless looks pretty interesting. Lovecraftian doomsday cult business. Sure!
  • Dafne Keen is on board the new big budget take on His Dark Materials… I think they are abandoning the Golden Compass released prior…
  • Krysten Ritter says no Defenders S02 was planned, nor does one look likely. Depending on how you felt about S01, your mileage varies on this news…

  • Official confirmation direct from Patty Jenkins of Kristin Wiig joining WW2 as Cheetah. I’m intrigued!
  • Karl Urban confirmed that, as suspected, Alex Garland not only wrote Dredd, but stepped in and directed it once the director was canned.

  • Welp, pre-FX aside, Shazam’s costume does indeed appear to be the classic one, with the ubiquitous fine texture weave I hate so much. The fake muscles are weird, but I like the way they handled the lightning bolt, and the cool nod to the golden age books with those Talky Tawny symbols at the cape. The cape design itself, with the stiff hood, is creating a weird massing to his upper half, something I’ve worried about when designing a similar vibe on some TRDL characters with hoods…
  • Rumors are afoot that Jessica Drew may be brought into Spider-Man 2 as a female lead. I’d be down with it. Super down!
  • Neat: Jon Favreau has been announced as helming a Star Wars live action show, presumably for the new streaming service.
  • Mackenzie Davis from Halt and Catch Fire (and more recently, Blade Runner 2049) may have been tapped for Terminator 6… which bodes well for Terminator 6…
  • Elseworlds may be dead… but Black Label is new, and is basically the same thing. I like that Wonder Woman, if nothing else.
  • I love that Westworld not only embraces their obsessive fan community of conspiracy theorists and plot hypothesizers (like this guy) they are actively involving them/us in S02.
  • Reshoots on Deadpool 2… after bad test screenings… thats not good. As nice as the current pedigree technically is (re: our recent podcast about Atomic Blonde and John Wick 2) I wonder what we lost when Tim Miller left.
  • NEED
  • I remain uninterested in Superman comics, but I think BMB is right: optimism is what sets him apart from other characters, and needs to be the focus. All Star Superman was successful in this way.
  • I am SO DOWN with the Morrison/Quitely New X-Men costumes happening here. FINALLY.
  • Lastly, Lego Pacific Rim sweding! Excellent. I’d rather watch that.

Solo Trailer Revealed – Robots Root 4 Feb 2018

It’s finally coming this Monday, they say. Or they lie, and it’s a Superbowl thing. Or they lie, and this project doesnt even exist.

Meanwhile, this is happening:

  • “Action that looks like two Radio Shacks doing kama sutra in a hurricane” – one of the best Honest Trailer lines ever.
  • We’ve Known BMB was moving to DC for awhile now, but it’s official: he’s wandering into the Superman quagmire. What concerns me more, though, is that there are implications that he may be bringing his creator-owned stuff with him. I very much do not want Powers absorbed by DC. Somebody talk me off the ledge, please.
  • I’m beside myself. Normally I’m disinterested in dark and grimy redesigns of classic characters as the solution to film adaptation. But in this one instance, these concepts for a He-Man project look pretty amazing. Cool ways to rationalize the toy elements that make no sense. I know I’ve argued multiple times that most of the designs should just be left alone and ran with, but still.
  • I don’t hate JJ Abrams so the fact that HBO bought Demimonde is fine with me. Budgets!
  • I dislike his modern movies, and I’m weirded out by his bulging face when he talks, but. “Aight potatoes, aight carrots, aight turpentine.” I think I need to know more about Scottish shopping habits.
  • I’m including this since we’ve made a general tradition of butchering her name on the Robot-Kraken Podcast, but this segment on ‘Galspalining’ cracked me up.
  • Look, dont let the fart sounds fool you: teaching Orcas to make human sounds is a B A D . I D E A.
  • The fundamental problem with Venom... which is why they are TOTALLY sneaking Spider-Man in there.
  • Fun, contextual easter egg from Doctor Strange over here.

Finally, my entire world feels like this right now.

We are a few hours away from recording another session of the Robot-Kraken Podcast! If you haven’t been keeping up, head over to itunes and subscribe! Reviews and stars and such don’t hurt either! Good stuff to follow…

Six Seven Go To Hell or Go To Heaven – 21 Mar 2017

Tomenosuke PRO Blaster
Let me tole you: if I didn’t have kids in the home, and DID have $899 laying around…
link!

Meanwhile:

– As much as I crave new Hans Zimmer soundtracks, this interview, reposted across various sites, warmed my heart a bit, because I share a devotion to the Nolan Batman films as well. It’s a very intimate and purposeful connection, the soundtrack developed for that trilogy and the material itself. Nolan and Zimmer work well together, thematically (witness Inception and Interstellar for examples outside of the superhero genre) and when Zimmer did the Man of Steel soundtrack, while it was excellent and distinct, it was lending some of that former world’s pedigree to the new films in a way I found disconnected. link!

– Sony wants to proceed with fast-tracking Venom, without a script or director… in the post-Marvel-deal era, what do YOU want from a Venom film? I can’t decide. I really don’t like the character outside of Spidey using the suit and then slowly going batty from the symbiote’s influence. Once it jumped to other hosts and became 90seriffic, I was out. I do like the black ops version from recent years in the comics, but I don’t see how it would translate. link!

– Similarly, WB / DC seem intent on keeping the Flash moving forward (heh) despite multiple issues with the pre-production. That’s not a good sign. link!

– RIP Bernie Wrightson. That escalated fast.
Not my artistic influence, and I didn’t read a lot of his stuff, but I always admired it from a technical level and enjoyed reading about his convention persona. link!

– We’re doomed. More. link! Mega-rich oligarches in powered armor!

Image
– random Kraken-related jewelry for the day. AMAZING.

-I’m trying not to read anything about GOG2 these days… but I can’t get enough on Yondu’s cyber mohawk. link!

Image
– Expanse has been greenlit for Season 3, so I can now relax.
link!

– Alicia Vikander may be joining a new Ben Wheatley project involving kicking nocturnal underground beastie ass. His current project looks insane and awesome, so let’s be optimistic.
link!

Image
– Becky Cloonan’s poster for Ghost in the Shell is EVERYTHING. link!

– Reddit is questionable for a lot of things. But the AMA (Ask Me Anything) series is not one of them. Here’s Gareth Edwards… link!

Image
Your random Mike Mignola block-rockin art used as a bossbot’s iphone screen for today.

– I’m generally not a fan of cosplayers photographed and then given a bunch of post FX. I like the craft of the costuming itself, and that’s as far as I go. However, this is really well done. link!

– Apparently Hela knows capoeira in the new Thor film. I appreciate it’s a gladiator road trip movie, but that’s quite a diversion from the comics. Then again, probably a welcome one. Stand around and glower megagod types are boring on film. link!

– Good news for this guy, having just finished Peaky Blinders S03… S04 is due to begin production, and Tom Hardy will return. link!

– So Fox’s X-Men show for broadcast TV? The one with a family on the run with a mutant child, which seems to have little to know recognizable X-anything in it except for Sentinels? Is it going to be called Mutants on the Run? MutantsSuxxxx? Mutant? Nope. GIFTED. Srsly. I was gifted. I had to do more homework. That is all. link!

Image
Here’s your random Black Adam speculative rendering for today, by Chris Diem. Love it. Great proof of concept…

– Henry Cavill is on board for MI: 6. That’s interesting! I hope he’s a villain. Not a team member who betrays them, but a proper villain. link!

– How strange the wheel is… Matt Vaughn gave the X-Men franchise a brief moment of hope, before getting forced out by Bryan Singer. Now, after doing his own thing (Kick Ass, Kingsmen) he’s back in the big studio system’s favor for supehero tentpoles, being supposedly courted for the next Superman film. If true, that’s something to be modestly optimistic about, similar to what happened with batman. link!

Image
Here’s your random Bill S. pic of the day: Dr Doom!

OK, that’s all for now. Fear not and be just!

Micro-Review: Blade Runner in the Wild and etc 9 March 2017

Micro-Review: Blade Runner in the Wild
A few weeks back I had the opportunity to see an outdoor showing of Blade Runner, accompanied by our own One Lung. It was pretty amazing. The cut was the director’s edition, no voice-overs, no happy ending.

Image
I got their early, expecting it to be packed, being a small outdoor viewing area with limited seating, and a hipster neighborhood in a hipster town (SF)… what I hadn’t anticipated was the fear of FREEZING, as it was extremely (regional context) cold and very windy, and the previous night’s original showing date was canceled due to heavy rain.

Image
As a result, I was sitting out there for about 40 minutes before Lung showed up, tucked into my blankets and snow gear, ha. The guys from Fort Point Brewery were on hand wth IPAs so I had one of those, and once Lung arrived I ordered a pizza from a deep dish place up the street.

Image
The pizza time ran long due to Saturday night crowds, so I missed a chunk of the film, after Leon’s test and up until Rachel shows up at Deckard’s house. So no owls for me. However, in the meantime, my handy Dharma flask from Deeply Dapper kept me warm! The pizza was excellent, the film was especially immersive, being outdoors in a high traffic area, where we had a line of honking cars and yelling pedestrians, and lots of lights and activity, just at the peripheral of the screen. It was like a poor man’s Star Tours, but in an expensive city and with less intended motion.
So awesome.

Meanwhile:

– Who doesn’t need ALIEN tiki mugs in their lives?
link!

– The first review of Iron Fist is in, and it isn’t… favorable. Wow. I’m still optimistic. I seemed to have tolerated Cage’s slow spots and dubious final boss more than most. But I think when you already have a street level martial artist (Daredevil) it is hard to make IF compelling unless you go WHOLE HOG with the asian mysticism… but from the trailers, and this review, it sounds more like another run at Stark, boardrooms, and whining. We’ll see. At least it’s going to be better than the ABC stuff.

– GREAT ‘Different Spider-Man Comic’ … 100% MINIMUM ACCURATE

This remains my favorite standalone Hellboy image ever. Ever ever? Ever EVER. I had a print of it years ago, long destroyed, and I had an original pen sketch of similar profile, which was also destroyed due to UV foolishness. Love it.

Related: The Mignola Appreciation Group on FB often posts ‘sound effect’ of the day… based obviously on the enthusiasms around Mignola’s choices of onomatopoeia… this is my current favorite example. Best Drip Drip Drip of the Day.

This manip still cracks me up.

More Expensive Than the Armor Itself – 18 Oct 2016

Image

Buried in the bottom third of this article-ette: I hadn’t somehow noted until now that RDJR is purportedly getting $100M PER MOVIE for the next two Avengers films… and one assumes that is on top of the massive back end deal. Good for that guy.
via

Meanwhile…

Image
ITEM: Speaking of RDJR, they set up a full-on writer’s room for Sherlock 3, which is unusual. Probably if nothing else a good sign that they want to cook the best script they can for the next piece.
via

:::

Image
ITEM: New photos have emerged from Alien: Covenant. Now, yes, there are new Xenomorphs and yes, one has a yuck mouth with human teeth in it, and yes, there are very familiar designs for the egg sacs and such… but I’d like to point out that this Facehugger has a massive anus. And that it appears to be YOOGE, judging by those skulls for scale. The Facehugger, not the anus. Well, both. Happy Friday.
via

:::

Image
ITEM: Talk about a good sport… this cracked me up…
via

:::

Image
ITEM: I’m nauseated by how the sexist minority of male-dominated comic fanboys debased themselves to the point that writer Chelsea Cain quit Twitter and probably left Marvel. Her Mockingbird series is still a few years out, at the rate I’m reading, but I’ve seen excerpts and it reminds me a lot of Faction’s Hawkeye: unconventional storytelling, great characterization, and novelist-style approach to comic scripting. Apparently an independent, divorced, ass-kicking female spy was too much for that contingent… even before she wore this shirt on the cover of the last issue. Madness. Fortunately a healthy host of creators have been pushing hard on this in social media, showing solidarity towards her, and the ongoing changes to the comics world that have seen a greater number of female written, female led books (particularly at Marvel) than ever before. For my daughter’s, AND my son’s sake, we need more of this.

Finally, the best of this concept ever done. EVER. Well-played, Don.
