Load-Bearing Reference Material – Robots Root 22 Oct 2018

Geoff Darrow is abandoning THIS space in Chicago… and moving to France. HOT DAMN I want to go to there.

Meanwhile, science. Space science:

  • Ana de Armas, 99% of the non-Ryan Gosling sexiness in Blade Runner 2049, has hopped onto Knives Out. I’m telling you, this movie will be a thing.
  • Capture the Lab.
  • With the exception of the ongoing weirdness of the cape straps, the new all-black Superman costume from Supergirl is probably the best looking suit in the modern era yet. So little unnecessary texture…
  • Guardians of the Galaxy 3: Hot Christmas… well, despite using the script, I fear that this movie may be redubbed hot ass if they don’t figure something out. And not in a good way.
  • The millisecond after T’Challa ashed up in Avengers: Infinity War, my first thought was SHURI in the suit.
  • Miss Bala looks good to me. I like the setting and the way Gina Rodriguez is sucked in. Optimism is key. Plus, I liked her before, but really got into her after Annihilation.
  • Saddest thing about the momentary loss of Iron Fist is the lack of Jessica Henwick on screen as Colleen Wing. And now that Luke Cage has also been canceled, signs do continue to point to the Disney service: the contract renewal for the Marvel Netflix shows just so happened to be at the same time as the streaming service launch. Now, let’s just skip to the end and get a Daughters of the Dragon (and a Heroes for Hire, why not) series at Marvel properly.
  • The best thing about Grant Hurlburt’s project to draw one frame from each movie he sees is how he elevates some of the dogs.
  • A well-timed look back at when a Venom on screen was even worse.
  • SPOILER: Only follow if you’ve seen more than the first half of Daredevil S03. PS this season is AMAZING so far. Just next level. Two scenes so far have been legendary. This talks about one of them.

That’s all for today. Brought to you by the 33% Nation of Tumbler wheels.

Short Tunic and a Loooooooooong Cape – Robots Root 31 Oct 2017

Robots Root, 64 oz size!

  • Kind of obvious, but I was stoked to see D’Onofrio officially on board in DD S03, especially given the kind of underwhelming, if classic, Born Again plotline. It gives me at LEAST a Kingpin to enjoy.
  • If Gareth Evans does indeed sign on to Deathstroke, that means if nothing else a kick ass fight film. Which seems appropriate.
  • The full Runaways trailer shows some powers, familiar looks, and at least do far isn’t ruining any major surprises comic fans would know.
  • The new Justice League trailer shows Steppenwolf more fully. I wasn’t going to watch, then I realized I’d be overseas when it comes out so things will be spoiled anyway…
  • Um. I mean, I’d still buy one. I love that stuff. But hey, bonuses I guess.
  • Zachary Levi has been confirmed as playing Captain Marvel, I mean SHAZAM I guess at this point, which I’m enjoying. I like the actor, and I think he can bulk up to where it needs to be, as John Krasinski and Chris Prat did. It will be interesting to see if we get a young Billy Batson, or an older one in keeping with the apparent continuity of the DCEU. My favorite of the fan art that came out early this week is above.
  • I don’t watch Supergirl or any of the CW super shows… but wow… check out the costume for new villain ‘Reign’… that’s realllllly badly envisioned. A chattering skull in a super sigil logo on a black version of Supergirl’s costume, plus a Hot Topic mask? GUH.
  • Paramount has been auctioning off costumes and props from the recent Star Trek film. I haven’t talked mush about ST: Discovery yet, as I’m waiting for my cohorts to watch it so we can discuss on the podcast, but one positive, at least in part, has been the overhaul of the Klingon designs. Seeing these Klingon armors, especially the helms, makes me even happier with the show.
  • Best bike-based Star Wars styled Halloween costume anything EVER.
  • This R/C Batmobile is BAD ASS. I still prefer the Tumbler, but hot damn, rotating turrets (for murderdeathkill DCEU Batman!) 24″ of pure powah.
  • He was answering more broadly about his willingness to return to Marvel for another film, not specifically a Black Widow film, but Taika Waititi noted he’d like to see a funny Black Widow. I don’t doubt he’d pull it off, one of those ‘she’s the straight face with lots of eye rolling and groaning at the incompetence of everyone else’ type projects… but I still just want my urgent spy thriller.
  • Speaking of, Olivia Munn has been cast in Hummingbird, which is, you know, that.
  • And here’s the opposite of Olivia Munn, Mads Mikkelsen in Polar. Also awesome. WANT!
  • I forgot to mention this after retweeting it on Twitter… because thats what the cool kids do… but Preacher has been greenlit for S03, which is great news.
  • Our review and discussion (and befuddlement at trying to map out the plotline after seeing it in the middle of the night) of Blade Runner 2049 is forthcoming on the podcast, but this was interesting: they considered making it a two part 4 hour film. There is a definite divide in the narrative, indeed each half begins with the eye, etc. I’m glad they took it the direction they did, though.
  • This is the stuff of superhero or paranormal or alien film prologues…
  • Finally, here’s a Stranger Things candle that I love highly.

Happy Halloween y’all! Enjoy your syringes and bath salts and Charleston Chews!

We Were Wizarded, We Were Worlded – Robots Root 19 June 2017

We’re back from Wizard World Sacramento. Soon to embark on a journey to Portland for Heroes & Villains Fanfest/Walkter Stalker this coming weekend. More embarking for Kris than me… well, more journeying anyway: he’s driving back to Idaho now, and will then drive BACK to the west coast for Portland. I’m hopping on Alaska Airlines.

It was an interesting time, Wizard World Sacramento. Some good, some not so good. We recorded a daily post-mortem which will be part of our July Robot-Kraken Podcast, along with discussion about Portland’s show. The bullet points, though, in the meantime:

  • The show was about a third smaller than it was two years ago when we did it last, and apparently it was bigger last year. We aren’t sure what happened. The wrestler guests, and the associated fans of them, were not there, but the smaller carved out section of the venue also suggested that they didn’t have as many tables and exhibitors, and I know customers complained that the guest list for celebrities wasn’t well stocked until pretty short notice. On my end, I didn’t feel that was particularly the case, or that the show wasn’t planned well or promoted. They did make a substantial layout change that put celebrities to the side instead of in the back, which breaks artist alley, as we depend on people coming and going to the photo ops and signings. But otherwise, it wasn’t egregious. WW staff were friendly and responsive, and the noise level from some of the larger events in the space wasn’t overwhelming, even if it was a bit much for my taste (karaoke all day friday, a funk band on Saturday, and Star Wars lounge singing on Sunday (which itself was originally a parody concept, right? Now it’s come around the other side and become a thing)) and though we were placed right behind a huge random State Farm VR exhibit, it wasn’t loud or distracting at all. The event seemed well stocked with food vendors, and people were digging the bottomless adult beverages that were available.
  • There was far less foot traffic than expected. In fact, much of the time guests were sort of wandering down the center of the aisles and not approaching tables. When the guests are plentiful (or if the space is cramped, which is not ideal) the customers tend to hug the tables and check things out. Here, it was like they were just tumbling down an air duct.
  • I had several customers go through the books and seem very interested and then wander off. I had two groups of guests that went to get money or use the restroom and never returned. It’s a risk you take. I could be more aggressive about making a deal before they leave, I guess. I gambled because they wanted to look more and pick additional prints, and ended up taking nothing home. In general, the interest in my table was less than hoped for, but I can’t complain about the good conversations I had, and without fail, those that bought something tended to be enthusiastic about it, which is great. All but one took home multiple items.
  • I had a good time connecting with cosplayers, showing them art of their character, etc. Many came by several times. Some were customers. It was one of the nice things about having a substantial print selection now, as compared to previous years. I could point stuff out on the fly! With my work now taking up three 13 x 19 binders on the table, it spans a hair over a standard 6′ booth, and fits OK in an 8′ booth. I have another 150-200 prints in process, so I may need to consider beginning to show half-scale copies 2 to a page in the binder for some of them. I need to stay to the three binder only I think.
  • I nerded out a bit when I saw Cas Anvar from Expanse at the show. I went over and shook his hand and talked to him for a brief second, but then headed back to my unmanned table. He was pleasant.
  • As with prior trips to Sacramento, the highlight was food. We had a great night at South (fried chicken spot) and had some good pizza as well. Made some new friends too.
  • Listen to the podcast in July for a more in-depth look at these June shows, and a discussion about the future of Wizard World, and our future at that venue as well. I’ll post some photos to Instagram and FB as time permits…

Robot’s Root!

  • The Russo Bros posted a mysterious photo of a mysterious thingie. Between this and Scarjo’s note of like 333 characters in Infinity War, I have to wonder what kind of viral what have yous are we going to be seeing in the few months prior to release… there’s going to be teaser burnout…can you imagine a world where NOTHING about this film was leaked, and no trailers of any plot significance were revealed? I love to imagine such a thing.
  • Kris and I were supposed to see The Mummy this weekend, prepared for low common denominator fun, but didn’t get to it, because fried chicken. BUT, wow. This does NOT sound good.
  • Cue the interwebs, violently googling for ‘pre-CGI boobs’ for the Scooby-Doo film…
  • Oh come ON, Justice League…
  • Who wants Supergirl in the DCCU? I mean, it’s a pretty obvious guess, with no reasonable authenticity, but it’s also a safe one. So whose to say. But anyway, possible!
  • I didn’t get too far into this video, comparing All You Need is Kill (manga) with the Edge of Tomorrow film adaptation, because it just made me want to both seek out the manga, AND rewatch the first film, so I stopped the spoilering against my poor memory. Ha. Spoilers on a movie I already saw, and frankly really liked.
  • Lung and I were discussing this one late last week, but HOW AWESOME… Matchbox cars, sorted!
  • Daniel Day Lewis just retired. That’s interesting. Most actors retire from either running out of castable roles, disappearing into the ether, or the deaths. This was a peculiar final announcement, prior to supporting his now-final film with longtime collaborator PT Anderson.

That’s all for today! Keep your eyes peeled on the medias for all the photos to follow…

Rebelling as We Do – 14 October 2016

WELP. I held out watching this second Rogue One trailer for about three entire minutes at 3am. I caved. It’s glorious of course, though it confirms more things I didn’t want to know yet. I think my will is too weak for blackouts. My favorite thing in this trailer full of favorite things is of course, OF COURSE, this tentacled face dude in her cell with her. AWESOME.

ITEM: You know I try to stay apolitical on these communication channels, because life is short and I have no interest in debating. However, regardless of what side of the insanity line you find yourself on, you HAVE to admit Geoff Darrow’s piece here is brilliant.

:::

Image
ITEM: So, last week, right before I left for the mountains, CW inexplicably released THIS now infamous photo of Tyler Hoechlin in costume as the new Superman as featured on the Supergirl show. The internet cried for 10 hours straight. Admittedly, the backlash memes have been excellent. My favorite reference was: someone move the Kryptonite away from him. He came off as incredibly seedy looking, with a build and posture that said whatever’s the opposite of Superman, and a creepy gaze. I felt like I was seeing some alternate universe thing where one of the Falcones was wearing the suit. Also, my design sensibilities are outraged: loose belt, weird long underwear texture in the bodysuit, and those strange smooth ‘cape ends’ as they attach to the chest (which in other photos are all he wears, the cape being digital) with those gold trim pieces… along with the always-unpleasant stretched-out supercollar.
Image

Reality is, TH can look ruggedly handsome and much more on-model, so I think this may be a fluke. But it takes me back to all the other marketing flubs I can’t grasp: how they could let it out the door. All the eyeballs on it. If its one of those ‘all the designers and marketing folks said it sucked but the executive insisted’ things, I hope it comes to light. The show has shown pretty consistently good costuming, as far as I can tell, and good casting choices… so who knows. But wow, way to FAIL THE WEEK AFTER SDCC.

:::

Image
ITEM: From Family Guy, and true. Dying.

:::

Image
ITEM: Matt Taylor sketched classic Harley Quinn, which was subsequently made into a statue and painted, for SDCC. Looking at this, you can sort of get a sense of how Margot Robbie in jester attire might have worked well. Mostly I imagine it not. But here, wow.

:::

Image
ITEM: We talked about all the SDCC stuff in our latest Robot-Kraken podcast due for release later this week, but one of the things I thought strange about Kong Island, despite the trailer being full of many cool images (including this) is that the money shot for the poster is a direct riff on Gareth Edwards’ Godzilla. Now, Kris noted that, especially with the larger Kong, they HAVE to be angling for a monster mash film… I just feel sort of surprised at the blatant nod.

ITEM: Stylishgeek shows that the movie iteration of Psylocke’s costume, with some altered cuts and angles, looks much better, and more comofrtable. I’d still have gone with normal shorts rather than the 80’s high leotard cut, but anyway.

:::

Image
ITEM: While I 100% loath this campaign Marvel has been doing where they photoshop the design onto the actor posing or waling around (not just Marvel, i see it by HBO too) … the shirt itself cracked me up.

That’s all for now. Cuddle thy chestbusters in peace…

Donald Glover has apparently joined Spider-Man: Homecoming, which is a nice touch, given his connection to the character in recent efforts. How great would it be if he WAS Miles Morales???

As pretty as she is, as good a cosplay it is in construction and design, here’s an example of where doing cosplay of a comic costume (or game costume in this case) highlights how awkward it looks in real life. The tenuous clipping of this dress thing just looks so awkward. Kind of like some of the attempts at Morrison era Emma Frost with the magic bustier.

JMS’ initially-solid and soon-hotmess series Rising Stars is apparently in development at MGM, because of course it is. I don’t even have a god image for this, because while I liked the story initially, I never liked the art or the designs….

That’s all, kids. Go practice Bespin AT-AT walking…

Everyone’s seen this already, but I am still working my way though it in little chunks each day. It’s brilliant.

Tom Hiddleston has been being cagey about those Bond rumors. You know the ones: about him being the front runner in negotiation to take on the character in the next slate of films. The ones where he’s competing against Idris Elba. The ones where other people are pushing for a female Bond, such as Emily Blunt or Gillian Anderson. The ones where his Night Watchman director is also hot and heavy for the director’s chair. But NOT the ones where I was tricked into believing they awarded the role to the pretty guy from Divergent.

I can’t help but see this as desperation, but the CW confirms Superman himself will appear next season on Supergirl, and not just an edge of frame cape lick. Which sounds like a SugarDVD search.

More theoretical detail on the theoretical reshoots of Rogue One:

Some crew initially heard J.J. Abrams was supervising the reshoots.
Gareth Edwards is doing the reshoots himself but with a partner, Christopher McQuarrie.
Christopher McQuarrie, the final writer on Rogue One, will be working extensively with Edwards on set to make sure they’re on the “same page” with the most recent draft of the film.
Christopher McQuarrie’s draft of Rogue One: A Star Wars Story was considered superior to the film they shot previously.
It was not Edwards’ fault as McQuarrie’s draft wasn’t completed when much of the film was shot and revisions kept coming in that made the film feel uneven.
32 sets have been re-created for the reshoot.
The crew expects they are reshooting 40% of the film.
They are working six days a week for eight weeks.
None of which is confirmed, and all of which is reasonable considering the film isn’t out for 6 months AND these films often have tweaks like this, particularly when they didn’t have a finished shooting script in the first place.

I suspect, personally, that it’s not about McQuarrie having to save Edwards’ ass… and he posted as much on Twitter, somewhat offended by the suggestion. I bet it’s more about tying some of the uneven elements together with a more finished script, and frankly,unfortunately, I DO buy that Disney would want more of that Barton Fink feeling, I mean that Star Wars adventure mood, rather than an urgent, gritty war movie. Wish they would diversify and allow for more variety in the franchise however, if this were so.

Love or hate Agents of SHIELD, they haven’t been afraid to take risks. This whole season involved a former teammember, who was proven to be a traitor and murderer (in the best Winter Soldier related anything outside of the movie itself) eventually killed on the surface of an alien planet but returned to earth, a corpse hosting a hive intelligence Inhuman comprised of microbeings. His very cells were his collective intelligence. Anyway, in the last few episodes of the season, they spent the money on showing what Hive, as they called him, looked like in his natural, or first form, millennia ago. It was basically Kraken (?) from the Secret Warriors comics from some years back. They really did him justice with the FX. Not far off from the technology and methods used for Davey Jones… but on a TV budget. Most impressive.

I’ll save my comments on X-Men: Apocalypse for Robot-Kraken and a review, but ONE thing I like about it is that it gave some fine artists like Warren Lau an opportunity to draw Olivia Munn. Why they waited for this as an excuse, I don’t know.

New set of Legos I saw this weekend at the Toyr-R-Us. I really dig how they constructed this crawler. Not $80 awesome or whatever it was, but cool…

Finally, really appreciating the work of Rafael Albuqurque lately. This is from Tokyo Ghost, with Rick Remender, which I aim to check out…

Off to record our Robot-Kraken Game of Thrones double feature…
