Have You Ever Danced With Shermin-Williams in the Pale Moonlight? – Robot’s Root 11 Feb 2018

I don’t know what to make of this Todd Phillips 80s Pre-Joker movie with Jaoquin Phoenix. I mean, I like when they experiment. But DCEU has such a low track record as far as experimenting with VISION. On the other hand, a film about that whole Vision Family in Suburbia book would be legendary. The image above, though, from a set of fan arts, really appeals to me… or peels… I love the flaking paint situation happening.

Meanwhile, these things:

  • When your director backs out of He-Man because they’re too busy with… Krypton… then you KNOW its serious.
  • Even deleted scenes are hilarious. Ragnarok still owns me.
  • This deleted scene from JL is actually pretty good, from a world-building standpoint. It shows a newly revived Kal-El wandering the halls of his old ship, and as he approaches, it automatically offers various resources for him, including the all-black supersuit and the Kryptonian battle armor… internally consistent-ish with Man of Steel. I appreciate that.
  • The winner of that huge 10-year Class Photo MCU situation is clearly Benedict Wong, because player brought a pocket watch on a vest chain.
  • More stuff showing consistency with the McQuarrie front end on the Falcon. Even if it is all part of the longer front end ‘docking module’ which works fine for me, I just don’t know what to make of images like this, below, where it’s longer but there’s a slot. Maybe the central spine is also a modular element than can be removed, separately from the longer vice clamp bits. Maybe, though, these other images are just earlier in the production design… or possibly fake. These days, who knows. This example below, which has been around for months, is the most mystifying. It looks too consistent to be a total fake, so I wonder if it was just earlier in the production. Because it deviates too much from what we’ve seen now. Wrong dish antenna, different front end, no blue and white paint… it does have the turret.

That’s enough for today. Back to rolling housepaint over my face to appear edgy.

Haileys and Bumblebees – Robots Root 3 Jan 2018

The only three things I can find to be positive about Bumblebee: The Damn Movie are, in no particular order:

  1. No Michael Bay
  2. Bumblebee is a Bug FFS
  3. Hailey Steinfeld

Maybe that WAS the right order.

Robot’s Root!

  • This comparison between Force Awakens and the Knights of the Old Republic storyline was pretty good. Had I any knowledge of the latter, maybe I would have detected some of this. Or not.
  • Every time Neil Blomkamp posts concept art from his axe-murdered Alien 5 treatment, I get frustrated.
  • I know this isn’t the most popular opinion, but I for one would want to see those extra hours of Blade Runner 2049… speaking of which, Ridley Scott’s elder man ego is spinning out… these comments are nuts.
  • This quote from Guillermo del Toro was amusing mostly because he criticized the design. I feel him.
  • Rian Johnson is supposedly set to begin filming scenes for the new trilogy in 2018… without a script, or even a stated concept… so at most, I hope it’s establishing shot set pieces… I mean, a road is nice. I like roads.
  • The most obvious conclusion reached from the linkbait comments that ‘Thor will undergo a dramatic transformation in Infinity Tole’ is a loss of an arm, as per the comics some years back… I’d like to see Thanos rip a Thor arm off…
  • new octopus alert. ALERT!
  • Hailey Steinfeld wants to be Joss Whedon’s Batgirl, if these misleading interview comments are to be believed. I would not mind. She’s fit, athletic, has a great expressive face, and has been acting since she was a wee one (remember True Grit? Long before the pop singer phase)… I had a different fantasy casting for this role, but maybe we’ll get to that sometime in 2018 on the podcast if a couple of other rubes get their shit together…
  • On the heels of the failed Dark Universe, Paramount is hurtling forward with the Hasbroverse, announcing dates for GI Joe, Micronauts and others… despite not having scripts or a plan. Sounds about right. Dungeons and Dragons AGAIN. Guh.
  • Here’s an interview with Neal Scanlan about creature work on TLJ… if you are into that sort of thing, which I am…
  • I still can’t even with this fever dream. It might be great. Mortal Engines…
  • I have an intense need to clean up and sort this mess… while eating THIS, of course.
  • Lung and I traded finds in this vein… this was my favorite of the Star Wars ones. Still looking for the perfect Deckard one.
  • Mark L Smith has been tasked as writer for Tarantino’s Star Trek film… I mean… someone rubbed a lamp somewhere right?
  • I enjoy radical fan theories where the main character is dead. Works with almost any movie.
  • Would Darkseid have helped or hurt Justice League? I think, as Kevin Smith described it, it would have made an effective tether for the next film.
  • Great honest trailer about Return of the Toleyou… except for the grating mispronunciation of Maori…
  • The new Annihilation trailer is already showing too much. I’m on blackout. But I can’t wait.
  • They do look pretty New Mutanty… love the Lockheed puppet…
  • Cloverfield 3 comes out in April… but with no name yet and no promos. Which is fine. They played it fast and loose with the last “sequel”… I’m still on board, ESPECIALLY if it is indeed space based as rumored. The cast alone!
  • True Detective S03 is shaping up to be pretty exciting to this guy: three time periods, the Ozarks, now Dorff joins Ali? Damn

That’s all for today. Back to cooking them Porgs…

Them Krakens be Robots – 24 April 2017

I was at the Monterey bay Aquarium with the kids last week, and was surprised to discover some Robot Kraken action!

Meanwhile…

I bring you: Robot’s Root, 24 April 2017

  • This one floored me. Three days later, I can’t wrap my head completely around it. Apparently, setting aside all the rounds of auditioning that landed Chris Pratt the role of Star-Lord.. the consistent second choice? Always Sunny’s Glenn Howerton. WHUT.
  • Shots from Defenders filming, at least so far, confirm DD is continuing with the muddy Ultimates style mostly black look. I keep hoping he’ll just suddenly show up in the same armor but the color of arterial spray.

  • Every time I look at the Thor: Ragnatole trailer, I’m reminded of that old Incredible Hulk telefilm series I loves as a kid. I was super into the cheesy, brown leather and fur Thor. So much so that in our Marvel RPG games I made him that way for science. But not cheesy. I mean, sort of cheesy. Lots of ‘I see thee NAY!’ business. But not four -color.

Also, that long gap in the couch? In the gladiator arena? It would fit precisely one lounging bronzed Jeff Goldblum. Meaning we need two, I guess.

  • I’ve always loved the concept of Xenomorph eggsacs being used as other things. I want to like this cookie jar, except I think it should have been something you actually unpeel, something softer. I don’t like the lid. Also, I don’t understand cookie jars.
  • The Batman and Bill documentary is finally arriving on Hulu. I’m really looking forward to it. Bill Finger has always been a trivia point, but I don’t know much about him.
  • Claire Temple won’t be in Punisher, breaking a tradition. Now, I love her and I like that she’s the narrative glue in these stories, but Iron Fist showed that when you have someone who knows all the other characters and DOESN’T call them for help, it becomes a distraction. I don’t hate this news.
  • This reminds me about recurring old amusing arguments with Lung about air travel: statistically, though more Red Shirts die on screen than other classes in ST, they represent a much smaller percentage of that class, meaning it is, as we’ve always said, much worse an idea to send those officers on the Away Team missions all the time.
  • Here’s the movie which will always be remembered as the project on which Jon Bernthals and Tom Holland worked on their respective Marvel audition tapes with each other.
  • I found this Samurai Iron Man online very late at night in my international travels going stir-crazy in my hotel, so I bought it. It hasn’t arrived, so common sense may prevail and I may return it like a reasonable person. But I MAY NOT.

Because M-16s – Robots Root 11 April 2017

Here’s Kurse using M-16s for no reason, straight out of Williamson’s Thor run… wow!

Listen, if this is a TEASER trailer, I don’t want to see any trailer trailers. I’m already sold on this film just on the pedigree of the director, the Thor roomate shorts, and the punchline in this above. And that’s saying something, as the Kirby-meets-80s-Galleria-Mall aesthetic is not my personal favorite.

Meanwhile, Robot’s Root:

  • Much knee-jerk hullabaloo has been made of Disney’s patent filings for a soft interactive robot. Westworld! They cry. However, this is basically an R/C airbag concept, so not only would I suggest we consider Baymax from Big Hero 6, which was the best thing ever, but in fact that’s the first intended application of this design: a Baymax toy. So. I’m on board!
  • Terminator is done. NO ITS NOT he says. It’s sleeping.
  • Lung teased me with the Robot Soldier toy coming out, and how, as tenuous landed gentry, we have no disposable income for such things. To hell with that, I’ve seen heist films (and none of their endings) what could go wrong.
  • According to two reference links I cannot access in Indonesia, apparently Captain Marvel will be the ‘most powerful character in the MCU’ which I certainly hope is hyperbole. I mean, I’m hot to see Brie Larson kick ass as much as the next nerd, but let’s settle down.
  • I haven’t been following ANY content-related stuff related to GitS, though I’ve certainly read about the disastrous box office, and the general criticisms. I reserve judgment for when Lung and I see it later this month. In the meantime: hilarious rework of the trailer mixed with review blips (the BAD ones)…
  • King Conan appears to be DOA. I’m disappointed. It was the best, most rational use of older Schwartzenegger (sp) in any of these films he’s doing. Aged, broken down Conan. COME ON. It would have been awesome. Oh well oh well oh well.
  • Listen, I may be the only long-time follower of the Weekly Planet podcast, but I mentioned earlier that Mr. Sunday Movies (James Clement) finally revealed himself as part of the Movember fundraiser/ podcasting network lunch event a few weeks ago. The video is up now, in addition to the early photos. The 360 camera footage is pretty amazing, BTW. I need to look into these devices. I’ve never seen a pan-style wide angle video shot and released on youtube before. It’s worth checking out for that if nothing else. I knew all that VRML work I did in 1996 would pay off… sort of…
  • Josh Boone’s New Mutants film has entered pre-production. Anyone over 40 will probably be thrilled.

Let me tole you: if I didn’t have kids in the home, and DID have $899 laying around…
link!

Meanwhile:

– As much as I crave new Hans Zimmer soundtracks, this interview, reposted across various sites, warmed my heart a bit, because I share a devotion to the Nolan Batman films as well. It’s a very intimate and purposeful connection, the soundtrack developed for that trilogy and the material itself. Nolan and Zimmer work well together, thematically (witness Inception and Interstellar for examples outside of the superhero genre) and when Zimmer did the Man of Steel soundtrack, while it was excellent and distinct, it was lending some of that former world’s pedigree to the new films in a way I found disconnected. link!

– Sony wants to proceed with fast-tracking Venom, without a script or director… in the post-Marvel-deal era, what do YOU want from a Venom film? I can’t decide. I really don’t like the character outside of Spidey using the suit and then slowly going batty from the symbiote’s influence. Once it jumped to other hosts and became 90seriffic, I was out. I do like the black ops version from recent years in the comics, but I don’t see how it would translate. link!

– Similarly, WB / DC seem intent on keeping the Flash moving forward (heh) despite multiple issues with the pre-production. That’s not a good sign. link!

– RIP Bernie Wrightson. That escalated fast.
Not my artistic influence, and I didn’t read a lot of his stuff, but I always admired it from a technical level and enjoyed reading about his convention persona. link!

– We’re doomed. More. link! Mega-rich oligarches in powered armor!

-I’m trying not to read anything about GOG2 these days… but I can’t get enough on Yondu’s cyber mohawk. link!

Image
– Expanse has been greenlit for Season 3, so I can now relax.
link!

– Alicia Vikander may be joining a new Ben Wheatley project involving kicking nocturnal underground beastie ass. His current project looks insane and awesome, so let’s be optimistic.
link!

Image
– Becky Cloonan’s poster for Ghost in the Shell is EVERYTHING. link!

– Reddit is questionable for a lot of things. But the AMA (Ask Me Anything) series is not one of them. Here’s Gareth Edwards… link!

Image
Your random Mike Mignola block-rockin art used as a bossbot’s iphone screen for today.

– I’m generally not a fan of cosplayers photographed and then given a bunch of post FX. I like the craft of the costuming itself, and that’s as far as I go. However, this is really well done. link!

– Apparently Hela knows capoeira in the new Thor film. I appreciate it’s a gladiator road trip movie, but that’s quite a diversion from the comics. Then again, probably a welcome one. Stand around and glower megagod types are boring on film. link!

– Good news for this guy, having just finished Peaky Blinders S03… S04 is due to begin production, and Tom Hardy will return. link!

– So Fox’s X-Men show for broadcast TV? The one with a family on the run with a mutant child, which seems to have little to know recognizable X-anything in it except for Sentinels? Is it going to be called Mutants on the Run? MutantsSuxxxx? Mutant? Nope. GIFTED. Srsly. I was gifted. I had to do more homework. That is all. link!

Image
Here’s your random Black Adam speculative rendering for today, by Chris Diem. Love it. Great proof of concept…

– Henry Cavill is on board for MI: 6. That’s interesting! I hope he’s a villain. Not a team member who betrays them, but a proper villain. link!

– How strange the wheel is… Matt Vaughn gave the X-Men franchise a brief moment of hope, before getting forced out by Bryan Singer. Now, after doing his own thing (Kick Ass, Kingsmen) he’s back in the big studio system’s favor for supehero tentpoles, being supposedly courted for the next Superman film. If true, that’s something to be modestly optimistic about, similar to what happened with batman. link!

Pour Your First Sip Out for Those Bothans Day – 160504

I like today because my feed is filled with Star Wars business instead of religious/political/targeted ads/etc etc etc. Except for a few dickheads who added SW imagery TO those other contents.

In other news…

Image
The saddest thing… perhaps the only sad thing, other than the tragedy of ‘so were we!’ bro-heartbreak… about Civil War will surely be that they didn’t retain Scarjo/Natasha’s look from Winter Soldier, which was my favorite. Like need a cold shower favorite.

Agent Carter is looking grim for S03. Low ratings, largely due to them delaying it on the schedule for so long, combined with greenlighting the Most Wanted spinoff of SHIELD made it seem like threes a crowd, sounds like. Which sucks, because, you know, we have such a surplus of complex, empowered female leads AND period adventure stories.

This will be near and dear to Kris aka Deeplydapper’s heart, but a brief sampling of awesome fantasy movies… not action fantasy like Lord of the Toles, but rather old school fairytale fantasy. And, while I love Princess Bride and continue to be unable to parse Labyrinth, I was surprised to read about Stardust… with Matthew Vaughn over Neil Gaiman featuring Claire Danes and MOTHERFUCKING DAREDEVIL… so yeah, guess I’m watching that!

They recently added a new feature to BB-8 that is basically a watch with me mode… it interacts with and reacts to Force Awakens when you watch it together. I figured that would be amusing for like 10s, but it occurred to me my kids might love it. So I plan on giving it a go during our viewing party.

I like the premise of this one.

The story focuses on a group of eccentric international assassins who become fed up with Gunther, the world’s greatest hitman who also happens to be an arrogant show-off, and decide to kill him. Their master plan, however, quickly turns into a series of embarrassing encounters as Gunther always appears one step ahead.

Plus, for those keeping track at home, this cast!

Cobie Smulders (The Avengers), Bobby Moynihan (SNL), Paul Brittain (Hotel Transylvania 2), Kumail Nanjiani (Silicon Valley), Randall Park (The Interview), and Ryan Gaul (Identity Thief).

And that’s including Schwartzenegger scenery chewing…

Thinking a lot about a comment I read online the other night, in the comments on an io9 article about SWVIII stuff, where people were going on and on about how Disney should dump the Prequels from continuity… someone pointed out that SW isn’t exclusively for 40 year olds. There are now two generations of kids who grew up with Prequels not only being canon, but being THE THING HAPPENING at the time. And it made me think, there’s a new generation, my kids, maybe, who as they age may be focused on the new Disney films and even look down on the original trilogy (admittedly, warts and all)… though I’ve done my duty in showing them all the films. Anyway, this was a good opinion piece video on nostalgia and hype in the SW world.

Lastly, on last week’s Robot-Kraken Podcast, I challenged Deeplydapper to name a comic project that, by changing one member of the creative team, would have turned it from a hot mess into something he’d love. For mine, I chose artist Olivier Coipel to do the Iron Man run from the #170s-#199 or so, leading into #200. This was an incredibly influential period of Iron Man continuity, thanks to Denny O’Neil and co. Stark’s descent into alcoholism, his loss of the company to Stane, Rhodey in the armor, Stark rebuilding his old gray suit… leading up to the final confrontation with Stane, in the classic Silver Centurion vs. Iron Monger battle. The art on those final issues was good, but I never could get down with Luke McDonnel’s work on the majority of the issues in this period. It was influential in leading me to draw so much Iron Man myself (badly)… it’s just my opinion, my preference… anyway, here’s an example of how awesome Coipel’s Iron Man (and Stark) can be. Granted this is fairly contemporary stylistically, with inks, colors, etc to match. But you get the idea. The full scene (from Thor #3 in the original CW days) is below.

ITEM: So, I’ve watched parts of this hot mess like three times in the last few days, mostly in the process of trying to rickroll friends into watching it. Which doesn’t mean you shouldn’t watch it. You totally should. Otherwise, you’d miss Boba Fett doing a jaunty dance, Padme and her dear daddy Vader doing sexytime dances, and a writhing Slave Leia doing moves I]m surprised Disney authorized. This apparently came from one of the Disney parks. It’s so surreal seeing dancers doing a medley of pop dances in familiar SW costumes… it feels so weird and wrong. I’ve seen those old ones with Vader and Stormtroopers poplocking or whatever, but this one went way beyond. So weird.

The best part of the whole thing? The autotranslation of the blurb that accompanied the post:

ITEM: I have to say, and say, and say: why can’t we just have 95 minutes (not too many) of raging Batman raging hard against Superman. That’s all I want out of this movie. I LOVE how he PUNCtuates his STATEments with EMPHasis. Bad ass! Go Batfleck!

Speaking of, I just saw on thefacebooks that someone screencapped a clip from the Batman Maybe Dream Sequence with Maybe Parademons that appears to show Darkseid’s omega symbol in the earthworks in the background. Assuming this wasn’t photochopped. I don’t remember this scene…

Update: better image:

Also, new trailer is out with very little new content, favorably frankly, but what I thought was most amusing was that the first three times I tried to see it, it had been removed thanks to a copyright claim by Turkish Airlines. I wonder if this is an example of those copyright bots going nuts, even when it was legitimate use.

Oh, and by the way, supposedly WW is 5000 years old, and in ‘retirement’ due to being overwhelmed by man’s brutaility… which is an odd story point. It puts quite a different spin on the events of the WW solo film (that can’t be her first foray into the world during WWI then… this makes no sense)… but hey, Snyder, whatever.

ITEM: Another movie I had no interest in, and MAYYYYBE has elevated to Blu-Ray viewing status if nothing else: WoW. I love Duncan Jones, but I have soooo much fantasy movie fatigue. I didn’t even try and watch the Hobbits. But I DO like that we have a human/orc buddy cop situation happening here. Who will be the love interest they playfully compete over in between extended CGI violence encounters? Another species? I vote Drow. Do they have Drow in WoW?

Also, it’s all but confirmed that Hela will be the big bad in Ragnarok, which works for me.
