The Sun is Getting Low in the Sky Big Guy HEY WAIT – Robots Root 10 Jan 2018

Robot’s Root for 10 January 2018 – a roundup of stuff and things that may or may not be happening…

  • Adding Matt the Radar Tech into SW: Battlefront II is the best anything ever for today. I’m sold.
  • Apparently, if you want to avoid some legal difficulty, owning firearms with the Punisher logo on them is a bad idea. Especially pink ones… I guess. What about swords? What are the rules on Punisher logos?
  • Black Lightning isn’t a character I’m overly familiar with, but the fact that the live action show has been launched is a good thing, I think. Now, Thunder, his daughter, has a design element I really appreciate: a TRDL design style high collar! Ha! Stoked.
  • More trailer action for the new Black Widow film, Red Sparrow… WAIT. The poster, up top, I quite like, with the focus on the eye.
  • DeWanda Wise has joined the stellar cast of Captain Marvel. No word on the character, though wouldn’t it be interesting if there’s a Binary component to this script? Anyway, she’s rad as hell, so that’s a thing.
  • How is it that the Workaholics guys can just make whatever film they want at this point? It’s like a tighter band version of the Rogen gang.
  • Listen, I had high hopes for Robin Hood… but it’s starting to give me a Ladyhawke vibe. I mean, I had low hopes. But now I have lower hopes.
  • EVERYTHING about this film.
  • Gifted, which I have not started, has been granted a second season… and has lost the Singer factor, obviously. As has Legion.
  • Ever wanted to play a Bugbear? Now you can.
  • Love Game of Thrones and frostbite? GOOD NEWS.
  • Runaways has been renewed for S02 on Hulu, despite not having finished S01. I feel like it fell apart towards the back half, but it’s still serviceable. Not that this can be said for that abysmal looking Inhumans series. Guh.
  • Here’s a great interview with Mike Mignola on an array of subjects.
  • Collider claims Tim Miller is developing a Kitty Pryde film. I’m OK with it. Supposedly Drew Goddard’s X-Force film is scheduled to begin production soon as well.
  • Han Solo mayyyyyyy have just gone back in for 3 more weeks of reshoots… pretty late in the game. Ron Howard knows what he’s doing, so no panic. Other than the general anxiety about this film existing in the first place, I guess…
  • This one took me by surprise: Derrickson of Doctor Strange may be cooking a live-action adaptation of one of my favorite cyberpunk books of the 80s, Effinger’s ‘When Gravity Fails’, which is set in a futureshock Middle East. INTERESTING.
  • who doesn’t love fake amusement parks?
  • Mantic is preparing a Hellboy tabletop game! Stay tuned for Deeplydapper’s slavish review of said game in a year…
  • Finally, The Tick is returning, meaning I need to catch up in a hurry…

That’s it for today! Kris and I are both smashing atoms to get ready for Heroes and Villains Fanfest/ Walker Stalker Con this weekend in Portland. Come see us at tables 201-202 if you attend!

Blacked Out Black Out – Robots Root 27 Sept 2017

Infuriating! The third and final prequel to the sequel Blade Runner 2049 is out, from an extremely accomplished anime pedigree, but stuck behind the crunchyroll firewall. I’m already being strong-armed into paying for CBS All Access for the Star Treks, so I’m not giving CR any money for this. Outrage! I mean, it isn’t… but it is. Right? Right. Here, for those that have a subscription to that site.

Meanwhile, Robots Root!

  • Annhilation looks A M A Z I N G…. everything I want in a film: mystery, tension, minor key urgent soundtrack, aliens, horror, Natalie Portman. I’m so in. And I lurrrrved Alex Garland’s previous, Ex Machina, so.
  • Unsettling politics in the continuing cultural war against tattoos in Japan (or re-war, I guess)…
  • James Cameron and Tim Miller seem to think they invented the concept of a Terminator’s skin aging… can’t explain the shrunken spine and saggy muscles though ey! EY! Still… and also, what’s with that old saw about body odor and bad breath? I get the former… but where would halitosis be happening on a Terminator? Oh, there I go thinking again. Next film: 2019. Better get crackin! Not getting any younger, the lot of em.
  • I’ve seen two or three of the character posters for Pacific Rim 2, and while I don’t like how humanoid the mecha became, I DO like the graphic design on these posters. A lot.
  • So, fresh off of being booted from Han Solo, Lord and Miller are now developing a film adaptation from the writer of Martian, about a heist on the Moon. Because cyberpunk! I’m in.
  • First look at the female Ghost in Ant-Man and Wasp. Looking ghostly! And female.
  • I’ve yet to comment on ST: Discovery, but I did watch it. My favorite thing so far has been the diversity in design and affect on the new Klingons. Here’s a peek behind the curtain from Face Off’s Glen Hetrick’s production house.
  • Hayley Atwell doing mocap for Avengers 4 perhaps? I’m saying, time travel fuckery!
  • And finally, Lego Grand Theft Auto. You’re welcome!

Thats all for today! Who’s ready for inktober? THIS GUY! Hope to see some sweet art from the rest of you next month, on IG or FB or the like!

I’ve Seen R Rated Material Glitter in the Dark Near the Tannhäuser Gate – Robots Root 11 august 2017

Best news of the day: Blade Runner 2049 has been given an R-Rating. I cannot be more pleased by ratings news related news about Blade Runner. As far as news goes. About ratings.

also…

Episode 035 of the Robot-Kraken Podcast is up: Thom and guest-host Blake ‘Ballista’ Simmons discuss Game of Toles S07 eps 03 and 04…while Kris attempts to evade dragonfire at home. Check it out on itunes, Stitcher, and here.

Meanwhile, Robot’s Root!

  • Avengers 4 has started production. Some say this will be Infinity War Part 2 despite their dodge about it being a two-part film… I hold out hope that it’s a variant on Secret Invasion. We shall see.
  • The word on the street, and by word on the street I mean news in my browser, is that No Man’s Sky is getting an update that offers story mode and some limited multiplayer. Maybe I’ll break the seal on my copy now. With all my free time. COPIOUS free time.
  • Three new characters from the Star Wars universe have been revealed, devoid of context, as part of a media release about a Captain Phasma novel. Marvel at them! Speculate! Be vaguely disappointed later!
  • What standard nerd among us wouldn’t want to fold in sounds from TRAPPIST-1 into their own music mixes? I used to capture source recording samples for electronic artists to use in their ambient works (or ambient chainsaw, as my lovely wife declares) but I never graduated to making my own.
  • Lemmy has been (further) immortalized.
  • I LOVE them Praetor guards in Last Jedi. There’s some really interesting design work going on here, beyond the obvious historical callbacks.
  • Tim Miller has signed on to direct Neuromancer, in 2032… or something… I mean, it’s a way off… probably doomed… but it COULD happen.
  • Jonathan Hickman was particularly candid about Marvel canceling Fantastic Four on the heels of their dispute with Fox over the film franchise butchery. I don’t blame him. He’s made a career out of some of the best modern FF stories ever, and I really loved what he was doing. But it’s kind of a peak into the sausage factory.
  • Kind of a cool bonus scene about Zune management.
  • Listen, I LOVED Jeff Bridges as Stane… but I’m glad they weren’t ambiguous about his bitter end.
  • Inhumans has inevitably become THE project to hate this year… read this regarding the garbage fire panel about the show. It’s highway crash level interesting.
  • The screen tests for RDJR’s early Tony Stark interpretations are, yes, insufferable, but also interesting in that this is how I feel the character would have presented if played by Tom Cruise, as once intended.

That’s all for today. Keep ordering those noodles and watch out for skinjobs!

Bonus Pitch:

If you want more standard nerd news and reviews, check out Friends of R-K, Second Union at their main site, or on Facebook, or on Twitter! Good stuff. In fact, recently Thom of Third Rail Design Lab / Robot-Kraken (self promotion alert) was featured in the Second Union Heroes and Villains Fanfest/Walker Stalker Portland review

So, what do you think? Tim Miller on Terminator? Any chance of bailing this ship out? We talk about this one on the podcast in February… link!

Meanwhile, this:

– Look, I gave up on Gotham a long time ago. It was never great, but at least had some atmospheric style. It went from soapy cheese to a garbage fire in record time. That said, I will give them this and only this: I’ve been pining for someone to do the Joker thing from the New 52 where his face has been cut off and then haphazardly sewn back on. It’s so unnervingly icky (and infected, presumably)… so, at least they tried it. link!

– From now on, as far as cosplay goes, I will accept NO LESS than a full scale ED-209. link!

– Thomas Jane in Predator? Before seeing Expanse I’d have been against it. Now… link!

– Neill Blomkamp is not encouraging. link!

– I’ve been using these as desktop screens of late: focus on the retro-future GUI in Rogue One: link!

– GIJoe + Transformers… would you have been in? I would not have been in. I would have been more out than I already am. link!

– So, uh, according to this, DC/WB will give the obscure antihero villain of their obscure supers film his OWN film… yet still can’t figure out how to make the DC pantheon work? link!

– I liked the admittedly uneven Amazon Tick pilot… interesting to imagine Warburton back in the costume, though. link!

DOCTOR STRANGER THINGS.

Meanwhile:

Image
ITEM: Westworld has been renewed for S02, thankfully. The show is mesmerizing.
via

:::

Image
ITEM: No offense to Gavin O’Conner, but this interview sounds like some sort of parody.
via

:::

Image
ITEM: News flash: Ryan Reynolds has nice things to say about Tim Miller. Because, you know, he’s not stupid.
via

:::

Image
ITEM: Below, an article briefly (butchering, in this post-millennial half-assed documentary style, where the narrator inserts themselves into the thing every 3 seconds) discussing the inventor of Lazer Tag. Above, MY LAZER TAG set, just found this week while going through my mother’s attic. Synchronicity!

That is all. Back to your radioactive sheds. Those reactors aren’t going to build themselves.

Shes a Good Secretary – 3 November 2016

Image
ITEM: This new trailer is really good. It lays out the structure of the film and the nature of the Amazonians and their relationship, at least somewhat, to the outside world, and established WW’s conflict with both the world and her own people. Also more amazing up and over leg kicks and knee scrapers and sword swipeys and that great bullet deflection in the alley and Pam doing her kung fu and…Image
well, of course, for me the highlight was this shot of the villain. SYMBOLISM!
via

Meanwhile…

Image
ITEM: I think it’s positively criminal that it’s taken this long for Talia Al Ghul to appear in some sort of live action continuity. I’m not discounting Marion Cotillard’s Miranda… that was a great element to the story, but I mean the Talia from the comics, a trained fighter, eventual mother of Damian Wayne…
via

:::

Image
ITEM: I sure like the idea that we can go for smaller films after Infinity Tole. I don’t know that that’s exactly what he means, but I do believe the group films can stand to not be global extinction events every time.
via

:::

Image
ITEM: Christian reviewer warns Doctor Strange is, like Dungeons & Dragons, a gateway to satanism. I love it. IM THERE! Monday night in fact.
via

:::

Image
ITEM: I don’t know the book series, but I liked some of what I saw. Supposedly it’s just a delay based on the post-production schedule, but hopefully that’s ALL it is.
via

:::

Image
ITEM: I’m pre-sold, but still!
via

:::

Image
ITEM: Lung turned me onto this one. Simply brilliant. Haw did it take this long?? Reminds me of my old Nixon watch. But rad.
via

:::

Image
ITEM: Titanfall 2 is another game I bought on concept alone, even though I don’t have time to play generally. I haven’t unwrapped it. But they added single player story mode to mech combat both in and out of the mech, AND it’s now on PS4 so I had to. This concept art spread is delightful.
via

:::

Image
ITEM: I may or may not have shuttered the bike news for TLTC these days, but check this out:
via

:::

Image
ITEM: This.
Predator…”plunks the deadly alien hunter, who audiences have seen fight in jungles, concrete jungles, frozen wastelands and alien planets, in the harsh environment of … suburbia.”
Also, as if the film needed the extra juice, Olivia Munn was cast as a ‘scientist’. That’s why I show her in glasses, you see.
via

Image
Also, speaking of the MUNN EFFECT, I was also pre-sold on Office Party, as we talked about when the first trailer came out, but since I laugh EVERY TIME Vance plummets to his probable death, I take it that’s a good sign that ALL THE REST OF THE AWESOME is good. Yet, the best part is once again Kate McKinnon.
via

:::

Image
ITEM: David Leitch is a rumored replacement for Tim Miller on Deadpool. I love John Wick. It’s interesting though, that it’s equally hard to envision his style applied to Deadpool farce as it was Tim Miller going ‘stylized’ and abandoning the fun parts. Dunno. This article Lung sent me, about Junkie XL leaving the project in solidarity, which I can respect if nothing else.
via

:::

Image
ITEM: Lastly, I love the concept of an FPS maker FINALLY having the cojones to put a no-respawn mode into one of these games. THAT’s a challenge.
via

Less Chimichangas for Tim Miller – 24 October 2016

Image
This one I initially discounted as rumor, but apparently the fallout stems from, aside from a general power struggle, the fact that Tim Miller wanted to do a stylized sequel, and Reynolds wanted to stick with the 4th wall lunacy of the first film.
via

In other news…

Image
ITEM: Very sad news this weekend: Steve Dillon passed away at age 54. Quite a shock. Makes me a bit nostalgic, and sad for his family certainly. TICKETS WAITING TO BE PUNCHED ABOVE US ALL, friends.
via

:::

Image
ITEM: Season 2 of Jessica Jones will include all female directors as a mandate. As a rule, I think that’s pretty awesome.
via

:::

Image
ITEM: So many things over the weekend! This was announced officially later Friday afternoon, ending months of speculation and years of fantasy casting. People were talking about Glover as a young Han even before there was a Han Solo movie.
via

:::

Image
ITEM: I tend to ignore ‘science’ features that include a soundtrack and snippets of interviews with a single source. But I thought the ‘microburst’ concept was interesting, if nothing else. Weather pRn!
via

:::

Image
ITEM: This rad Lego nod to Rogue One is pretty layered in its coolness. It’s a great relief sculpture of K-2SO as it is, but then they framed it like an illustration and built Lego MARKERS. That’s nuts. I love it.

Image
And finally, I made another Lego mech… this time at the lego store in my neighborhood. You can rent time with their bins so I take my son there while my daughter is in ballet sometimes. Concepting/Search/Assembly time, about 35 minutes.

Bat Vehicle Appreciation and other things 17 Feb 2016

Image
Still thinking about the latest Batman Movie Masquerading as a Superman Movie… I really like the Bat vehicles. I mean, they can’t hold a candle to the Nolanverse stuff, but for this world and what he’s doing with it, I’m digging it. The diving board action of the Bat plane… and the way these gull wing doors swoop open and give that familiar bat motif… but with cannons…

Anyway, other things happened:

1. Tim Miller moments mount: With all the Deadpool heat, a lot of film fans are seeing Miller like an unknown that came out of nowhere. I was aware of his FX background but didn’t have much of a sense of what he had done. Today, we’ve got some cool stuff floating around that broadens that background a bit.

Image
Remember this? The 6 minute mini-movie introducing the DC Universe game? I loved it so much when it came out, and rewatching it today, I’m very focused on how he uses scale and handicam style focus to make you feel like you are part of the action (especially with the giant)…
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1Pg5moqGr04

Image
And speaking of those same tricks (including a giant) here’s a series of three animated shorts commissioned by Marvel prior to launching the MCU Phase 1, as a means of increasing awareness about Iron Man as a character. Too much! Love it… and how trippy is it that it seems to foreshadow a lot of the first Avengers film?

2. Here’s the first proper pic from Guardians of the Galaxy 2… or promo image… or what have you. Stoked to see lil’ Groot there. And Saldana’s wicked cyberheels…

Image
3. I remain optimistic about the new Ghostbusters… but Mayhem looks…OK (we saw him in the Lego stuff last week)… but Rowan? I mean…

:::

Image
4. Lung sent me this amazing short, Cthupid, by Giovanni Braggio. I’ve watched it thrice. The only thing better than her taking photos is the sound FX in general…

5. Look, if money weren’t an issue, I’d happily drop cash for an electric resto of an old air-cooled Type II…

6. Read about this one right before we started recording last night, and we talked about it briefly…
it’s a very future is now moment. I’m not sure if pop culture ate itself or whatever, but I’m fascinated.
