They’ll Use Your Bones for Tools – 31 October 2018

In honor of Halloween, here’s a link to the original War of the Worlds broadcast, not to be confused with the two later rebroadcasts within the next 15 years, or any War of the Worlds film or TV projects since. Though, because I am a defender of the movie, I’m using a Tom Cruise War of the Worlds header image because damn, they looked rad. And sounded radder. The rising of the inexplicably buried walker out of a New Jersey intersection is still one of my favorite filmed sequences in the modern era.

Meanwhile, within your treat pail, find these thus:

  • In a somewhat surprise reveal, the Game of Thrones prequel will include and likely feature Naomi Watts. Nice catch!
  • In an optimistic bit of rumor, apparently maybe supposedly Marvel is cooking up a Falcon/Bucky miniseries for the streaming service. That’s a hot one. Their dynamic in Winter Soldier was excellent. Now, allow me to opine: I may be just pushing my own wish fulfillment here, but I suspect Bucky will take the Cap mantle, and this show might be used to bridge or flesh out that transition. Meanwhile, Vision might have a major role in the Scarlett Witch series. I mean, he SHOULD. And meanwhile meanwhile, the rumored Hawkeye project might be a series and include Clint training Kate Bishop. If it followed the story beats and tonal style of the early comic issues, that would lead to one very welcome thing: live action PLESS PLESS!
  • In Mediocre Cosplay News, here’s more pics of the awkward Doom Patrol people with the awkward Titans people. How bad does this project need to be when the promo material is this amateur? I’m weirded out. And, related: here’s Henry Cavill’s costume/makeup tests for Witcher, in which he looks like he wore the black Superman suit we never got to see, but added a Halloween Store wig, and then tried to use the SMOLDER ability from Jumanji.
  • I can’t recall any project like this before: the PG-13 version of Deadpool 2 is to include not ONLY that surreal Princess Bride intro, but a sizable amount of different footage and story beats. It’s like multiversal and stuff.
  • I enjoyed reading this fan theory about Nick Fury knowing the future and setting things up based on Dr. Strange going back in time and warning him, though reading this rambling treatise (sort of an Emporer’s Shanghai Noodles of MCU theories) it’s easy to see how if they weren’t VERY careful we’d have another well-fucked time paradox problem.
  • I keep forgetting to post this youtube video on building Daredevil’s billyclubs… I think Lung found it initially… the thing is, it reminds me that on the show I feel like it’s always been standalone clubs, not connected by wire? Am I misremembering? Because I LOVE when they are connected. Though not when Jimmy Palmiotti draws it and the wire is 333′ of silly string. Editorial over.

Finally, I leave you with this: Bram Stoker’s original defacement of his library source material when writing Dracula. How awesome.

His Red Right Hand – 8 October 2018

Well, it sure looks like Hellboy to me. Word on the street, ie. NYCC, is that it’s gooooood stuff.

Meanwhile, in space:

  • The teaser for The Boys looks SPOT ON. And I’m really warming to Jack Quaid in lieu of Simon Pegg, though it’s great the latter will step in to play the father of the former.
  • Not sure what to make of Venom’s strong opening weekend. We’ll see what second weekend and international releases look like, because that’s where the morbid curiosity viewers fall away and lack of repeat business and demographic penetration kills these films. Still, stronger than I would have expected.
  • Not even Minka Kelly can save that terrible Dove costume design. It’s comics-canon, sure, but those goggles never made any sense. Still, I mean, for DC fans… who would have thought they’d have Hawk and Dove live action?
  • I don’t know, other than a post Avengers 4 multiverse/time retcon situation, how they’d make Dark Avengers work, but you know I’d be first in line. I loved that series.
  • From the trailers-I-didn’t-watch department, another Daredevil one, this time teasing Bullseye.
  • Good Omens looks fantastic. Very nice casting and good chemistry. I never read the Neil Gaiman series, but I’m into it.
  • Nightflyers continues to interest me.
  • A reminder that Deadly Class is still coming in January. Yes please.
  • Here’s a fanart of a possible look for Black Canary in the Birds of Prey series. I have to tell you, my Black Canary pieces do well at conventions. I think it’s the fishnets.
  • An Expanse S04 teaser for you. YESYESYESYESYESYES

And finally, for a very specific kind of porno: Tom Hardy feeding shelter dogs sausages.

No Good To Us Dead – Robots Root 4 Oct 2018

My favorite news of the moment is the confirmation that Jon Favreau’s SW TV series will be called The Mandalorian, and have a lone gunslinger vibe. I’ve only scratched the surface of Mandalore in the Clone Wars series thus far, but I’ll be interested to see if it’s another species wearing Mandalorian armor, as with the Fetts, or if it’s a true Mandalorian, who eppear to have a pretty interesting story of their own. Either way, exploring the Outer Reach, shooting to kill, best helmet design in the series, I’m on board…bonus: Pedro Pascal in the live action SW series? YES PLS

Meanwhile, this may be happening RIGHT now:

  • I haven’t watched this, being in back to back meetings all day, but I’m optimistic. Ferrell’s haircut alone! DAPPER. Update: Welp, yep, I AM THE TARGET MARKET.
  • Despite my doubts, they just sold me on the Kingsman prequel. I mean, I didn’t have doubts about it being a prequel… or even about the speculative film’s value… I just figured that Millar was spouting without anything to back it up, given that Kingsman 2 didn’t do very well. But I like the concept of the series and I’m on board. But whoa: Ralph Fiennes?!? Yes please.
  • Want some candy? Yes, of course they do.
  • Bad Birds of Prey news, following on the heels, so to speak, of very good news earlier this week… Rosie Perez appears to have been cast as the Question. Why for the love of R’yleh… I held out this morning for awhile hoping it was a hoax.
  • I don’t know why they keep referring to the uniforms in Dark Phoenix as ‘classic’… I mean, I guess compared to others in the franchise they are, but these are Frank Quitely’s excellent designs from New X-Men thanks. Love it!
  • I don’t need a lot of Luke in my Star Wars IX, but I do dig the concept of a flashback showing him pulling Star Destroyers into orbit. What a great image. Well, THROUGH orbit.
  • Here’s a trailer for Runaways S02. I’m stoked!
  • Hey look: at least Venom is compared (fairly) favorably to Catwoman. But look, here’s a reasonably, contextually, positive review about what’s in the tin.
  • Entourage played the Aquaman movie concept as a riff on big budget supers films with no artistic merit, ie. the ultimate low-brow sellout move with devastating financial and professional risk. But as this look back shows, it mirrored the future reality pretty accurately.
  • Though it’s pretty likely Amazon will pull it once they figure it out, they are allowing Verhooven’s original X-rated cut of Robocop to stream on Prime right now. I need to get on that myself!
  • Disney just greenlit a Lilo and Stitch live action adaptation. I’m on board: great 3d alien and a more powerful non-traditional body image situation for young girls than the more famous Moana. Excellent!
  • This is a cool Millennium Falcom triptych, but I’d like it more if there was NO there there between them. Imply it, don’t show it!
  • Surprisingly, at least one review claims there’s MORE there there to the Titans series, in a way that JUST might be interesting enough to try out. Despite that Starfire.

Thats all for today. We are recording another episode of Robot-Kraken tonight, so if you feel a tingling, happy sensation, it’s probably your collective awareness of our enthusiasms. All hail the TRDL hive mind!

Tears of a Robot-Kraken – Robots Root 21 September

So, the makeup test for Phoenix’s Joker is drawing from Pagliacci, not entirely unexpectedly. However, I’m still pretty disappointed. You have two major iconic looks to navigate that came before: the classic Joker look, and the smeared, hot mess Heath Ledger look. My hope was that he would start with this incredibly well meaning, intricate, finely done makeup, playing up his delusions of grandeur, and then as things go south, he never reapplies it so it gets messier and messier as he is deconstructed and descends into madness. Like, mime-level neatness in the makeup. The classic contemporary pagliacci look is what he’s sort of doing here, with the one tear (the crying clown, etc etc) but I would have preferred the much more vintage look, thus:

Anyway, onward with the stuff:

  • The TNG cast sounds disgruntled, and why wouldn’t they be, really.
  • One of the things I like most about Michael B. Jordan being cast as John Clark in this latest round of Clancy films is that it’s just one more pin to deflate the knee-jerk racist and ‘continuity purist’ arguments against casting people of color in roles that were originally written as white characters.
  • I thought i’d be annoyed by all the Catholic iconography in the new Daredevil series, but the fact that they’re going dark and corrupted makes for great imagery. Bloody christ poses and graves and such. Black costume! Run from the light!
  • All-female Marvel supers stuff: great! For TV: not so great.
  • We talk about this on a recent podcast session for the October release, but the fact that Danny Boyle walked from Bond 25 but they hired Cary Fukunaga to replace him is kind of a head-scratcher, as the latter has as much of a reputation for ditching projects as the former. However, I’m on record as being much more interested, given how much I loved True Detective S01.
  • That Disney would start reining in the SW franchise isn’t surprising, after Solo. But it’s also disappointing. I argue the problem isn’t too much of the Star War, but rather not enough focus on what makes a good Star War. My favorite of the lot is Rogue One, and many hated it. There’s no pleasing everyone. I also liked Solo fine. But anyway.
  • The only thing better than a cephalopod is a grab-assy one.
  • No interest in Titans, but it’s good to see they aren’t planning on dancing around the existence of Batman.
  • Feige taking over the FF and X-Men franchises is not surprising, and I like it. Scarlet Witch and Loki solo TV series? With the film casting? I’m incredulous on that story.

That’s all for today… if you haven’t already, check out our most recent episode of Robot-Kraken, and try not to get yourself deported or entangled in the South China Sea. Cheers!

Mount the Curb To Scale – Robots Root 14 September 2018

I HAVE SO MANY DESIRES FOR THIS R/C TUMBLER I CANT EVEN. Only second to my desires for a fully functional 1:1 scale version. HA.

Meanwhile, for science:

  • I remain on the fence regarding all this Henry Cavill business. I like him, and I’m not convinced that this isn’t all just some contract negotiation or something. His tweet last night was WEIRD. Anyway, the internet is rumbling forward, like those Mortal Engines… here’s some good thoughts about a fresh take on Superman… and here’s the current (apparently) Vegas odds… along with another set of ideas, with some overlap…  of course Bosslogic is already at it, as well, pissing off some people who can’t grasp a non-anglo Supes….
  • Han Solo in carbonite costume! SWEET! Lung was mortified…
  • This actually took me by surprise: Jason Todd and Dick Grayson face to face in Titans. Lots of fans will be into that.
  • I have seen virtually nothing with Aaron Paul, though I’m well aware of him and his pedigree. Sounds like a great add to Westworld!
  • This series of arts featuring warrior versions of Disney Princesses was controversial in my home. It was first seen by my lovely wife, who had a very negative reaction to the weapons “That’s the answer? Arm them?” and I realized that I saw it, positively, coming from the young adult/adult RPG/cosplay perspective, not the viewpoint of young girls. Interesting!
  • I saw this Lego KITT and cracked up, imagining a stop motion thing where you move a red brick left to right along the front to make the light bar. HA. I amuse me.
  • Venom as PG-13? All hope is lost.
  • Oh boy, what have they done. Robot Man was looking cool in profile… but check out his smashed together eyes and jangy mouth. GUH.
  • This fan theory about Iron Man I agree with. I felt similar. Like any good time travel/time revert story, the pivotal character must be faced with losing something. Think that incredible end of Fringe. That it would be Iron Man makes the most sense.
  • I’ve been begging for a Jon Hamm Bruce Wayne since forever. So YES.
  • Accurate.
  • A new Coen Brothers trailer is a reason to celebrate. Break out the frontier whiskey!
  • Finally, Rupert’s new Captive State seems never more relevant, doesn’t it?

He Even Paid for That Suit – Robots Root 30 July 2018

As rumors of the Batman solo film increasingly draw comparisons to Batman: Year One, I grow more and more cautiously optimistic. I want facking dark gray under-armor, combat boots, hand stitched cowl and cape, an army/navy surplus belt, flash bangs and sharpened steel knives. And I want failure. [Art by the One Dave Johnson ]

Meanwhile…

  • Honest Trailer for Ready Player One is honest.
  • Captain America’s proposed cameo in Ant-Man and Wasp would have actually been pretty good. Though I agree with the choice to exclude it. Not necessary.
  • The logic here is pretty screwy. Them lost all sense.
  • Reading the creators wax optimistic about future Venom films, I’m reminded of a logical but problematic detail: in reports from SDCC it was noted that Venom doesn’t have the chest symbol. Makes sense, in an origin without a Spider-Man connection. Yet, without that white spider across the chest, this will just be a big rubbery black blob with teeth and googly eyes.
  • The latest on again, off again rumors are that New Mutants shit the bed and X-Men is a hot mess, and that both may be scrapped by Disney. Its both premature and hazy, and I don’t yet take them seriously.
  • Henry Cavill says he’d be down to play Bond, because of course he’s a tall white European and he wears a suit well. I’m OK with it.
  • Against all odds, Deadwood as a film has finally been greenlit, and actor schedules have been sorted out.
  • Stoned Alone. This is like that grocery store animated film from a few years ago. The concept is more stoney than the end result could even be, and I love them both for being things.

  • Iron Fist’s twitter has been posting episode names as battered storefront signage. .I’m really in love with this marketing concept.
  • In an interesting development, AMC and their legal representation have vetted Chris Hardwick and are bringing him back. They don’t outright state the claims against him by his ex are unfounded, but they are taking the risk of reinstating him. This not being the certain political world where gross people are doing gross things with impunity, but rather the world of sensitive entertainment business where creators have been sacked in recent days for old tweets.
  • I’m delighted that Denis Villeneuve is planning to shoot Dune as only the first half of the first book, rather than cramming everything in. More room to breathe and build the world with some elegance.
  • The moment the actress was cast, I knew there’d be a racist dust-up over Starfire. After the trailer, it was certain. Some pitiful trolls are on the attack, surprising precisely no one.

  • August 24th, AMC… let’s not let this one slip past us, pals.

Finally, I know it’s an important film in culture, etc etc but I’m just so in love with this shot of Tessa Thompson.

MAH MAN – Robots Root 19 July 2018

Look, I’m as surprised as you are. I LIKE the classic colors here. What a (rare) successful update of a golden age look! The other statues show details from the costumes that I quite like as well. More, including the costumes on display at SDCC here.

Also, dig the BRINE KING yall.

Meanwhile,

  • Comcast, bless their cold, vindictive hearts, caved and dropped out of their bidding for Fox’s assets. They were mostly after the sports division, I think. But still. The idea of Fox and Comcast being connected displeased me. It was like a landfill filled with corpses. Metaphorically.
  • Shile ST4 having a female crewperson added, a female villain, and a female director, are all welcome things… I’m still not sure about dredging up Kirk’s pappy. Unless he were UNDEAD.
  • So stoked on the Umbrella Academy adaptation.
  • Remember when I was joking (so to speak) about how the Robin promo pic looked all grim and gritty, reminding me of the Snyderverse-version Robin uniform shown in B V S… well, it looks like they dove deep.
  • Meanwhile, the details about the Joker film sound pretty predictable to this guy. Fortunately Zazie Beatz will (presumably) be in it so thats a reason to see it anyway.
  • In this skit about Batman trying to join the cool kids Avengers table, I liked how the laughter from the audience dipped a bit once Andy as Robin started shredding the Marvel characters.
  • James Gunn being fired from GOG3 over his well-established early jack-ass tweets, which were previously cleared by Disney… this is beyond strange and frankly smacks of pandering. Especially given this was all known and resolved prior, and had been dredged up by conservatives in response to his political attacks on the Trump Administration. So, more to the point and less about politics, scandal was created to silence a voice. One more casualty of the current hypocrisy.

Finally, I leave you with a successful piece of targeted marketing for this guy:

Alfred Has the Moves – Robots Root 9 July 2018

Look, I’ve watched this about 33 times and it’s not old yet. It’s amazing. AMAZING.

Here’s a Call of Cthulu game review. If you read it, you’ll start smelling colors, so beware!

MIA’s Paper Planes supercut with MUSKETS instead of gunfire. It’s a nearly 13 minute video, so high concept and pretty great. You don’t have to watch it. Just enjoy that it exists. Two minutes in and it wasn’t even done with the first volley in the main refrain, because the musket rate of fire is like 30s. The video is intercut with some Austrian 18th century recreationist group on a parapet somewhere. Hilarious. I appreciate.

Anime style fanarts of popular 80s action/SF movies activated!

7,000 degrees Kelvin. ha! Also I love both of those, though i’ve never tried them together…

I just can’t wrap my head around the idea that there hasn’t been a live-action Gundam yet. Seems the technology is ready.

Thats all for now! Back to melting alive while your eyeballs implode!
