MAH MAN – Robots Root 19 July 2018

Look, I’m as surprised as you are. I LIKE the classic colors here. What a (rare) successful update of a golden age look! The other statues show details from the costumes that I quite like as well. More, including the costumes on display at SDCC here.

Also, dig the BRINE KING yall.

Meanwhile,

  • Comcast, bless their cold, vindictive hearts, caved and dropped out of their bidding for Fox’s assets. They were mostly after the sports division, I think. But still. The idea of Fox and Comcast being connected displeased me. It was like a landfill filled with corpses. Metaphorically.
  • Shile ST4 having a female crewperson added, a female villain, and a female director, are all welcome things… I’m still not sure about dredging up Kirk’s pappy. Unless he were UNDEAD.
  • So stoked on the Umbrella Academy adaptation.
  • Remember when I was joking (so to speak) about how the Robin promo pic looked all grim and gritty, reminding me of the Snyderverse-version Robin uniform shown in B V S… well, it looks like they dove deep.
  • Meanwhile, the details about the Joker film sound pretty predictable to this guy. Fortunately Zazie Beatz will (presumably) be in it so thats a reason to see it anyway.
  • In this skit about Batman trying to join the cool kids Avengers table, I liked how the laughter from the audience dipped a bit once Andy as Robin started shredding the Marvel characters.
  • James Gunn being fired from GOG3 over his well-established early jack-ass tweets, which were previously cleared by Disney… this is beyond strange and frankly smacks of pandering. Especially given this was all known and resolved prior, and had been dredged up by conservatives in response to his political attacks on the Trump Administration. So, more to the point and less about politics, scandal was created to silence a voice. One more casualty of the current hypocrisy.

Finally, I leave you with a successful piece of targeted marketing for this guy:

Its the Little Things – 4 July 2018

This is an old poster from a few weeks ago, but I still love it: the swagger, and the use of the popcorn and more importantly the dust or salt, really works for me. Early reviews are very complimentary, so I look forward to seeing it soon.

Meanwhile:

Still on the move, after San Francisco Comic Con and Fandemic Con… I’ve started putting photos up from both shows on our IG (find it at robotkraken_podcast ) but there’s still a lot to catch up on.

  • I do wish it talked to you in a mollifyingly calm voice or locked you out of your own house… but as a low-capacity, overpriced flash drive, it’ll do.
  • First pics of Linda Hamilton in the new Terminator filming sneaks, and no surprise, she looks RAD. Meanwhile, Mackenzie Davis just looks like a dirty Robin Wright, but with cyber-stitches.
  • Here’s some prosthetic limb experiments with ‘pain’ sensory input. At the least, tactile feedback is crucial.
  • According to some that have seen it, the upcoming Dark Phoenix trailer is ‘better than expected’ which is high praise. ha.
  • TMNT is headed for yet another reboot. I’m ok with it. There were a few concepts from the Bayification I liked OK, from what i saw, but I’d really like to see something more like the Incredibles style, where the stylization is more creative and animated.
  • The Disney acquisition plan is off and then on and then off and now looks greenlit by both investors and the SEC. I’m stoked. I want those toys played with in those hands.
  • Sylvia Hoeks is NOT who I imagined to take the Tara role in Queen and Country. However, she IS cool and I just love that the film is proceeding.
  • Silk has apparently been greenlit at Sony… look, this is the first one with half a chance. It’s the modern Spider-Woman that the younger set relates to, and while it will still feel like a Spider-Man knock-off, at least it has a female, and Asian, in the lead role. And if they run with Tiffany Espenson from the Spider-Man: Homecoming casting, I’m even more into it.
  • The fact that the news sites are running with this story that Ultron could have had a bigger, badder, better final act shows how blah the original was in the public consciousness… because a giant Ultron-globbed giant giant Ultron is lame as shit.
  • I mean, kids are dumb… but in this modern world we are descending into, I can actually SEE this being an issue.
  • If you are near Alamo Drafthouse (or one in particular) they are getting into the subscription game.
  • Not sure how I feel about Patrick Stewart supposedly getting close to signing on for another Trek series. I hope it’s the type of thing where he’s an elder Commander or something. I like seeing the passage of time and evolution of characters. I do NOT want to see the Good Ole Crew together on an old timey adventure again, though.
  • How would you feel about a V for Vendetta sequel? The unasked question, I think.
  • This Iron Man/ TRON mashup is A M A Z E. I love it 10,000 x 3 times.

Speaking of catching up, we are a bit behind in the podcast as we were unable to record during the shows and are now all scrambling in different parts of the world for a few weeks. We have a few films to review, as well as the finales of Westworld and Expanse to wrap up… so stay tuned!

Storm of Toleyous – Robot’s Root 25 May 2017

A trailer for Game of Thrones seems superfluous at this point: everyone will be watching, unless they won’t, and those who won’t won’t be persuaded to watch. However, my personal resolve to not watch this trailer lasted precisely three brand-aware hours. And here’s a breakdown of details I’m not reading.

Lo, Robot’s Root!

  • Wait. WHUT. Barry Pepper forges his own weapons?
  • And there goes Doug Liman for Justlice League Dark…
  • Matt Reeves wants ALL THE VILLAINS. Hoenestly I do think this is the direction the new standalone Batman film should take: trapped in Arkham, with all of your enemies therein, now armed for bear. I’d love to see Joker pitting them all against Batman as he struggles to fight his way out and contain the threat.
  • Black Tom Cassidy could be the main villain in Deadpool2. He’s been cast, at any rate.
  • A Kris Anka illustrated Runaways reboot? I’m interested.
  • Josh Boon describes the New Mutants film as straight-up horror.
  • I know I’m not the only one that first thought (hope springs eternal) that Elizabeth Moss was cast as Typhoid Mary… from DAREDEVIL…
  • These Leibovitz photos of the Last Jedi stuff really fired me up. I love the baroque early 1900s gambling planet business. With space goats! But also Laura Linney has all the color!
  • Everything you wanted picked apart from the latest Homecoming trailer here. And here’s that trailer. But we have a Spanish quiz!
  • Finally, a TMNT pizza cookbook happened.

That’s all for now. Go grab your dragon eggs. It’s only fire.

On a very bad night for me, spirits are uplifted by:
1. Wu-Tang infused Luke Cage trailer
2. Iron Fist teaser
3. DD Season WHICH NOW? Oh, my new desktop?

ITEM: Well, at least they’re making it their own Tick, right? Peter Serafinowicz looks damn peculiar. I’m optimistic though. I mean, they couldn’t just redo the previous look…

ITEM: I’m not caught up on all these cartoons, but I’ve caught quite a few as my kids watched (Justice League, Young Justice, etc) and this one looks pretty good. Sidekicks, indeed.

ITEM: Speaking of air hoses (from yesterday, Apocalypse) this new dude in Rogue One has some cool details. I like it! I meann, it’s no Unity Adam… but still.

And now, more miscellaneous awesome:

Batman, by Ben Oliver

Look! Geoff Darrow is still at it. I mean REALLY still at it.

This was from a weird unlicensed local monopoly set that we found in my lovely wife’s hall closet, featuring local businesses as the properties, etc. We estimate it was 1979 or 1980. Anyway, DOJR here included, among their features, tear gas sales and training. That’s nice.

Image
LOVED this old school noir cover for International Iron Man. Artist unknown at this time

Image
Another glimpse at X-Men: Apocalypse concept art. I hate them. Except for Jean Grey, where they took some of the lines from some of her 90s looks (vertical color blocking) but changed the colors. I mean, it’s not flattering, but its less aggravating than the other two.

This was a blast from the past. Mousers? Mousoids?

Finally, a peek at the corner of my sweet laptop. For science.

That is all. Back to your Chewbacca snubbing…

WHY CANT THIS BE NOW.

The latest Cap trailer came out for thesuperbowls, and we saw many good things. New Ant-man costume. Bucky in stasis. And my favorite part: Stark grabbing a bullet.

1. Great piece by Andrew Robinson…

4. These figures were well sculpted. I acted fast, to get the WW for my daughter before they disappeared.

I got Batman for me, of course. I mean, my son.

6. Pandemic + EA = MEH; the story of the Dark Knight game that fell apart just before the film was released, costing WB about a million in related ticket revenue, and Pandemic their entire studio.

7. These comments from George Miller about the collapse of JLI Mortal have been going around, and aren’t very interesting. However, I DO like this fan art. Sharp nosed Batman!

8. Bourne got its first official trailer during thesuperbowls, and I was thoroughly underwhelmed. Which is not to say I won’t love the film, just that, as a trailer, it did little for me other than annoy me with hyperbole ‘WE NEED THE PERFECT WEAPON!’….

9. Mike and Dave Need Wedding Dates… I didn’t know anything about this until the trailer was force fed to me by Youtube this morning. Interestingly, what I liked most about it wasn’t the gratuitous Aubry Plaza undie ass shots… but rather, that she continues to take on roles that are different, and interesting diversions, from her Parks character, which is something I wasn’t sure would be possible. Last week it was casting confirmation on X-Men: Legion, and now this. But even better, I’m enjoying the conceit here that the douchey guys are getting out-douched by the girls. Not a bad premise, for this sort of film, if they can pull the tone off right.

10. The Ant-Man movie could have been funnier, maybe, though I quite liked it. But this simple commercial pulled off several things:
1. Reminder of how interesting playing off Ant-Man’s size against normal, or particularly larger, characters could be.
2. More Spider-Man vibe THAN Spider-Man
3. Dextrous way of dealing with a sponsor/ad/product placement integration problem. The desirability of the product is implied, the characters remain reasonably on-model for their personalities, and the commercial uses their powers to great effect in the story. The attention to character specific detail… the craters under Ant-Man when he lands… Hulk fumbling with the pull tab…
not bad!

11. TMNT 2… well, I’ve been vocal that I wasn’t pulled into the TMNT movie, though I didn’t particularly hate it either (except the noses… the noses)… it just felt like a generic Bay/Ratner style film… virtually visually indistinguishable from Transformers. That said, I like the cut of the sequel trailer’s jib quite a bit more. Feels more like the Turtles. I really like the curious proportions on Krang, I’ve seen the art for Bebop and Whomever (Kris mocks me about this on Robot-Kraken, that I can’t get the names right) and you know what, it works. Or it seems to.

12. Two Turkish Air spots from thesuperbowls feature fictional new route announcements to Gotham and Metropolis, which is fine. I wonder if there was one with Gal Gadot they pulled (recall they forced the takedown of those earlier photos of her on a TA flight) or if that’s from the film directly. Also, setting aside the fact that its jarring to see both characters pretending to fly commercial (and coach) what bugged me was the frequent and persistent presence of the ACE CHEMICAL neon sign. Yeah, yeah, we get it. What industrial chemical manufacturer needs a corporate tower int he heart of the business district?! Meh. Knowing movies, they even cook the chems there. On site. MEH! Ok, I’m done.

13. Daredevil S02 can’t come soon enough. However, the one weak link remains that armored costume. I keep saying: ‘just make it RED’. You’ve all heard me whine about. I whine about it frequently. But hey, here’s concept art showing how close they came to doing it right. GAH.
http://geektyrant.com/news/2-alternate- … r-season-2

That’s it for today! Go forth and Roll thy 20s….
