Have You Ever Danced With Shermin-Williams in the Pale Moonlight? – Robot’s Root 11 Feb 2018

I don’t know what to make of this Todd Phillips 80s Pre-Joker movie with Jaoquin Phoenix. I mean, I like when they experiment. But DCEU has such a low track record as far as experimenting with VISION. On the other hand, a film about that whole Vision Family in Suburbia book would be legendary. The image above, though, from a set of fan arts, really appeals to me… or peels… I love the flaking paint situation happening.

Meanwhile, these things:

  • When your director backs out of He-Man because they’re too busy with… Krypton… then you KNOW its serious.
  • Even deleted scenes are hilarious. Ragnarok still owns me.
  • This deleted scene from JL is actually pretty good, from a world-building standpoint. It shows a newly revived Kal-El wandering the halls of his old ship, and as he approaches, it automatically offers various resources for him, including the all-black supersuit and the Kryptonian battle armor… internally consistent-ish with Man of Steel. I appreciate that.
  • The winner of that huge 10-year Class Photo MCU situation is clearly Benedict Wong, because player brought a pocket watch on a vest chain.
  • More stuff showing consistency with the McQuarrie front end on the Falcon. Even if it is all part of the longer front end ‘docking module’ which works fine for me, I just don’t know what to make of images like this, below, where it’s longer but there’s a slot. Maybe the central spine is also a modular element than can be removed, separately from the longer vice clamp bits. Maybe, though, these other images are just earlier in the production design… or possibly fake. These days, who knows. This example below, which has been around for months, is the most mystifying. It looks too consistent to be a total fake, so I wonder if it was just earlier in the production. Because it deviates too much from what we’ve seen now. Wrong dish antenna, different front end, no blue and white paint… it does have the turret.

That’s enough for today. Back to rolling housepaint over my face to appear edgy.

Load “Robot-Kraken” comma 8 comma 1 – PRESS PLAY ON TAPE! 29 Sept 2017

To hell with the Twitch whatever… I’ll take a mini C64, thanks! I mean, I won’t. But I WOULD.

Meanwhile…

’tis Robot’s Root:

  • Michelle Williams has reportedly joined the cast of Venom, opposite Tom Hardy. Say what you will about the garbage level of Sony’s productions, that’s good wattage.
  • Man, if only I had time to play them video games! Red Dead 2!
  • Sneak peeks at Runaways are thoroughly CW style meh. I refuse to abandon hope. But I worry when a teaser image bores me. More pics, showing the different kids…
  • Kind of neat to see how much the new Tomb Raider is pulling from the game.
  • Isle of Dogs is pre-suffering from sort of appropriation backlash which feels pretty beyond the pale to me. Again, I can’t speak for anyone but myself, but Anderson always uses whatever voice actors he likes, in any role. And there are plenty of Japanese voice actors on this project. Reaching…
  • When this kind of thing is still happening in the US, it’s easy to imagine True Detective having traction for more gritty, urban stories. Bring on Mahershala Ali already!
  • It slays me that BB-9E was called ‘BB-H8’ on set. I’ll never not hear that in my inner monologue.
  • Oh look: Nice Guys TV adaptation, but with women! UGH. Actually, I loved the Nice Guys, and I’d love an all female retro buddy cop show. But adaptations…
  • THERES NO PROBLEM IN THE DCEU STOP ASKING.
  • SW: Battlefront II will feature the Emporer’s posthumous kill-em-all plans… I’m intrigued in that alone, let alone the whole game which i will love, buy, and rarely have a chance to play.
  • Skinless Rocket Raccoon. Have fun tonight…
  • What’s this! Snow Crash adapted for Amazon? Now we’re talking…
  • this, wonderful thing, this amazing, wonderful thing, for one lung
  • And now, more desktop imagery for you: retro power station control rooms. AWESOME.

With that, I leave you to your theoretical leisure.

So Many Thrusters – Robots Root 23 May 2017

Feast your eyes on the largest, and possibly the most awesome, Ideas set to date. I was sold on the lunar modules alone, but the whole thing is glorious (I don’t like the micro figures, but I understand them) and nothing is hotter, so to speak, than the thrusters. GET IT!

And with that, we unleash Robot’s Root for 22 May 2017!

  • Schwarzenegger announced he’s back in on the Terminator franchise with Cameron’s involvement. Now, he’s big on hyperbole and hype, and Cameron would be at best producing, and my patience for elder terminator wanes… but it’s new Terminator SOMETHING anyway. That said as someone who enjoyed Genesys despite its flaws.
  • Fun with AIs: watch a neural network learn GTA through violence. It’s like the pre-opening credits scene for a post-apocalyptic rise of the robots movie. WHAT COULD GO WRONG.
  • I agree with the consensus view: Amber Heard’s Mera costume for Aquaman is refreshingly comic-compliant, colorful, and not particularly overwrought. That said, rumors abound that Momoa will be in some version of the green and gold as well.
  • Tom Hardy as ________ is always a win in my book. I hope it’s Agent Venom, not 90s venom (regardless of the character’s name, Brock, not being Flash Thompson) and I hope it’s just a good film on its own, but I can’t help but bring in my skepticism since this is a) Fox, b) intended to not be part of the MCU, d) not part of Spider-Man at all, but 4) part of a new Spider-Universe that again, will not include Spider-Man. Lets be positive. and do shots. We may need them. I’d rather live in a world with this film done well than one without it.
  • I love the ‘how character x should have looked!’ listicles… sometimes they are hot garbage click bait, but I enjoy when they employ really shifty photomanips designed to make classic costumes look terrible.
  • Surprising news over the weekend was that Zack Snyder and his wife are stepping down from Justice league; the reported reasoning being recovery after his daughter’s suicide which had been kept from the press until now. Joss Whedon to pick up the reigns. This will be interesting.
  • These are nice photos. Everyone’s hot for Leia’s, understandably, but I found it interesting that Luke is the only one with that faraway gaze.
  • I really want Paramount’s Monsterverse, sorry, DARK UNIVERSE, to succeed. I like the cast they’ve gathered. Hot photo ops don’t hurt.
  • Speaking of Paramount, new very spoilery image from Mummy revealed:
  • Roger Moore has merged with the infinite. I had lost track of him. 89!
  • What a horrific scene. Part of me is pretty glad it is implied without being shown, because that would be hard to watch. Like most things, the horror is most effective when you have to imagine it. Logan was fine as is.
  • Here’s why ‘The Defenders’ is like the Wu-Tang Clan and Luke Cage is Ghostface
  • New villain for Hellboy reboot revealed

And with that, I leave you to imagining the rad Lego bots I could make with those thrusters. My word.

Robots Root – 6 April 2017

Above, let’s take a moment to relish Keron Grant’s Gotham City Garage design as executed in this statue. The badass pose, the ink, the translucent bike farings… I mean… I look at this often for inspiration. Gorgeous.

On to Robot’s Root for 6 April 2017

Meanwhile, out there, these:

  • Trip out: One of Ridley Scott’s proposed endings for Alien involved Ripley being facepunched and then the xenomorph, via tentacle(?) using her com panel perfectly mimicking a human voice. I mean. I love it.
  • I know it’s not super cool to be buzzing about the Defenders right now, but that’s how the backlash works. This weird viral teaser involves the team looking wiped out in an elevator… there’s a URL that gets you into interesting territory involved, and it reveals the launch date for the series… but all i can focus on is Matt Murdock’s headpiece. I get it: no one else has a secret identity, but this is the Netflix equivalent of the old ‘spare FF costume’ thing in the 80s when Peter Parker, after ditching the symbiote costume at the Baxter Building (maybe? It’s hazy) left the building in a spare FF jumpsuit minus gloves and boots, and wearing a paper bag on his head. It was surreal. He couldn’t just leave the building in some of Johnny Storm’s spare clothes as Parker?? Like through the lobby? I remember thinking: TOO MUCH DRUG U GUISE. Anyway, there you go. No one would recognize Murdock’s suit I guess. Or rather, ask the basic questions. But whatever, still into it. See you in August.
  • Welp, Rainn Wilson has signed onto the new ST series as… Mudd… so that’s a thing that’s happening.
  • Uh, Marvel’s VP is stepping into it… and then, maybe 24 hours later, two ‘diversity’ titles got Hugos. Nice.
  • Justin Theroux and Tom Hardy supposedly in SW VIII works for me. Entirely works.
  • Give that Mouse laptop company from Japan some due credit: good ad agency. Number one good.
  • Um WHUT. But Yeah Preacher S02, can’t come soon enough.

Six Seven Go To Hell or Go To Heaven – 21 Mar 2017

Tomenosuke PRO Blaster
Let me tole you: if I didn’t have kids in the home, and DID have $899 laying around…
link!

Meanwhile:

– As much as I crave new Hans Zimmer soundtracks, this interview, reposted across various sites, warmed my heart a bit, because I share a devotion to the Nolan Batman films as well. It’s a very intimate and purposeful connection, the soundtrack developed for that trilogy and the material itself. Nolan and Zimmer work well together, thematically (witness Inception and Interstellar for examples outside of the superhero genre) and when Zimmer did the Man of Steel soundtrack, while it was excellent and distinct, it was lending some of that former world’s pedigree to the new films in a way I found disconnected. link!

– Sony wants to proceed with fast-tracking Venom, without a script or director… in the post-Marvel-deal era, what do YOU want from a Venom film? I can’t decide. I really don’t like the character outside of Spidey using the suit and then slowly going batty from the symbiote’s influence. Once it jumped to other hosts and became 90seriffic, I was out. I do like the black ops version from recent years in the comics, but I don’t see how it would translate. link!

– Similarly, WB / DC seem intent on keeping the Flash moving forward (heh) despite multiple issues with the pre-production. That’s not a good sign. link!

– RIP Bernie Wrightson. That escalated fast.
Not my artistic influence, and I didn’t read a lot of his stuff, but I always admired it from a technical level and enjoyed reading about his convention persona. link!

– We’re doomed. More. link! Mega-rich oligarches in powered armor!

– Expanse has been greenlit for Season 3, so I can now relax.

– Alicia Vikander may be joining a new Ben Wheatley project involving kicking nocturnal underground beastie ass. His current project looks insane and awesome, so let’s be optimistic.

– Becky Cloonan’s poster for Ghost in the Shell is EVERYTHING. link!

– Reddit is questionable for a lot of things. But the AMA (Ask Me Anything) series is not one of them. Here’s Gareth Edwards… link!

Image
Your random Mike Mignola block-rockin art used as a bossbot’s iphone screen for today.

– I’m generally not a fan of cosplayers photographed and then given a bunch of post FX. I like the craft of the costuming itself, and that’s as far as I go. However, this is really well done. link!

– Apparently Hela knows capoeira in the new Thor film. I appreciate it’s a gladiator road trip movie, but that’s quite a diversion from the comics. Then again, probably a welcome one. Stand around and glower megagod types are boring on film. link!

– Good news for this guy, having just finished Peaky Blinders S03… S04 is due to begin production, and Tom Hardy will return. link!

– So Fox’s X-Men show for broadcast TV? The one with a family on the run with a mutant child, which seems to have little to know recognizable X-anything in it except for Sentinels? Is it going to be called Mutants on the Run? MutantsSuxxxx? Mutant? Nope. GIFTED. Srsly. I was gifted. I had to do more homework. That is all. link!

Image
Here’s your random Black Adam speculative rendering for today, by Chris Diem. Love it. Great proof of concept…

– Henry Cavill is on board for MI: 6. That’s interesting! I hope he’s a villain. Not a team member who betrays them, but a proper villain. link!

– How strange the wheel is… Matt Vaughn gave the X-Men franchise a brief moment of hope, before getting forced out by Bryan Singer. Now, after doing his own thing (Kick Ass, Kingsmen) he’s back in the big studio system’s favor for supehero tentpoles, being supposedly courted for the next Superman film. If true, that’s something to be modestly optimistic about, similar to what happened with batman. link!

Wake Me Up Before You Nyong’o – 13 May 2016

Image
Supposedly Lupita Nyong’o has been cast in the new Black Panther movie. The early reports suggest love interest, because of course they do, but I’d love to see her as another member of the Dora Milaje, which I assume we saw one of in Civil Tole.

In other news…

Image
Carla Juri has been cast in another unspecified role in Blade Runner 2. I don’t know anything about her other than that she’s Swiss and striking. But more than that, I like that we have no indication of who anyone is playing. The less we know, the better, for as long as possible.

I really like Olivia Munn. Sure, a lot of it stems from personal aesthetic preference and too many Attack of the Show viewings. But I liked that she landed the Psylocke role, and enjoyed reading about all her training and seeing her IG feed videos of same. She stated in an interview published recently that she turned down (or turned down auditioning for) the role of Deadpool’s love interest, Vanessa . As we al know, that role went to Morena Baccarin, and she hit it out of the park. Now, I lamented on our Robot-Kraken podcast that I had wished for less damsel in distress in hooker gear and more active participation, in that role. However, there’s a case to be made that Vanessa was written as a survivor, rather than a victim, as noted here:
http://www.thewrap.com/why-deadpools-pr … han-he-is/
Sadly, early reports from viewers of X-Men: Apocatole indicate that Psylocke isn’t given as much to do as we thought, and that sucks, given that Munn clearly believed she had some THERE there in the X-Men script.

Rumor has it Professor X will be in the New Mutants film. I’m beyond nauseated at the shoehorning of the original X-Men cast into all these other projects. But, I will admit, if one project needs Professor X, it’s New Mutants. That said, I still don’t understand the role of a New Mutants film when the X-movies set all the characters firmly in school. NM at the time was a return to that story setting, after a few years of Uncanny X-Men’s out-of-school adventures, returning to the sort of background the original X-Men endured: super high school.

I was quite disappointed to learn that Disney just sunsetted Infinity. My kids were too young to play, and we were holding out (at my lovely wife’s request)… but the collector/old miniature guy side of me couldn’t wait to go deep into debt buying $15 figures that unlocked characters and powers within a free roam game where you could design your own maps like LBP. THE CORRECT NUMBER OF IRON MANS IS N+1 – 160511

Netflix has a new Voltron series coming out in June which is great for a number of reasons: the original series isn’t readily available, and the remake they came out with in the late aughts is painfully bad, so I have to listen to that dreck some evenings, shortening my lifespan. This one also is animated by the team that brought… well, many other popular modern anime to us… and one lion (the bigger guy goes with the bigger character OF COURSE) is voiced by TRDL fave Tyler Labine. So, awesome!

The latest rumors on Justice League et al:

Image
– Steppenwolf will be the big bad of Justice League, and this is the demon dude seein in that Communion deleted scene from B v S that I hoped was actually Darkseid because rad, doesn’t look like a stonefaced uncle from Jersey. But anyway, being a Marvel guy I didn’t know who Steppenwolf was, looked it up, and it’s either a Kirby character from the 70s who led the planetary military of Apokolips and survived a Doomsday encounter; OR, it’s the living embodiment of a 20’s German novel; OR, it’s the singular embodiment of an old progrock band that plagued me in my early childhood. You decide.
http://birthmoviesdeath.com/2016/05/11/ … ice-league

– Affleck is now rumored to be really upset and humiliated after going out on a limb in the press work up for BvS about his performance jokingly being ‘better than Daredevil’ and yet, BvS scores (unfairly) lower on Rotten Tomatoes, which everyone brings up to him now in his driveway; He’s also rumored to have received an Executive producer credit on Justice League, which can often mean HE SHOWED UP, but could also (hopefully) mean WB is leveraging him into a position to take the reins from Snyder at some point.

Daredevil rules everything around me.
The Season 02 part 02 trailer just came out, and it’s the Elektra side of things… but also the HAND… and I’m just bowled over. The Punisher promise was enough for a season. Now this! Other projects I would fear too many villains, etc etc but here, I trust they’ve got the balance right.

1. Lucas Museum Heads to Oak- Wait No It Isnt: This was surprising bullshit even for bizjournal. All that happened was that the Lucas Museum project ran into opposition in Chicago and they trotted out the old ‘we’re talking to other cities MEH!’… and then a rep from a development organization in Oakland publicly dropped that they would love to host the museum. This is like when celebrities plant rumors of themselves being in the running for parts by just SAYING they are interest in interviews and talk shows enough times. But it’s Oakland, so it’s more like Sean Young showing up in a Target Catwoman costume. But let’s not forget that SF couldn’t get over it’s own fat head to allow this to happen in the Presidio organically as it should have.

Four-Color Follies: I’m still not really on board with these DC properties on TV, though I want to try a few more of them… but between Legions of Tomorrow doing Quantum Leap with a who’s who of grade B heroes and villains, to Supergirl and Flash doing crossovers, to characters like Hellraiser living on even when their shows are cancelled… on other networks… I have to say, it’s a good time to be a DC fan, if you like this kind of stuff. I’ve been focusing on the Marvel shows so much, I haven’t really thought about how while the Marvel properties are playing it pretty low key with the imagery (costuming is muted for the TV version of the MCU) the DC side of things is veering on cosplay style fanservice for so much of the look and the content.

Review: Mad Max – Fury Road

I am finally writing again and with this, my first review since 2012 on my blog – MAD MAX – Goddamn Awesome.

MAD MAX: FURY ROAD
Directed by George Miller
Starring Tom Hardy, Charlize Theron
2015 – [R] – Post-Apocalyptic Adventure

Re: Max, still wandering the post apocalyptic wasteland, gets mixed up in a plan to assist a cyborg in the escape of five winsome lasses from their mutant husband. There are two car chases.

Outstanding: Pretty much anything and everything. I wanted to enjoy this flick and ended up loving it. The world is fully realized, with unique little details I would never have expected. The chase scenes, which encompass the bulk of the movie are unrelenting, nearly all practical effects and stunning. I seriously can’t say enough good about this movie. There is enough eye candy amongst the various cars, tribes of mutants and set pieces that I could watch it a dozen times and still spot cool little details.

Unacceptable: If you are expecting the slow burn sax lounge scene from the first Mad Max, or the Feral Boomerang child that spoke in animal sound clips from Road Warrior, Or Tina Turner in a glam wig, or if you are just generally a curmudgeonly hipster that refuses to believe a sequel to a classic can ever be good, you may be disappointed.

Summary: Seriously one of the most enjoyably batshit insane and beautiful movies I have ever seen.

5/5

Notes: My brother and I saw this in 3D and I can honestly say it was one of the better 3D movies I’ve seen. In a lot of movies, the 3D effect comes off as a little fake – like there’s a 2D person here, a 2D person three feet beyond and a flat background, with some cool stuff floating between. The 3D in Fury Road was subtle and added a real sense of depth to the landscape and chases and during the more intense sequences, of which there were many, I actually found myself jumping as things came towards me.
