Custom Decorative Tissue – Robots Root 30 Jan 2018

The Ultimate Unboxing Video, by goneintorapture.com. I still can’t stop staring at it. I love it so.

Meanwhile, in space:

  • While the execution is a little rough, i like the concept of Westworld viral being Delos interfaces and data screens that have been corrupted by bloody warnings and cries for help. Also, I’m holding my breath until Westworld S02, thanks. LOVE it.
  • This look at the new tech used to film the Valkyrie flashbacks in Ragnarok is fascinating, if you’re into that sort of thing, which I am. Otherwise, just look at the test footage, which feels like a microcosm glance at how fun that shoot must have been. All the behind the scenes stuff makes Waititi feel like a force of nature. A subversive one.
  • I loved this video. I love scale videos. Scale fascinates me. I appreciates that the scale reference module shifts in the video, from a human to a dump truck to the Statue of Liberty. I don’t quite understand the scale mismatch on the Xenomorph (2.1m) and Predator (2.2m) but otherwise very cool. I think my favorite was classic Mothra, complete with a 747 for scale.
  • The fanbase for Monty Python is dying out (more figuratively than literally, one hopes) but for those of us who remember the animations, here’s great archival of Gilliam walking an interviewer through the cut-animation process. Love it. As the so . of past-up artists in the days before digital, I enjoy reminders of the hands-on crafter approach to all of this prior to the advent of modern tools.
  • Jessica Jones S02, March 08, that’s all we need to know. No spoilers so far, which I appreciate, other than hints of Purple Man.
  • Here’s an amazing miniature VHS library. For science.
  • Hans Zimmer is apparently scoring Dark Phoenix. This is only important because Zimmer was supposedly retired from supers films. I just love his scores, regardless of the super side of it, but I do think he elevates material.
  • Indiana Jones 5 begins production in 2019, supposedly. Cue all the skeleton memes from Raiders.

That’s all for today. My today. Probably your last night. Time travel is weird.

You Bring the Silicone I’ll Bring the Sealant – 7 March 2017

link!
Look, you know I’ve thrown my chips in on this film, and it’s not a view shared by everyone I talk to, or even very many. But all this WETA practical work is KILLING me, I love it. All silicone, three layer suit, with no seaming. Makes me think of Ross Gellar and the leather pants scene with all the talcum. Anyway, points for teaching me the term PAULDRON, something I draw and design every day and never knew had a proper name in plate male design, and more points for the use of magnets to hold them on the shoulder so they move properly with the rotator cuff. So much work for something most in the audience will just assume is CGI.

Meanwhile:

– I’m not watching Gotham any longer. I just can’t even. But the best choice they’ve made yet is casting Siddig as Ra’s Al Ghul. I’ve loved this actor in the modern era, so much more than his stint on Star Trek. He was memorable (and underutilized) in Game of Toles, and has surfaced in Peaky Blinders S03 as well. Love him.
link!

– Here’s the first official shots of the punk rock styling of Hela, Thor, and Valkyrie in Thor 3. The short hair on Thor will be polarizing, I’m sure. Almost distracting the complainers from the ethnic shifting on Valkyrie? Probably not, knowing the racist interweb.
link!

– I love the CONCEPT of local real life superhero propaganda figures in the community more than the execution, generally, but this guy actually makes a good case for the ‘homegrown superhero costume’ thing that actually looks reasonable. I can see this as Parker’s first suit, for example.
link!

– Neat video on all the CGI overlayed acting doubles in Logan. i can tell you, you never notice.
link!

– Also, here’s yet another look at that fake comic from the film. SAURON, ha.
link!

– Again, I’m stunned that Netflix greenlit Bright, and against my own bias, I’m going to watch it.
link!

– Michael K Williams has been stealing scenes in a lot of stuff… but wow, he’s going to be a crowd pleaser in Han Solo, no doubt.
link!

– Inhumans roundup for today:
1. Lockjaw being a thing is the best news yet. I have a fondness for the giant teleporting bulldog. Plus, photos from the set show him in pre-CGI massing. Also, Ken Leung joined, which is excellent news. Also, the rest of the casting bores me. It’s a toss up.

– This set of Lego wings is slaying me. I’m so amateur. RAD.
link!

– Jason Issacs has joined ST: Discovery as the Captain. Notable specifically because he won’t be the focus of the narrative, the one conceit that intrigues me about this project.
link!

– Notes from the Beetlejuice that never was.
link!

– Amy Acker joining the X-Men show on Fox is great news, because she’s amazing and desirable. Unfortunately the premise for this show leaves me cold.
link!

– We just talked about Tron 3… now the scuttlebutt is that Disney wants to soft reboot with Jared Leto in the lead role, playing a character that was originally included in the previous Tron 3 script but in a lesser role.
link!

– Here’s the new ‘tamer, lighter’ Batmobile, friends.
link!

-Finally, if you have seen Logan already and want another look, or don’t mind being spoiled if you haven’t, here’s that much ballyhood extra thing:
link!

That’s all for now! I’m hard at work on the TRDL Sourcebooks and Kris is pushing on completing his Princess Bride poster in time for FanX next week. Busy busy. Also, tonight we will begin recording this month’s podcast segments. And hopefully release March’s show.

Ragnarockanrolla – 20 May 2016

Image
Well, looks like Jeff Goldblum wasn’t being courted for the Spider-Man villain after all. Apparently he’s been cast as the Grandmaster, one of Marvel’s space-LSD-era’s wierder demigods, and I’ll hazard a guess, the one responsible for a Planet Hulk type situation in Thor: Ragnarok.

Image
Grandmaster, or as I used to call him, Gamesguy

Meanwhile, Tessa Thompson will play Valkyrie, Cate Blanchett is confirmed as Hela, and Karl Urban will be Skurge (oddly without Enchantress?)… Hey, I drew him awhile back, as seen above.

Founding Beastie Boys member from their punk years, John Berry, died this week. Easy to forget the origin of this band, and that before Luscious Jackson, it was even multi-gender…

Even Lung admits that Powerless looks intriguing. I can’t believe we live in a world [cue trailer guy voice: IN A WORLD…] where we have rival DC and Marvel normal-people-in-supers-world comedies on the fall schedule. I was surprised at the cast that they put together here. Pretty impressive!

In an interview about his acclaimed new show Lady Dynamite, Hurwitz confrmed everyone’s on board for an AD Season 5… but more interesting to me at this juncture: they recut Season 4 as a 22 episode traditional season of AD with the cast and scenes interwoven and the narration redone. That sounds exciting…

When it was announced earlier this week that Supergirl was moving to the CW, many fans began to anticipate the crossover potential. CW is wasting no time, teasing a mega crossover in December with characters from Flash, Arrow, Supergirl, and Toles of Tomorrow (itself an ongoing crossover of sorts, I guess)…

According to the Hollywood Reporter, Michael Keaton is not only back in the running for the Vulture, but in final negotiations… I’m pleased with this possibility. Even if Keaton playing the Vulture is pretty on the nose. Or on the beak.
