They’ll Use Your Bones for Tools – 31 October 2018

In honor of Halloween, here’s a link to the original War of the Worlds broadcast, not to be confused with the two later rebroadcasts within the next 15 years, or any War of the Worlds film or TV projects since. Though, because I am a defender of the movie, I’m using a Tom Cruise War of the Worlds header image because damn, they looked rad. And sounded radder. The rising of the inexplicably buried walker out of a New Jersey intersection is still one of my favorite filmed sequences in the modern era.

Meanwhile, within your treat pail, find these thus:

  • In a somewhat surprise reveal, the Game of Thrones prequel will include and likely feature Naomi Watts. Nice catch!
  • In an optimistic bit of rumor, apparently maybe supposedly Marvel is cooking up a Falcon/Bucky miniseries for the streaming service. That’s a hot one. Their dynamic in Winter Soldier was excellent. Now, allow me to opine: I may be just pushing my own wish fulfillment here, but I suspect Bucky will take the Cap mantle, and this show might be used to bridge or flesh out that transition. Meanwhile, Vision might have a major role in the Scarlett Witch series. I mean, he SHOULD. And meanwhile meanwhile, the rumored Hawkeye project might be a series and include Clint training Kate Bishop. If it followed the story beats and tonal style of the early comic issues, that would lead to one very welcome thing: live action PLESS PLESS!
  • In Mediocre Cosplay News, here’s more pics of the awkward Doom Patrol people with the awkward Titans people. How bad does this project need to be when the promo material is this amateur? I’m weirded out. And, related: here’s Henry Cavill’s costume/makeup tests for Witcher, in which he looks like he wore the black Superman suit we never got to see, but added a Halloween Store wig, and then tried to use the SMOLDER ability from Jumanji.
  • I can’t recall any project like this before: the PG-13 version of Deadpool 2 is to include not ONLY that surreal Princess Bride intro, but a sizable amount of different footage and story beats. It’s like multiversal and stuff.
  • I enjoyed reading this fan theory about Nick Fury knowing the future and setting things up based on Dr. Strange going back in time and warning him, though reading this rambling treatise (sort of an Emporer’s Shanghai Noodles of MCU theories) it’s easy to see how if they weren’t VERY careful we’d have another well-fucked time paradox problem.
  • I keep forgetting to post this youtube video on building Daredevil’s billyclubs… I think Lung found it initially… the thing is, it reminds me that on the show I feel like it’s always been standalone clubs, not connected by wire? Am I misremembering? Because I LOVE when they are connected. Though not when Jimmy Palmiotti draws it and the wire is 333′ of silly string. Editorial over.

Finally, I leave you with this: Bram Stoker’s original defacement of his library source material when writing Dracula. How awesome.

She Does put the Squirrel in the Girl I Guess – 5 July 2016

Image
Anna Kendrick is being widely reported as wanting to play Squirrel Girl, of the most obscure, though recently up-powered and tongue-in-cheekly involved in the mainstream Marvel U, but that’s not at all what happened. However, it fired up a whole metric ton of fan support for the idea. Now me, i’d support Anna Kendrick playing anyone. And tongues in cheeks are welcome.

Points for creating ‘thrusters’ for this Iron Man cosplay… and points for cosplaying one of the rarer armors in the first place. Half of the reason for IM3 act 3 is cosplay anyway.

Nothing really surprising in this list of actors who, uh, didn’t like their experience wearing their costume. They suck, they take hours to put on or apply, they are uncomfortable in use, and in some cases, such as with Margot Robbie, the sex appeal of a skimpy kit can wane when wet and in between takes, etc. But I appreciated Paul Bettany pointedly noting that he was lucky to have the role and isn’t complaining. Because, like being in the public eye, celebrities need to shut it. Just shut it. SHUT IT UP!

Interesting about Miller’s Fury Road being officially released on B/W which I will of course view and love and actually have been hoping for… he makes comments about limited palettes for post-apocalyptic worlds, and it tolly gave me a side tangent, and this is it: I used to say that what I liked about the cyberpunk world of William Gibson’s early work is the hyper saturation of texture and color. Not a designed in your face level of it, but a leftover, dated, still half functioning level of it. Vegas neon and Japanese pop art and brightly colored plastics and chrome all blended into decaying building and bloody pools in the gutters… later, seeing Idiocracy, i realized how much filtering I was doing in my mind’s eye, because trolling around in a technicolor landfill can be pretty overwhelming.

This Lego kit from Nicola Stocchi is neither available nor even real, being a digital exercise on their flickr page (which makes me lament that they didn’t build it properly, same criticism levied on Game of Thrones opening credits)… but one thing I really like about it is the resolution of curved facets which work well here and STILL suck on the Millennium Falcon kits.

Frank Grillo is hamming it up, planting seeds that Crossbones wasn’t atomized in CW. Now, I sort of cringe when celebrities try to desperately drum up fan support for their inclusion in movies… but as a lover of the actor and the character, I’d be down. Limbless, fiery, spine-melted Crossbones 2.0 BRING IT ON! Give him an Iron Man armor and make it the MCU version of Iron Patriot! You heard it here first. You know they read this. And listen to Robot-Kraken.

Here’s a great piece on one of my childhood favorite films: Boorman’s Excalibur. Lots I didn’t know. Great note about the fallout from Camelot as a savage wasteland is a cipher for post-Christianity civilization’s loss of the connection to nature, ie. pagan ritual. Interesting!

Watch the Titanic sink in real time? Who would want to watch that? Actually, it is extremely sobering and frankly, haunting. I skipped ahead to each of the caption moments but still, all in I probably committed about 45 minutes to it over 2 days. I was struck by how SLOW it is. 2.5 hours from strike to sink, and lots of time verrrry slowly failing. Watching the various systems collapse, for example, or how the power reductions meant narrower and narrower telegraph range… the blunders with the lifeboats are well documented and tragic to watch unfold in realtime, and when it sinks, knowing that 1,500 people are still aboard is especially haunting. I was struck by how un-Hollywood it is for the majority of the piece. Slowing, stopping, resuming, stopping, hanging out, gradually engaging in the evacuation… not the sturm and drang of the film… though the last 45 seconds or so are very similar. It’s also creepy that there are no humans rendered in the video. That, along with the calm waters and huge starry sky… make for a chilling viewing. Recommended!

Decepticon Battles Rule Everything Around Me – 13 April 2016

Since it’s been awhile since I shared it, and it was so popular in my home last night, here’s another look at the Soundwave breakdancing video.

The black diving iguana on the Galapagos Islands is pretty rad. It wasn’t a new discovery (Darwin despised them, nicely biased) but once someone posted to rediit or wherever that a godzilla baby was nomming on things underwater it took off.

We’ve seen a lot of cool concept industrial design, since 3D viz tools became so accessible… this Batmobile is no exception. While the numbering is misleading and distracts from seeing the design as a Batmobile and not a race car, it WAS pretty clever as a means of numbering the views. Anyway, I love the red-backed fins and the sweep past the wheels.

Lung has already posted separately, savaging the way the new Dr. Strange trailer looks like a ripoff of Inception, though as is often the case, I’m optimistic. I like, in the poster, how you see his eye through his fingers and the way his hands are prominent.

Meanwhile, Marvel got thirty designers together in one of those Death Star trash compactors, crushing them while they frantically sketched, and then picked the paper out of the gore and taped all the pieces together to come up with this ransom note of a trade dress. Guh.
