An Event! – Robots Root 17 August 2018

I don’t know what you plan on doing for the next two months, but I plan to hold my breath until this is out. Good lord, am I the target market.

Meanwhile, this happened:

  • From the Thanos of Hollywood… “using Rocket Raccoon as a side-arm”… oh man. The dinosaur… THE DUSTICE LEAGUE?!??! I can’t.
  • I hadn’t seen Predators, so I didn’t know these were already sorta a thing. But now they are another thing. And a further example of how Predator is just creep-sliding into being Aliens.
  • Here’s a Dune tabletop game, in which you could never afford scale Spiceworms so whatever.
  • I love these digests of director commentaries, since I barely have time for movies, let alone commentary tracks. I haven’t seen Manhunter in years, but you know I love me some Michael Mann.
  • Look, I’m holding out a bit of hope for Iron Fist S02… even though at this point the bar is so low that the new season aspiring to basically be a Marvel Phase I plot is an accomplishment.
  • Good news, Watchmen fans: the HBO series was greenlit and is in production. I’m optimistic.
  • I was already in because Danny McBride, but the timeliness of this plot line is prescient, given how close we are to the same goddamn mistakes as the housing crisis of 2008.
  • If I had cold hard cash (and loved Disneyland more, as apparently all the adult friends of mine in LA do) this would be the auction to see.
  • Interesting observation about the Ruby Rose as Batwoman ‘controversy’… didn’t consider, or wasn’t aware of, how much the character’s heritage was a part of her identity in the books.
  • I think the cell shading feels a little soft here, like Slugterra looks, rather than how Tron looks, but hey, I’m still down with more of the Star War.
  • The premise of Joel Kinneman’s next series is interesting, in so much as we know very little about it but it sounds promising.
  • Netflix continues to kill it. The Angel is bad ass historical spy drama that I’m going to eat RIGHT up.
  • Treadstone as a series was greenlit, proving once again that Hollywood is afraid to tell a story unless it has the name of another story glued to it. I mean, come on. Couldn’t it have just been ‘Cool Spy Assassination Team’…?
  • Interesting tidbits about a Catwoman solo film that didn’t happen, from John August, a screenwriter I quite like and whose podcast I follow…
  • Lego Voltron. That is all.

And in closing, here’s ANOTHER one for which I am the target market, in the opposite direction, spectrum-wise…

No Good to Me Dead – Robots Root 25 May 2018

Mangold… on board Boba Fett?!? I mean, look: I’m part of the generation of fans that irrationally LOVES Boba Fett, but not part of the generation of fans that loves all those clone business. But if they took the right approach, this could be a pretty innovative piece of the extended SW saga. I want a heist and hunt film, come on!

Meanwhile, these items:

  • Regina King leads a new cast for the Watchmen series on HBO, and while the interwebs seem upset that they aren’t just retelling the same story as the film (and book) I’m looking forward to a story set post-Manhattan in the same continuity. Optimism alert!
  • One of my favorite touches in Deadpool 2 was the inclusion of queer characters where it wasn’t a thing. It wasn’t NOT a thing, either. It was about as controversial as Negasonic moving from one hawt haircut to another, as it should be. More on that when we release the Robot-Kraken Podcast, but look, none of it matters, as far as the haters go, and it REALLY matters, as representation for others, so I’m down.
  • ZOMBIE ALERT!
  • Matt Groening’s Disenchantment. What do you think?
  • Predator = Iron Man 3 + Dark Knight
  • The music is a departure, but everything else is spot on. Preacher S03!
  • Nothing is confirmed until its confirmed, but supposedly non-Batman may be joining previous-Batman in Spidey 2
  • Thanks Comcast. Thanks again. And for SPORTS.
  • One half of this John Wick 3 news is acceptable.
  • OK no joke: the finale of Six Feet Under’s final moments still haunts me. It just wrecked me. Somehow the Simpsons parody STILL has an effect.

Reminder, the latest episode of Robot-Kraken is available now: Legion, Expanse, and more! Please do rate and review us on iTunes…

And Blasters – Robot’s Root 31 Jan 2018

I’m really down with the new Ant-Man and Wasp trailer. Items that make thus:

  • Finally, a score that is definitive. One of the disappointing things about the MCU is the lack of striking scores. Thor: Ragnarok got close, with the Grandmaster theme, which I totally associate with the film; but it begins with the same lukewarm MCU banner theme. This one has that crunchy vibe, like the Wonder Woman theme. I dig it. I hope it makes it past the trailers.
  • Evangeline Lilly looks completely invested and believable in the role. I’m delighted with the execution
  • Lots of playing around with Pym Particles. That’s the lynchpin to this series. The more the better. I’m not sure where Pym’s rolling suitcase bits go when the building is full scale (and my architect brain reels at impossibillium used to maintain structural integrity in all these things) but that Hello Kitty moment is the BEST
  • G H O S T. While the comics version from Thunderbolts was a completely hollywood-ready design, this adaption looks pretty clean
  • Going on the run. Thats always an engaging narrative.
  • Multiverse action has big consequences

See the trailer here.

Meanwhile, more root from the future:

  • Apparently the Badrobot produced WWII feature from last year is actually another stealth Cloverfield project. Sounds very Hellboy.
  • WTF Mute looks even better than I anticipated. Plus, Paul Rudd as CACTUS BILL ffs. Check out the full trailer, and hold your breath for 23 days.
  • HG Wells, the father of… tabletop wargaming?
  • Welp, DC’s latest streamer sounds like hot garbage. I mean, if the premise bores me, we’re in trouble. Like Krypton. Like Lois and Clark before it. Like Gotham turned out to be. Superheroes without the superheroes done wrong.
  • While Chris Claremont’s work in my youth was both influential and nauseating, depending on where, when and what, I agree that at the time, the Dark Phoenix saga, along with Alpha Flight #12, cemented in my mind the value in ramifications and permanence in comics storytelling. Admittedly, a Phoenix by definition reincarnates, but her rebirth was the slippery slope into the devlauation of these sorts of events that had real meaning. Comics always ate themselves and rewrote their own stories, and that’s fine for the medium, but the Phoenix story tried to tell a pretty mature story of change and loss and impossible decisions, which I appreciated. Interesting timing, this documentary, coming out before the Dark Phoenix film. Also, nice to see the nod to Louise Simonson.
  • The Watchmen TV series for HBO has no official cast or imagery, but it does have a director, which is a thing.
  • I still don’t know how I feel about Jack Ryan. I want it to be good. John Krazinski went to the gym, and is a pretty good actor. But he still has a comedic face. I don’t know. I’m not saying it’s fair. He just looks KIND.
  • OK, at this point I’m just getting pissed off. I want this Dundee business to be REAL, not a tourism ad. Come ON. Plus, you know, Lil’ Donk.

OK, that’s all for now. There’s a storm coming. Typhoon style. And me without my speedo!

Im Arresting You Thats What Im Doing – Robots Root 20 September 2017

I’m somewhat alarmed to tell you that I feel strongly compelled to buy this bottle even though I fear soul crushing debt.

Welp, in other news, here’s some Robot Rootery:

  • How Wonder Woman should have ended? Right here. And a hankering for an Honest Trailer, perhaps? HERE.
  • This Sideshow speculative Nomadic Obi Wan is all sorts of amazing and I want this movie now. This right here. All of it.
  • You may have heard that Richard Donner’s original goal for Superman was to have the majority of Superman I and II as a single film. This isn’t that, quite, but here is a Blu-Ray release of the longform version of Superman I that was originally broadcast over two nights. I can’t wait. How interesting! It’s like an alternate reality version of the film.
  • A brief history of the famously awkward Star Trek ‘double punch’ maneuver.
  • I’m kind of enjoying this examination of Tragic Photoshop on Alicia Vikander’s spine. I mean, I enjoy examining her spine in general. But also, bad photoshop. Speaking of, here’s the whole trailer.
  • So I’m thinking about Avengers 3 and 4. Loose theory: Avengers 3 (Infinity War) will involve Thanos cleaning up, brutally killing everyone. Cap gets ahold of the time gem, travels back… then we have Captain Marvel movie, set in 90s. Perhaps time travel events in Avengers 3 lead to environment where Cap Marvel now exists. Reset MCU. Then forward to Avengers 4 where we have traveled through different timelines, and are now defeating Thanos with a new hybrid team of multidimensional Avengers? This would explain why Crossbones may be back (alternate universe or time travel) and would trade heavily on the Avengers Forever stuff from years ago, swapping out Thanos for Kang.
  • Trailer round-up; This collection of trailers includes the following: gratuitous overuse of the choppy percussion coinciding with cut scenes, mini-teaser trailers preceding the actual trailers, oversharing, and surprisingly, two uses of big gun 80’s metal that I hope make it into the respective projects and not just the trailers.
    • New Jumanji stuff, which I told myself I wouldn’t watch, but did, and still loved.
    • New full Punisher trailer. At this point his chestplate looks less bustier-like, which is good, but I still struggle with his douche haircut. Release date remains randomly obscured, because Netflix.
    • Donnie Yen’s HK 70s epic, Chasing the Dragon
    • Full Tomb Raider trailer (I really enjoy a female, modern take on Indiana Jones, but it’s a bit heavy on the daddy stuff)
  • MA.K is being adapted by the producer of IT. Giant robots, so I’m in.
  • This is awesome: Tweedie Waititi has commissioned and produced a Maori-language version of Moana and held free screenings, to encourage the dwindling native-tongue speaking Maori population to re-engage with their culture in NZ.
  • And speaking of the Waititis, Taika is apparently looking at taking on Akira. I mean, CAN YOU IMAGINE. So rad.
  • I don’t know why this took me by surprise, given Schwarzenegger and Cameron have been talking up another Terminator project, but now apparently Linda Hamilton is in on it. Surprising to me, I guess, given her relationship collapse with Cameron…
  • Watchmen has begun production for HBO… given how much room that story wants to breathe, and HBO’s track record for genre projects the last several years, I’m optimistic.

One more thing:

I don’t know of this is legit…. but it is definitely L E G I T if you feel me.

Also: Dig on Bosslogic’s speculative Joker via Jackie Earl Haley..

Finally, an update on the TRDL Art Jam:

Our man Tulio will be taking on the duties of posting the TRDL Art Jam subjects each month, to our FB and dA groups… starting in October. I needed to focus on the TRDL Sourcebook production, so this is a huge help.

A Cherry Blossom Urban Moment and Other Things – 29 June 2017

I’m really chuffed about my current iOS background. This too can be yours.

Meanwhile, I present: Robot’s Root!

  • Wow, so, I’m not sure the better takeaway on this one: inspect undercarriage for ticks on the regular, or have a full size water tank on hand for red ant attacks. Either way.
  • I think i see some cues from the Iron man Bleeding Edge armor in these Infinity War drone snaps. All the LEDS! Love it.
  • Lucas’ museum has been approved to go forward in LA, which is generally good news, because i’m in LA all the time, and I want to get up IN there.
  • Bloody, practical FX, Hellboy… these are all on my X-mas list…
  • I’m not going to Game of Toles night at the Giants stadium, but the GOT intro sequence is still one of my favorites, so this was a treat. Thanks, Lung!
  • I think it’s WAYYYY too early to get excited about the new The Batman… but I will say that all this noir Hitchcockian referencing works for me.
  • I really want to see Lord and Miller rejoin the Flash film. Think about it: DC desperately wants to ‘lighten up’ the DCU. Lord and Miller were fired for, among many issues, an overly-comical, improvisational tone to the footage shot and the script deviations taken (raging Kasdan into rage) … and finally, these solo films from DC struggle under the weight of their own imagery and nostalgia… Ezra Miller’s Flash thus far has been witty… how interesting would it be if Lord and Miller SUCCEEDED and made a good film for DC?
  • I can’t even with all this Sony business. Kraven and Mysterio solo films? Really? And Carnage is the big bad of a Venom film? SO MANY TENDRILS.
  • Watchmen as an ongoing on HBO was all anyone wanted in the first place, though I’m no hater of the film by any stretch.
  • You like Legos? And Fuchikomas? HERE
  • I want to like Inhumans. Despite everything. The trailer launched… and it’s devoid of tension. I don’t even. At least Lockjaw has a tuning fork, albeit a surface branded one… the way I like things in general, I guess. Glowy tattoos FTW. More breakdown here.
  • On the other hand, the Jumanji trailer launched and I LOVED IT. ‘you don’t go in the water with a backpack everyone knows that.’
  • I’m surprised by my own self, liking what I’m seeing from the Netflix adaptation of Death Note. It’s all about Willem Defoe + Death God as he’s always looked. Wow.
  • Valerian is getting better early buzz than I anticipated. If nothing else, not surprisingly, it needs to be seen on the big screen…
  • Hey cool, noirish trippy Alan Moore project that he actually wrote for live action so maybe 3% chance he won’t distance himself from it with vitriol. Looks great! On Shudder.
  • Spidey’s early buzz is REALLY good, which is also promising… meanwhile, Tom Holland is apparently an unintentional enthusiastic leaker who hasn’t been given the Infinity War script out of caution. He supposedly got the OK to tell folks it’s Peter parker (retconned) into IM 2… I like that nod. The connection of Stark to Parker was important in the comics, and I think it’s a big part of how the new phase of Marvel movies goes… speaking of, THIS is finally available…
  • So for those of you who’ve seen WW, you know that cool moment where she meets Chief, and speaks with him in Blackhawk? Apparently he introduces himself as Napi, a trickster god, and it was in the script. Also the first time she actually shakes someone’s hand. Interesting! Apparently in canon.
  • You may have read this (quickly debunked) interpretation of the story of Andy’s father in Toy Story… Im not convinced it’s NOT true, given the circumstances. I actually REALLY like it. It’s chilling.
  • Also, this happened: my new spirit animal

Thus and therefore, I leave you to your e-musings.

Whooop Whooop Whooop Trailer plus Other Things – 18 April 2017

Well, I’ve only watched the Last jedi teaser about 33,000 times so far. Finally spotted mysteriously-alive Phasma, and today, I see those new whatever-they-are Pound-Note-Wings are hurtling towards the rumored Even-Bigger-AT-ATs… anyway, awesome of course.

Robot’s Root for 18 April 2017:

  • My feed was all about a Man From UNCLE sequel until I looked into it and saw that Armie Hammer just #yeahdude’d it into being. Which means nothing. But still, hey, I’d prefer a world with a Man from UNCLE sequel to one without.
  • Check out how cool Leia looks in this…
  • I like covert action/ spy/ assassin type thrillers, so I choose to be optimistic, though the production pedigree is questionable. See for yourself.  Michael Keaton is being all Michael Keatoney.
  • Would you be down for an animated Watchmen with a hard R? I don’t see why this is happening, but according to this survey, SOMEONE must…
  • what do you think about Josh Brolin as Cable? The bullshit fan manips so far haven’t been helpful. But I almost feel like just Brolin walking around scowling is ENOUGH.
  • Nothing will turn your own cult fanbase against you than spurious trademark moves…especially with the cyberpunk genre.
  • Ottoman-style arts of excellent movies. MUST SEE.
