13 Reasons Meh – Robots Root 29 October 2018

Reading this, I wondered if it’s part of that atrocious event Marvel had in the books not too long ago, that rationalized the creation of Evil Hydra Cap… though, I’ll tell you what, I’d be down with any Avengers 4 storyline that led us to a Hydra Cap and ‘ha tricked you idiots!’ reveal of Chris Evans returning as a villain. Alternate theories include a Stark/Potts daughter that would be negated from existence in the undoing of Thanos’ snappery in A4 (a la Fringe, who will always have done it better), or even Kate Bishop/Hawkeye. Not super into this actress. Consult this fan manip. Ugh.

Meanwhile, from the deepest depths:

  • Last time I mentioned Big Kill, and how it looked like a video game. I mean… LOOK at it. It’s amazing.

  • Here are a few pics of that Black Costume Superman again from the WB Elseworlds thing. Other than the eternally weird cape brackets… it looks really good. Possibly the best a Superman costume has looked in forever. I really like it, even if Cavill has trained me to demand muscular bulk in my Supermen…
  • If there’s one thing I love, it’s OPTIONS, buddy.
  • The best part of this ‘private eye weighs in on hollywood private eyes’ video is the Arrested Development component.
  • I’m intrigued by this ScreenX business. Seems like it could really backfire.
  • DAMMIT TOLE That’s what i WANTED.
  • So, imagine if you didn’t know what your property used to be, opened up a wall, and hundreds of thousands of teeth poured out. Nightmare fuel.
  • The petition to put Sauron’s Eye on Salesforce Tower continues. Makes me laugh. It’s appropriate.
  • I saw this three times before I realized it was an Avengers: Infinity War reference. Amazing.
  • Avatar 23 to be released in 2134. Kidding. I mean not really tho.

That’s it, that’s all, that’s all there is

Wings and Things – Robots Root 23 October 2018

The more I watch the new Daredevil season (which has been SO GOOD) the more I think about the recent cancellations in the Marvel Netflix series, and how much I want a Daughters of the Dragon series next. Hopefully the above image isn’t too spoilery for those who are still watching Iron Fist, because no one is watching Iron Fist, and nothing matters. HA

This! News from the Quantum Whatever!

  • I’m into the new Netflix series Bodyguard. I love the lead, from the Game of Thrones days of course, and I find the subject matter compelling: the protecting of a politician whom you ideologically oppose, and then being sucked into the intelligence part of it. Hope its good! Coming to a Robot-Kraken pod near you soon enough…
  • This piece on disguise theory in the intelligence community was great. I thought a lot about this sort of thing when working on Finit-e… the ways in which dialog and mannerism can betray a spy.
  • Joining lil’ Predator, here comes lil’ Slimer. Unreal how well this works!
  • A study of high-angles used purposefully in cinematography.
  • This isn’t much of a spoiler, if you have ready any Iron Man comics over the years, but here’s a spoilery Pepper Potts pic from Avengers 4 that I like very much. ENDORSED!
  • While all I want to hear now is a Daughters of the Dragon (above) and a Heroes for Hire and a post-Netflix Jessica Jones and Defenders… rumor has it Nick Fury is getting a series…
  • This is just one of many photos to come out of the WB Elseworlds crossover featuring Green Arrow and Flash switching costumed identities. Everyone is worked up about John Wesley Shipp back in the furry Flash suit from the 90s, but I just cant get over how bad Stephen Amell looks in the Flash suit. It’s not just that it’s not a roided up muscle-built uniform like all the others… it’s design and plating is expressly awkward. He looks ridiculous, in a suit that appears designed to be so. Because that guy is RIPPED, otherwise.
  • Wonder Woman 2 is delayed until 2020… so many possible reasons.
  • Finally, Guillermo Del Toro finally gets to make his Pinocchio… at Netflix. Watch for those eye-palms!

Thats all for tonight. Brought to you by the 33% Nation of Iron Fist Katanas.

Blame it on SKRULLS! – Robots Root 25 July 2017

It’s gonna be raining SKRULLS IN PLAID soon enough, cousins! Onward… into Robot’s Root:

  • Lots of #SDCC material we haven’t talked about or did so piecemeal, so here:
    • Gifted trailer (fox) – not optimistic, though I do generally prefer Jamie Chung over no Jamie Chung. As much as I love references between films or between TV and film series that show connections in the story, it’s fraught with challenge and often doesn’t work (or goes in one direction only, awkwardly)… so I give them a little bit of credit for making Gifted it’s own continuity, and not sharing with Legion or the films. That said, it’s fraught with mainstream viewer confusion and seems like a matter of time before James Marsten or whomever will show up on one of these shows anyway… that’s a bad example I guess, being a recast victim.
    • New Defenders trailer, with slightly more cohesion. I’m 100% on board. Doubly so, now that they’ve announced a new showrunner for Iron Fist S-2. Granted it’s the guy who brought you the Elektra film, but still. Also, Misty Knight added, so there’s that.
    • Stranger Things S02 trailer completely owned my attention.
    • Talk about coming from behind, so to speak: Star Trek Discovery is looking sharp!
    • Westworld S02 trailer here, which I didn’t watch, because please please please blackout.
    • I saw Spidey with my man Lung the other night, and during the same tired Justice League trailer he turned to me, fueled by some tequila, to be fair, and announced the JL film was going to “kick ass”… I have been far less optimistic just from the monotony of the early trailer images of the dark mucky muck fighting environment and the blah generic dark mucky muck Parademons, and my personal grievance, the horribly written ‘You… me… the others…’ followed by WW asking again about ‘the others’… UGH UGH UUUUUUGH. That said, new trailer brings the hope back, doesn’t it? Plus, news of Flash now being a Flashpoint storyline is encouraging too. I love multiverse stuff. Speaking of, Steppenwolf in the new trailer says a few choice things: he mentions Lanterns… and he says THIS world will fall, like all the others. More multiverse business!

    • And the Alex Ross references are DOOOPE. Meanwhile, the buzz on the supernet is about how Henry Caville’s MI6 mustache is causing much digital post-editing of reshoot material on Whedon’s JL-fixery. Setting aside the fact that this sort of thing isn’t as uncommon as people seem to think, I was amused by a tweet by McQuarry, hard at work on MI6, that basically said that if they had to add a fake mustache to Cavill on MI6 it would need to be held on by staples. Funny, not just because it sidesteps that they could be adding it digitally just as easily (but shouldn’t as it’s their time and contract now, for Cavill, not JL) but because it’s a clever way of reminding people that the MI films are all action and will be fun and kinetic. Good move!
    • So Captain Marvel will be set in the 90s and feature the Skrulls. I’m really, REALLY, enthused about this. Different time period, use of my favorite Marvel alien race, just ripe for drama and betrayal, etc… all the interesting things we get design-wise by going early 90s… I mean, I’m thrilled. Now, how to shunt Carol to the modern era afterward? We aren’t going to be burying Brie Larson’s radiance in makeup… already did that, and understandably so, with Hayley Atwell as Peggy Carter.  As for how Marvel is playing in the FF toolbox, remember, all sorts of things have been cooking behind the scenes between Disney Marvel and Sony Marvel and Fox Marvel… here’s concept art, which is quite reassuring, costume-wise.
    • Probably the most exciting material that has been officially released from the show (ie. not Infinity War mumble grumble) is the new Ragnarok trailer, which causes aneurysms of yeee. The idea that a lot of this film was improvised (and not in an IM1 way) despite Disney scrutiny makes me very happy. That’s what you hire Waititi for. I’m looking at YOU, Star Wars Disney.
  • I do like the cinematic Spidey suit a LOT. I’m much less enthused about what people are calling the Iron Spidey but is really just Limited Edition Gold Foil Variant Spidey from Infinity Wars. I wish we were getting the ‘Superior Spider-Man’ concept suit instead.
  • Here’s some generally underwhelming Ant-Man and Wasp poster art. I’m surprised. Meanwhile, Michelle Pfeiffer joins as Janet Van Dyne? Interesting pairing with Michael Douglas. Bring on the de-aging FX!
  • I’m really interested in Ed Piskor’s experimental X-Men project. First, his Hip-Hop Family Tree series was and is amazing. But beyond that, I guess I have a personal interest in the ‘grand summary’ concept of distilling a metric ton of continuity into a single story. I’ve loved mini-series or other projects that poke into different periods in ‘original continuity’ Marvel* and on a highly specific, and self-promoting note, it’s essentially what I’m doing with the TRDL Universe: there’s a huge amount of content in the timeline for this world, described in the sourcebooks… I could never illustrate it all… but I CAN illustrate snapshots in the timeline, weaving a common thread between them, which is what we have cooking. Anyway, I’m stoked on the project.

*I say ‘original continuity’ because all the callbacks seem to be written by writers like me who are my age and have been reading since I have, and are going back to the pre-retcon era of Marvel, ie. prior to the relaunches and rewrites and universe redefinitioning that Marvel succumbed to, the way DC had since the 80s… to me it’s everything from the 60s to the very early 90s, and then more or less into the early 2000s, after which Marvel continuity ate itself, orobouros style. Admittedly, we’ve played fast and loose with continuity from the golden age… but I mean, I don’t even know how time WORKS at Marvel anymore. Even beyond the multiversing and universe rewriting and dimensional folding and all this, and even beyond largely ignoring the lack of aging of many characters and the fix of truncating time so that events in the 60s happened ‘a few years ago’ in current continuity, etc I bristle when we see a retelling of early stories, set in continuity, where people are using cell phones and modern affectations… I get that it’s a paradox, that we can’t let the X-Men be birthed in the 60s while at the same time not have the original X-Men be in their late 60s/early 70s… but I guess for me, that’s what I WANT to see. Aged heroes, young next gen people picking up the costumes, etc. One of the most interesting things in Marvel continuity has been when Steve Rogers would lose the serum and be suddenly a senior (with abs)… and recently, with Old Man Logan shunted into main continuity, same deal. But comics are written, traditionally for tweens and teens in a three year looping window of attention span, and I get that. Anyway.

Six Seven Go To Hell or Go To Heaven – 21 Mar 2017

Tomenosuke PRO Blaster
Let me tole you: if I didn’t have kids in the home, and DID have $899 laying around…
link!

Meanwhile:

– As much as I crave new Hans Zimmer soundtracks, this interview, reposted across various sites, warmed my heart a bit, because I share a devotion to the Nolan Batman films as well. It’s a very intimate and purposeful connection, the soundtrack developed for that trilogy and the material itself. Nolan and Zimmer work well together, thematically (witness Inception and Interstellar for examples outside of the superhero genre) and when Zimmer did the Man of Steel soundtrack, while it was excellent and distinct, it was lending some of that former world’s pedigree to the new films in a way I found disconnected. link!

– Sony wants to proceed with fast-tracking Venom, without a script or director… in the post-Marvel-deal era, what do YOU want from a Venom film? I can’t decide. I really don’t like the character outside of Spidey using the suit and then slowly going batty from the symbiote’s influence. Once it jumped to other hosts and became 90seriffic, I was out. I do like the black ops version from recent years in the comics, but I don’t see how it would translate. link!

– Similarly, WB / DC seem intent on keeping the Flash moving forward (heh) despite multiple issues with the pre-production. That’s not a good sign. link!

– RIP Bernie Wrightson. That escalated fast.
Not my artistic influence, and I didn’t read a lot of his stuff, but I always admired it from a technical level and enjoyed reading about his convention persona. link!

– We’re doomed. More. link! Mega-rich oligarches in powered armor!

Image
– random Kraken-related jewelry for the day. AMAZING.

-I’m trying not to read anything about GOG2 these days… but I can’t get enough on Yondu’s cyber mohawk. link!

Image
– Expanse has been greenlit for Season 3, so I can now relax.
link!

– Alicia Vikander may be joining a new Ben Wheatley project involving kicking nocturnal underground beastie ass. His current project looks insane and awesome, so let’s be optimistic.
link!

Image
– Becky Cloonan’s poster for Ghost in the Shell is EVERYTHING. link!

– Reddit is questionable for a lot of things. But the AMA (Ask Me Anything) series is not one of them. Here’s Gareth Edwards… link!

Image
Your random Mike Mignola block-rockin art used as a bossbot’s iphone screen for today.

– I’m generally not a fan of cosplayers photographed and then given a bunch of post FX. I like the craft of the costuming itself, and that’s as far as I go. However, this is really well done. link!

– Apparently Hela knows capoeira in the new Thor film. I appreciate it’s a gladiator road trip movie, but that’s quite a diversion from the comics. Then again, probably a welcome one. Stand around and glower megagod types are boring on film. link!

– Good news for this guy, having just finished Peaky Blinders S03… S04 is due to begin production, and Tom Hardy will return. link!

– So Fox’s X-Men show for broadcast TV? The one with a family on the run with a mutant child, which seems to have little to know recognizable X-anything in it except for Sentinels? Is it going to be called Mutants on the Run? MutantsSuxxxx? Mutant? Nope. GIFTED. Srsly. I was gifted. I had to do more homework. That is all. link!

Image
Here’s your random Black Adam speculative rendering for today, by Chris Diem. Love it. Great proof of concept…

– Henry Cavill is on board for MI: 6. That’s interesting! I hope he’s a villain. Not a team member who betrays them, but a proper villain. link!

– How strange the wheel is… Matt Vaughn gave the X-Men franchise a brief moment of hope, before getting forced out by Bryan Singer. Now, after doing his own thing (Kick Ass, Kingsmen) he’s back in the big studio system’s favor for supehero tentpoles, being supposedly courted for the next Superman film. If true, that’s something to be modestly optimistic about, similar to what happened with batman. link!

Image
Here’s your random Bill S. pic of the day: Dr Doom!

OK, that’s all for now. Fear not and be just!

Deeply Dapper at Saltcon Plus Other Things 3 March 2017

Image
Robot-Kraken fans take note: Deeply Dapper (Kris McClanahan) is tabling at Saltcon in Salt Lake City this weekend. Crack your coffers open and go pay him a visit!
http://saltcon.com/saltcon-2017/

Plus:

Trailer Updatery Commencing:

Image
I like everything I’m seeing from the latest Pirates film… even the new de-aged Jack Sparrow.
Optimisms! From whence there were none. I mean, I loved the first trailer, but based on the last few installments… link!

Image
and then, on the other side of the optimism spectrum, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, which we never had any doubts about over here at Robot-Kraken (cue our March broadcast) and this new trailer brings plenty of new yeeee. link!
Even the trailer TEASER was awesome: link!]link!

Image
And then, the film most people wrote off based on Prometheus, but which is looking block-rockin*: Alien: Covenant, has a new trailer: link! Oddly enough, though, the otherwise quite aesthetically pleasing Katherine Waterston has been successfully blanched of interest, and I’m a little bit concerned about the ‘couples’ thing. I get it, Adam and Eve. Let it go, Ridley Scott.
The standout moment for me was the Xenomorph headbutting the cockpit glass.

Image
Finally, the new Kong trailer looks super fun. It’s one of those trailers that would almost seem more stylish than the film itself, except for how much the early reviews are saying this is a kick ass film. Thoughts:
/// The sound fx are amazing. Timed music and beats to elements of imagery.
/// John C Reilly continues to own my attention, which is saying something, since Brie Larson is like RIGHT THERE.
/// the use of ‘Gotta get outta this place’ and then recontextualized twice into different songs
/// that shell drop, so metaphorical and stuff
/// that nixon bobble
/// plus I spy a kraken
I still can’t get behind those dumb as Skull buggas. Why would THAT form evolve in nature? But anyway.
link!

Meanwhile…

– Aquaman Always Uses the Butterfly Stroke: Snyder released some weird, blurry, underwater test footage of Aquaman. Look, that’s actually what I WANT it to be. I’m tired of underwater supershenanigans just looking like Simi Valley but with air bubbles. Or in this case, no air bubbles.
link!

– I’m the Grayist There Is at What I Do. Make That Greyist: I haven’t even seen Logan yet (Sunday) but I’m already chomping at the bit for the black and white iteration, if this comes to pass.
link!

– The Correct Amount of Cyberleather Olivia Wildes is N+1: Reading about the near-dead, moastly dead, pretty much definitely dead Tron 3 makes me have sads.
link!

Image
– I’ll Show YOU a Heat Sink Like You’ve Never SEEN Before: An artist I follow on IG, from WETA (PEARCE) is the hand behind their kickstarter board game. I love this thing. I’d buy in in a hot minute if I wasn’t trying to be reasonable after too many convention related costs. Read about it here:
link!
And here’s the Kickstarter plus more detail. SO GOOD. This guy is my current favorite mecha artist, BTW. And given my obsession with Shirow, that’s saying something. There’s rumblings about the cost, the actual playability of Cryptozooic’s other offerings, and the fact that a WETA-affiliated project doesn’t need crowdfunding. But it looks so fun.
https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/we … vy-hitters

And a sample of his stuff:
Image

– In Brightest Day, In Blackest Night, Marketing is Marketing: Everyone’s teasing Lantern being introduced in the Justice league film in some way. Which Lantern? Who knows? Do they immediately die? Probably. Is Henry Cavill being cheeky on IG? YES. Is Armie Hammer looking involved? Very much. But lets take a step back and Marvel, if you will, that the state of WB is such that they can make teasing the involvement of GREEN LANTERN IN A JUSTICE LEAGUE MOVIE an attempt at viral marketing for pre-release buzz. I mean, seriously. Why WOULDNT he be, and also, what about the three weeks of SEVEN SEVEN UNITE THE SEVEN they committed to (with 6 characters) until they dropped it. link!

– Flinty Actor Needed; Arm Optional: This round robin on Cable casting is hilarious. I like Pierce Brosnan, I can see Russel Crowe… but I especially like the rumor today that David Harbour from Stanger Things screen tested for it. If that’s even remotely true, my money’s on that one. I can see that working in the Deadpool tone much more easily. link! for a photomanip of Crowe, and link! for a cut and paste of Harbour. Just because.

– Or Maybe Change the Wifi Password: This is an amusing story, at least from a parental perspective. Seems severe. But hey, GET A JOB.link!

– Its My Party and I’ll Bat-Tusi if I Want to: Apparently, and again, much of this is rational-sounding speculation, really, like Matt Reeves really put WB over a barrel and got full creative control of Batman. Good on him, if so. link!

– Speaking of Leaping Robots: While we’re at it, let’s improve their freaky spider walking. For more urgent muderdeathkills.link!

– Nolan is Being Nolan: I love that he found a way to make the telling of a war movie in present tense become fractured and complicated. It really makes sense, though, what he’s talking about. I found it fascinating. Merging events that occur either as a week, day or a few hours, depending on POV, but all at once… link!

– Red Skull is Back Oh Wait: Rumor mumblings indicate the Black Mask may be in Gotham City Sirens. I like him more, visually, then the Red Skull, frankly, and I think he could look pretty cool tricked out and bedazzled or whatever in the Ayers-SS-Aesthetic. link!

Also, some casting updates, because happening:

Inhumans Casting Additions: Serinda Swan as Medusa (who I assume will always be preferred in her Zatanna fishnets over this no matter how good the costume and FX are) …
link!

X-Men Casting Addition: Steve Moyer of True Blood has jumped on board, as well as a few others. The girl that was weirdly annoying on Gotham for awhile, etc link!

Thus, I leave you for today. Go forth and apply your nerd standard trade!

Wes Anderson Makes Everything Better – 21 Dec 2016

Image

Today is the dawn of a NEW ERA. Hope returns to the world. Behold: Wes Anderson rambles his way through announcing his next project. YAY! link!

Meanwhile:

– Photos of Blade Runner 2 are continuing to seep into the interwebs, further showing Ryan Gosling suited up and fully immersed in the world and Harrison Ford’s Decker (retired) apparently not requiring a costume at all at this point. At least he took the earring out. link! … I do appreciate the effort they are putting into reminding us that Roger Deacon is on the project, and largely, green screens are not. link!

– Matthew McCoughnehhysysyee notes again that he’d be down to reprise his role as Rust Cole, in True Detective, because OF COURSE HE WOULD. It was solid gold. link!

– Lung and I have been lamenting the further superheroification of Batman’s costume in this pic. It’s not all bad: he has two suits in Justice League: one being the same deal as BVS but with more black, and one being the ‘TACTICAL SUIT” which is code for MORE ARMOR BITS AND RANDOM SEAMS. link!

– Another pic of Katherine Waterston on the set of Alien:Covenant is out, and she looks suitable blanched and stark, as she should for this project (it’s like some sort of before/after companion to how she looked in Inherent Vice. While alive. Anyway, also, James Franco is in it? What? link!

Image
-This is a feed you can find if you look for it. NOT A WOLF. Kills me.

– Netflix is tripping me out how they are able to have projects in production without people even knowing about them. For example, here’s another one: Travelers. What??? Anyway, i’m on board, i just can’t believe I didn’t know they had time cops or whatever cooking and we didn’t even know. link!

Image
– Lastly, just in time for the holidays: recreating the more dangerous scenes from Home Alone. We just watched this with the kids. Zoe is the target age and was cackling and rolling around. Matteo was too young and just stared at it and said things like ‘is that ALLOWED?’ (answer: no)… link!

Home Again Home Again Jiggity Jig – 20 Dec 2016

Image

Welp, while I would argue that visuals would be the LEAST of the risk factors in bringing a Blade Runner sequel to life, I’m 100% on board and plan to love it. link!

Meanwhile, in space:

– The lead (1st officer) in ST: Discovery has been cast. A favorite of fans of Walking Dead: Sonequa Martin Green…
link!

:::

– Pretty good example of nerd press going apeshit as they’ve been manipulated into doing: Megan Fox buys some Poison Ivy/Harley books and expresses interest in the role, and all of a sudden it’s a thing. I could generate a pretty solid list of projects Megan Fox might have an interest it. Not that I have any particular issue with her or her in that role. Though I prefer when she’s not playing the ‘hottest girl in the room’ character type. She HAS played other variations. Such as ‘hottest girl in the room who is actually somewhat nerdy’. hahaha. link!

:::

– I still have no idea if Aquaman will be good or not. But he DOES look good. That’s at least something, right? link!

– Build your own mecha gloves. And do me a favor, build me some too. link!

– Ouch. Smearing Tilda Swindon can backfire. link!

– The word on the street is that Han Solo starts filming in Spring. Rogue One pulled off retconning in the best possible way, not hashing into the story that pre-existed, but supplementing it. Much more difficult challenge ahead for this film. link!

– I have very little confidence in this film. But the reason i bring it up is that it makes me think that the costume designers must rejoice when modern John Cusack is cast, because they can take the time allocated to him and spend it on Angry Birds or whatever. Because same. Every time. And he dresses this way in realLife by the way. I saw him at Rose City Comic Con, same deal. link!

– Jessica Camacho has been cast as Gypsy on Arrow. Now look, I haven’t seen her work, and I haven’t come across Gypsy as a character since flipping through the DC Who’s Who books in the 80s… this character needs an update badly (even Marvel has bypassed a lot of that cultural trope, at least on film, with Scarlet Witch) but it’s again good to see actors of different ethnicities in these roles. link!

– The teaser was already great, and of course I was presold, but this full trailer for John Wick 2 is GREAT. link!

– Plus, misc. items thus:

Image
Corey Smith’s DD Redesign looks AWESOME, but I’ve always felt it is key that DD’s look not broadcast he is blind. There are plenty of characters where this is a thing, and I love it, but his secret identity and a good chunk of his character concept is based on this being hidden.

Image
Best VENN Diagram ever

Image
I noted this in our Robot-Kraken Instagram (Red Tentacle) but this was one of my favorite parts from the recent Darth Vader comics. He THREW the lightsaber and broke a Y-Wing, like it’s no thing.

Anyway, the force is with you and you are one with the force, if you’re lucky…

Luc Besson has Such Wonderful Toys – 10 November 2016

Image

So, the full Valerian trailer looks as much like a remake of the SW Prequels as it does Luc Besson’s Heavy Metal fueled adolescent fantasy stew meat, like an upgraded fifth element. Nothing even critical in that statement, really.
via

Meanwhile, this:

Image
ITEM: First look at Kong from Skull Island… he looks like an ape. A damn, dirty ape. With red underfur detailing, much like that new Japanese Gojira with the weird dildo tail.
via

:::

ITEM: It’s apparently DYSTOPIAN CYBERPUNK FUTURE THURSDAY. Right on the heels of Idiocracy: the Documentary this week, we have this series of straight-up cyberpunk articles:

Image
1. AI Lip Reading meets 2001 Levels.
via

Image
2. Paralyzed Limbs Triggered into Action via Cyberware
via

Image
3. Secret Nazi Base Discovered in Remote Arctic Island (bonus points: few days later, mysterious electronic ping coming from the depths near Nova Scotia, AND a lost nuke discovered while hunting sea cucumbers)
via

:::

Image
ITEM: Tesla coil powered gatling gun (for 35mm film canisters) because reasons. Think of it as proof of concept for something super violent and awesome.
via

:::

Image
ITEM: I was hoping for a cool, darker Black Hole, actually. That seems like a stupid sentence construction, now that I look at it. Anyway, I’m still nostalgic about the toys of my youth, especially crushed whatsisface.
via

:::

Image
ITEM: Ciaran ‘Mance Rayder’ Hinds has been cast as Steppenwolf… or his voice and mo-cap. It’s sort of like Josh Brolin as Thanos… it helps just imagining who it’s CGI’d all over.
via

:::

Image
ITEM: Lung sent this to me the day I was flying down to LA, and I got over-excited thinking it was the full trailer. It’s just another 3 second clip. But it’s straight up old school GiTS and one of her best moments ever from the series, so I liked it very much.
via

:::

Image
ITEM: In other news, every interesting character from the Marvel Netflix universe is in Defenders. EVERY ONE. Just like last week. But more.
via

Rad Metal Robots are Rad – 21 October 2016

Image
I keep forgetting to post my micro-review of the Disney Elite Edition K-2SO… so here we go: It’s 100% minimum awesome. I’m pleased I went with this one over the Black Series version. True die-cast (all except the hands) make this a weighty, satisfying hold. I don’t think i will be able to tolerate any droid figure ever again that isn’t metal. Love it. Guards the TRDL Groffice Studio.
Image

In other, far less compelling news, all of this:

Image
ITEM: You KNOW I love building rudimentary LEGO mechs. I’m always stockpiling specialty bricks I need for joints and what not. I’m always delighted to see new examples on the interwebs. This Overwatch-inspired model is cool because of the cockpit especially.
via

:::

Image
ITEM: When I fantasize about buying another moto, it’s generally a cafe racer… but I have to say, Triumph’s new bobber style bike (called, oddly enough, the Bobber) looks SWEET.
via

:::

Image
ITEM: Aquaman will be a ‘swashbuckling’ adventure film, a la Raiders, Romancing the Stone, etc. I can get behind that. We need a good solid LINEAR ADVENTURE MOVIE.
via

Also, still love this:
Image

:::

Image
ITEM: Easily build your own Batman anti-Superman helmet cowl! But actually whatever’s the opposite of easy. I’m struck, watching this, by how much the techniques employed are the same I used when painting lead miniatures. Some scratch-build work, base paint, darkwash, dry brush. I mean, it stands to reason, since I was doing all that while training for practical FX work, and the same techniques applied then as they do now. I was just sort of reminded of the distant past. Also, I love that he’s using the same LED technique I used on one of my bikes, though he ganged them together awesomely. He could have solved the discomfort by recessing them in the helmet foam. Anyway, great build video. Thanks Lung.
via

:::

Image
ITEM: All of Kate McKinnon’s outtakes from Ghostbusters in one video. The best part is: she isn’t even TRYING. This is just how she thinks.

ITEM: Lung sent this to me at some inappropriate hour. SCURRED.

Image
ITEM: This is a good fit: Miguel Sapochnick directing a new Sinbad film… given how amazing his Battle of the Bastards was on GoT…
via

:::

Image
ITEM: I’ve been meaning to draw the Iron Giant ever since we watched the film with the kids for the first time last month (well, their first time)… then again, I’ve been meaning to draw, period. This maquette is pretty great.

Image
ITEM: I know I opined about this prior, but I’m still loving this poster art for Lost World or Lost World II or Lost World 23… whatever it is…

:::

Image
ITEM: BTS images from SS keep showing scenes or elements I want to see more of, perhaps in the Extended We Swore We Wouldn’t Edition. Like this.

:::

Image
ITEM: The concept art for Baron Zemo in costumed form, unused in Civil War, is actually pretty feasible. His mask could be a Sakovian special forces standard of some sort, I don’t know, purple for whatever reason. Anyway…

And with that, lil’ armored Bats and I wish you a fond weekend full of verve and vigor!

Screaming into the Void – 29 Sept 2016

Image
Midnight last night… can’t wait! Really well reviewed so far…
via

In other news…

Image
ITEM: This was admittedly a bit sensational. I mean, it’s a kingdom of women. THAT SAID, headline grabbing or no, if I were a young bisexual person I’d be pretty thrilled to see some more representation, and in such an amazing, inspirational character, particularly for women.

:::

Image
ITEM: WHOA Textless movie posters. SO MANY desktops…
via

:::

Image
ITEM: This video is popular with my kids. It will become increasingly obvious as to WHY.
via

:::

Image
We didn’t see our local Drafthouse participate in this, i don’t think. But the Kybercasm sounds good. I’ll be sure to try, uh, ALL OF THEM, this December though.
via

:::

Image
ITEM: Hot Toys once again makes a better guy THAN the guy. That stubble.
via

:::

Image
ITEM: I didn’t catch this before, but Duncan Jones’ MUTE will be released on Netflix the same day it hits theaters. I guess I knew Netflix funded it, but wow.
via

:::

Image
ITEM: Oddly enough, reading the articles lately that the team behind No Man’s Sky are being investigated on claims of false advertising, and even after reading all the reviews, and EVEN after frequently noting I have no time for games right now… I still went out and bought it. I just want space creatures.

:::

Image
ITEM: At this point, just make a 1:1 scale version, OK? I’m ready.
via

:::

Image
ITEM: This treasure trove of concept work Mike Mignola did for a Kirby-based New Gods film is fascinating.
via

:::

Image
ITEM: Once again, I haven’t seen these DC/WB shows, but it’s like sometimes I can imagine my young self looking at this and just seeing the characters from the page leaping onto the screen. For every heavily modified, leathery adaptation of a costume, there’s a Star here that just looks on model.

And you know, watching this clip, it seems like they have a lot of personality and fun in the shows. I don’t know, I can’t get into them when i try to watch them, but I kind of like that they exist. Benoist as Supergirl and whatsisface as Flash are standouts in that regard.

That’s all for tonight… on heavy production cycle making prints for next week’s APE convention appearance. Long night ahead!

I leave you with my latest t-shirt acquisition…
